There is a full-page inscription on the front end page to Julian Phillips, Australian legal academic from the author, dated 1977, and signed "Bill Gould Stamford California". There is no indication that this William B Gould is any relation to a slave of the same name who escaped to a Union gunboat and served in the Union Navy during the American Civil War.
