Order in the Court: Lighter Side of the Law from the Verbatim Columns of Bar News
no author
ISBN: 0850913373
Lothian Pub Australia 1988 1st Edition
12mo Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover 110 pages including drawings. As our courts are a stage for the whole range of human emotions, it is inevitable that the solemnity of proceedings can be suddenly reduced to helpless farce by a flash of humour. The Verbatim Pages of Bar News have been recording the best of court room humour down the years, and provide this magnificent collection, accompanied by some of the famous "Bar News Cartoons". There are many pieces of genuine and intentional wit, but there are also some prime examples of doublespeak, obfuscation, foolishness and double entendre. The stories may be rich and sonorously long, or short and pithy, such as: S.M.: Time to pay! What do you guys think we’re running around here - a hire purchase institution? Defendant: Can I call a character Witness? County J .P.: No, this is a charge against you, not against your character. Meldrum: The accused has successfully attempted suicide on two previous occasions, has he not? Mclnerney J .: Mr Meldrum, you have just propelled yourself into legal immortality.  Very Good

An ordinary man
McLeod-Lindsay, Alexander
ISBN: 0868060771
Hale & Iremonger Australia 1984 1st Edition
12mo Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover xii + 279 indexed pages including b/w illustrations. In 1964 in the Sydney suburb of Sylvania, a young woman and her four-year-old son were brutally bashed in their own home. Two weeks later the husband and father was formally charged with attempted murder of his wife. In March 1965, despite his wife’s continued assertion of his innocence, he was convicted and sentenced to eighteen years imprisonment. The man was Alexander McLeod-Lindsay. His case has remained one of the most controversial and publicised in Australian criminal history. Lack of motive, con?icting circumstantial evidence and dubious forensic evidence have caused many to question the verdict, among them Lady Herron, wife of the then Chief Justice of NSW, the late Professor Peter Brett, Professor of Jurisprudence at Melbourne University, and the criminologist, Professor Gordon Hawkins of Sydney University’s Law School. In 1973 McLeod-Lindsay was paroled. Still anxious to clear his name, he studied new evidence disclosed at the Inquiry into his case and began to question the Report of Mr Justice Lee. This book is the result. The telling is simple and direct. He has made no attempt to avoid contentious issues or to gloss over any points to his disadvantage, nor has he indulged in any bitter tirades or in indulgent self-pity. His story is a dramatic and compelling narrative which, as Professor Hawkins writes in his Foreword, ‘raises serious questions and makes specific criticisms relating to the operation of our criminal procedures and criminal justice system’.  Very Good

Thai Law: Buddhist Law - Essays on the Legal History of Thailand, Laos and Burma
Huxley, Andrew
ISBN: 9748299864
Orchid Press Thailand 1996 1st Edition
12mo Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover 211 pages. Between 1880 and 1930 Thai law was modernised. Using the French civil code as their model, the kings of Siam recast traditional Thai law into western form. This book describes Thai law as it was before 1880. For at least five hundred years - perhaps nearer a thousand years - the Thai have used written law books. During the last twenty years, Thai scholars have systematically searched for these law books through the book chests of monasteries throughout the country. As a result, there are now ten times as many legal manuscripts available for study compared to the number accessible twenty years ago. In this book six experts on history and law describe the new discoveries and assess how far our view of traditional Thai law has to change. The essays have a regional focus, dealing with the Northern Thai traditions of Lanna, the provincial cities of central Thailand, the Southern Kingdom based on Nakhon Si Thammarat, the law texts of Laos, the new discoveries in Burma and finally with Bangkok and its famous Three Seals Code. A number of questions arise; some are answered, others will provoke a lively debate in the future. How should we describe the Thai legal tradition? Did the Thais bring it with them into Southeast Asia? Or is it part of the Buddhist intellectual traditions that reached Thailand from across the Bay of Bengal? Is it enough to call traditional Thai law 'pre-modern', or should the different regions be graded into degrees of pre-modernity? Ex-library markings.  Good
