The John McPhee Reader
McPhee, John,
ISBN: 0374517193
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 1985.
Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Reprint. The John McPhee Reader, first published in 1976, is comprised of selections from the author's first twelve books. In 1965, John McPhee published his first book, A Sense of Where You Are; a decade later, he had published eleven others. His fertility, his precision and grace as a stylist, his wit and uncanny brilliance in choosing subject matter, his crack storytelling skills have made him into one of our best writers: a journalist whom L.E. Sissman ranked with Liebling and Mencken, who Geoffrey Wolff said "is bringing his work to levels that have no measurable limit," who has been called "a master craftsman" so many times that it is pointless to number them. Reading creases on the spine, age toning of the rear panel, and pencil note & signature on the inside of the rear cover. Otherwise no damage to describe. The book is edited, with an introduction by William L Howarth. Size: Mid Sized Paperback ( 7" - 9" tall ). XXIV, 390 pages.. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. The dust jacket has an abrasion mark on the right-hand side of the front panel where the price sticker or similar had been removed and on the rear panel and abrasion over the bar-coded where a price sticker had been removed and rubbing at the top left of the photograph. Dateline Freedom -- Revelations of an Unwilling Exile
Vitaliev, Vitali,
ISBN: 0091746779
Hutchinson, London, 1991.
Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. 500 g; XIV, 210 pages, indexed, and with a central eight-page photographic section. The edges of the pages have browned, there is a small (very small moisture mark to the external edge of pages 208 -- 210). No damage to describe. Described by the Sunday Telegraph as "a warrior of the pen", leading Soviet satirist and investigator journalist Vitali Vitaliev put his life at risk by exposing miscarriages of justice that no other reporter was brave enough touched. But by 1991 freedom of the press, one of the hallmarks of perestroika, no longer exists, the size of the KGB has grown ominously, new repressive laws to "protect the honour and dignity of the President" have been passed. -- Front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
