An American Experience
Ashbolt, Allan,
Australasian Book Society, Sydney, 1966.
Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. First Edition. 500 g.; 304 pp., Victor Gollancz style dustwrapper (which is not surprising given that it was jointly published by Victor Gollancz And the Australasian Book Society). 2 X 1.0 "tears of top edge of the rear panel of the dustwrapper along each crease. The spine and top edge of the dustwrapper have browned from the original vivid yellow. The edges of the book and the endpapers have also browned. The author reveals himself as a really outstanding journalist, and extremely shrewd and well-informed political and social analyst and a true radical -- in his own use of the word, which he makes clear in his particularly notable chapter on the Supreme Court. The conflict over the meaning of liberty, as it is reflected in the clash of opinion in the Supreme Court is, he believes, "far more fundamental to the political development of the United States than any policy clashes between the two main parties". This is one of his main conclusions: the other is that what's wrong with America stems basically from its pervading business philosophy that "come murder, come mayhem, a respectable firm still has to sell its products". The Pulse of Praise; form as a second self in the poetry of George Herbert
Guernsey, Julia Carolyn,
ISBN: 0874136792
University of Delaware Press, Newark, 1999.
Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. First Edition. 600 g; 270 pages, indexed, bibliography, chapter notes. Illustrated dustjacket. The dust jacket is rubbed at the head and tail of the spine cover section, otherwise in very good order. Giulio Guernsey here addresses are Herbert's poetics from a psychohistorical perspective, demonstrating what close attention to prosody can contribute to critical discussions about self representation, self-Other relation, and self-transformation in the Temple. Although these issues lie at the heart of many historical and religious studies of The Temple, surprisingly few critics have approached subjectivity and intersubjectivity in Herbert from a cycle analytical perspective, and even fewer have emphasised what prosody contributes to Herbert's representations of self and the self-Other relationship. -- front wrapper blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Red Letter Days
Beasley, Jack -- Editor,
Australasian Book Society, Sydney, 1979.
Maroon Board with Gilt. Good/Good. First Edition. 400 g; X, 198 pages, original dust jacket. Indexed. Chapter notes. Slight fading of the colour on the spine otherwise scratch that and rubbing of the tips of the fold overs. Otherwise in very good condition. This book is a candid personal and intensely human portrait of contemporary Australian writers but it is also given permanent value by being an eyewitness account of its times. Alan Marshall, Frank Hardy and Judah Waten, all significant and controversial, are written off by one who has been intimately associated with them. Red letter days is a revelation as to the nature of these three and their work. There are crisp observations and pen pictures of Mary Gilmore, Leslie Haylen, Gavin Casey and many others. For the first time the formation, activities and functioning of the Australasian Book Society are examined. Zhdanovism and socialist realism are discussed in another controversial chapter on the Communist Party and its personalities. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Walter De La Mare -- a Critical Study

"This book is a critical study, technical and textual, and also an interpretation. But interpretation is meant a kind of collaboration between the mind of the reader -- in this case the critic, a creative writer himself -- and that of his author. The plan of the book is to take the works in the order of their writing, and to trace the growth of this spiritual content as well as their form. Certain of them which seem peculiarly significant either in their manner or their matter have been examined in detail, and everywhere the aim has been to reveal what is latent in them as well as what is more directly expressed." -- front fold over blurb. Six studies in Quarrelling
Brome, Vincent,
Cresset Press, London, 1958.
Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Fair. First Edition. 400 g; X, 198 pages, includes bibliography. The book's chapters are arranged thus: -- Shaw versus Wells -- Shaw and Wells versus Henry Arthur Jones -- Henry James versus H.G. Wells -- Dr. Coulton versus Hilaire Belloc -- G.K. Chesterton versus Bernard Shaw -- Hilaire Belloc versus H.G. Wells . In retrospect it is good reading and great fun, as the author intended to be; but deeper echoes still resound from those battles of not so long ago reminding us pertinently how passionately the angry young man of that generation were concerned about the questions of the day and how supremely articular they were in discussion. Foxing to the top and front edges of the text block, darkening of the back strip section of the dust jacket, which also has several short tears and chipping. . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. "This is an examination of the "myth of femininity" as revealed by a comparative study of the works of Henry James, Robert Musil and Marcel Proust. Concentrating on the creative, "transformative" effect for the various heroines under consideration have on their male counterparts, the author assesses the importance that these three writers attached to the male/female relationships in their writings. Inevitably the emphasis in each case differs considerably." -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. We will happily provide a picture of this book, on request.
