ROUGH PASSAGE And the Adventure of the Faeroe Islands by M. Helen Graham
Graham, Commander R. D.
ISBN: 0246123117
Granada Publishing London 1985 Reprint
Paperback With 5 maps, a very good copy. In 1934, Commander Graham set off single-handed from Falmouth in Emanuel, a tiny seven-ton cutter, on a voyage to Labrador. Once there, he spent several weeks cruising among the remote settlements of Newfoundland and Labrador. On the passage home via Bermuda, heavy gales tested man and boat nearly to the limit. The boom was smashed and the trysail ripped to shreds. The disabled boat managed to make it to Bermuda, where Commander Graham spent the winter. He then sailed home in the spring by way of the Azores. This new edition contains an account of one of Emanuel's earlier voyages to the little known Faeroe Islands written by Commander Graham's daughter who sailed with him. ; 215 x 135mm; 256 pages Near Fine

SLAUGHTER AT SEA The Truth Behind a Naval War Crime
Coles, Alan
ISBN: 0709025971
Robert Hale London 1986 First Edition
Hardcover With 21 photographic illustrations. The Baralong Affair was a British disgrace: a war crime unparalleled in the modern history of the Royal Navy. Until now its shameful details have been deliberately obscured, but its significance in delaying the entry of the United States into the First World War has never been evaluated. In 1915 the War Office sent out the Q-ship Baralong elaborately disguised as a US merchant ship. On encountering the U-27 she threw off the camouflage and sank the German vessel. The subsequent alleged murder in cold blood of some of the U-boat's survivors caused an international diplomatic furore. President Wilson turned away in horror; the Germans saw the incident as a valuable weapon of propaganda; and the British Admiralty battened down on all official records. The facts can now be told. In clear detail, Alan Coles reveals the appalling truth of the Baralong Affair. For the first time British, American and German eye-witness accounts of the atrocities have been collected together to explain - and finally to judge - this naval scandal. ; 220 x 140mm; 220 pages Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket

USN Cruiser Vs IJN Cruiser: Guadalcanal 1942
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781846034664
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, DUE22, 80 pages. Although the war in the Pacific is usually considered a carrier war, it was the cruisers that dominated the early fighting. This thrilling duel presents the cruiser clashes during the battles for Guadacanal, highlighting the Battle of Savo Island and the Battle of Cape Esperance. The first was a Japanese victory that resulted in the loss of four Allied cruisers. However, in the latter, the Americans managed to turn the tables despite the battle being fought throughout the night. This book presents a view of the design and development of the opposing weapons systems, illustrated with newly commissioned digital artwork. It uses firsthand accounts to bring the battles to life and explain why the Americans suffered early on, but eventually had their revenge.  As New

South Dakota Class Battleship
Wiper, Steve
ISBN: 9780982358313
Classic Warships Publishing  2009
Soft Cover New book, 72 pages. This book covers the South Dakota battleships. All four ships in the class are featured in color and black and white photos. With the release of the Trumpeter 1/700 and 1/350 kits, this book will prove to be a popular subject. Like his other books Steve Wiper has dug up some of the best high resolution photos available. The photos are sharp and clear and include captions pointing out the significance of each subject. The ships are covered from their construction to their demise. There are even some stunning photos of the damage inflicted on the South Dakota during the battle of Guadalcanal. Each major refit the ships received is covered and the changes are documented visually. The color photos are really sharp and make a good reference for modelers who are wanting to pain their ships in the most realistic manner.   As New

USS Lexington CV-2
Wiper, Steve
ISBN: 9780982358337
Classic Warships Publishing  2009
Soft Cover New book, 72 pages. There are 70 black and white photos, one colorized photo on the front cover and four color photos of her on the back cover. This book is a more in-depth look at the Lexington during her 1937 thru 1942 career. Since the previous book was released more photos have been found and Steve includes them in this new book. As always they are reproduced with the maximum amount of detail possible. The photos are nicely captioned and show the important features of the ship. They show the dramatic transformation the ship went thru leading up to and during World War Two. Most of these photos have never appeared in public before. Also included are the May 1941 refit drawings and a portion of her final refit drawings from April 1942. Copies of documents listing changes made to the carrier are provided as well. There have always been a lot of questions about the carriers rebuilding in April 42 before her loss at the Battle of the Coral Sea and this book should finally lay all of those to rest. Of particular interest is the labeled photos pointing out the locations of the 50 cal and 1.1" gun mounts as well as other notable features. Some images have been pulled from film footage and enhanced to show many of the shadowy details in new light. Images of the destroyers attending to the Lexington in her final moments is equally fascinating.  As New

Imperial Japanese Navy Submarines 1941-45
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781846030901
Osprey Pub Co Oxford, United Kingdom 2007
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG135. During World War II the Imperial Japanese Navy was at the forefront of submarine technology. It fielded the largest pre-nuclear submarines in the world, some capable of carrying floatplane bombers, which operated alongside fast combat vessels and midget submarines, all equipped with the best torpedoes available. The Japanese submarine fleet should have been an awe-inspiring force but, despite playing a crucial scouting role and enjoying several notable successes, it was surprisingly ineffective. Using unique color plates, Mark Stille describes the astounding technical advances of this range of vessels, and the wartime tactics responsible for their failure. Contents: Origins - Birth and growth of the Imperial Navy's submarine force, Development and operational history, I Series Submarines, RO Series Submarines, The Imperial Navy's submarine force - a post mortem, Bibliography, Color Plate Commentary, Index.  As New

Imperial Japanese Navy Destroyers 1919-45 (1): Minekaze to Shiratsuyu Classes
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781849089845
Osprey Pub Co  2013
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG198. During the Pacific War, arguably the most successful component of the Imperial Japanese Fleet was its destroyer force. These ships were generally larger than their Allied counterparts and were better armed in most cases. Armed with a large, long-range torpedo (eventually called Long Lance by the Allies), these ships proved themselves as formidable opponents. In the first part of the war, Japanese destroyers were instrumental in an unbroken string of Japanese victories. However, it was not until the Guadalcanal campaign that these ships fully demonstrated their power. In a series of night actions, these ships devastated Allied task forces with a number of daring night attacks using their deadly torpedoes. This volume will detail the history, weapons and tactics of the Japanese destroyers built before the war. This includes the famous Fubuki class (called "Special Type" by the Japanese, which were, when completed in the late 1920's, the most powerful class of destroyers in the world. This design forced all other major navies to follow suite and provided the basic design for the next many classes of Imperial Navy destroyers. This book will also cover the three classes built before the Special Type which were based on a German World War I design as well as two classes built after the advent of the Special Type. All of these ships had a rich history as they fought from the first battles of the Pacific War up until the very end when several accompanied the superbattleship Yamato on her death sortie. The final part of the book will be an analysis of the destroyer designs covered in the book which will include an examination of their strengths and weaknesses. The success (or lack of success) of these designs will be discussed and they will be compared to comparable Allied destroyer designs.  As New

Confederate Blockade Runner 1861-1865
Konstam, Angus
ISBN: 1841766364
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG092. The lifeblood of the Confederacy, the blockade runners of the Civil War usually began life as regular fast steam-powered merchant ships. They were adapted for the high-speed dashes through the Union blockade which closed off all the major Southern ports, and for much of the war they brought much-needed food, clothing and weaponry to the Confederacy. This book traces their operational history, including the development of purpose-built blockade running ships, and examines their engines, crews and tactics. It describes their wartime exploits, demonstrating their operational and mechanical performance, whilst examining what life was like on these vessels through accounts of conditions on board when they sailed into action. Contents: Introduction - Design and Development - Operation History - Variants - Colour plate commentary.  As New

Imperial Japanese Navy Heavy Cruisers 1941-45
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781849081481
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG176. Designed with little more than a passing nod to the international naval treaties of the inter-war period, the Imperial Japanese Navy’s heavy cruisers were fast and heavily armed. Like the other vessels of the Japanese Navy, the heavy cruisers were technologically superior to and far more innovative than their Allied rivals, whom they met in many of the major Pacific Theatre battles, including Midway and Leyte Gulf. Mark Stille continues his study of the IJN of WWII with this fascinating topic, addressing the design and development of all 18 ships in the six heavy cruiser classes, from pre-war construction and mid-war alterations, to their operational histories and eventual fates.  As New

Imperial Japanese Navy Destroyers 1919-45 (2): Asashio to Tachibana Classes
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781849089876
Osprey Pub Co  2013
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG202. During the Pacific War the most successful component of the Imperial Japanese Fleet was its destroyer force. These ships were larger and, in most cases, better-equipped than their Allied counterparts. Armed with a powerful, long-ranged torpedo, these ships proved formidable opponents. Initially, they were instrumental in an unbroken string of Japanese victories, but it was not until the Guadalcanal campaign that these ships fully demonstrated their power. In a series of daring night actions, they devastated Allied task forces with their deadly torpedoes. This volume details the history, weapons and tactics of the Japanese destroyers built just before and throughout the war, including the famous Kagero and Yugumo classes, the experimental destroyer Shimakaze that boasted a top speed of almost 40 knots and 15 torpedo tubes, and the Matsu class that represented the Japanese equivalent to an Allied destroyer escort. These ships were designed to be built quickly and cheaply, but proved to be very tough in combat.   As New

Imperial Japanese Navy Light Cruisers 1941-45
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781849085625
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG187. Like their heavy cruiser brethren, the light cruisers built by the Imperial Japanese Navy in the build-up to WWII paid little more than lip service to the international naval treaties that were intended to keep the naval powers on a level playing field. The eight classes of light cruiser developed by the IJN were fast, well-armed, and technologically superior to the fleets the Allied powers could bring to bear. Serving with distinction across the Pacific Theatre, the IJN's light cruisers were committed to such actions as Midway and Leyte Gulf. Mark Stille continues Osprey's coverage of the IJN of WWII, with this concise and complete study of all 25 ships of the 8 light cruisers classes, from their design and development through to their ultimate fates. Detailed Osprey artwork and rare period photographs from the Fukui collection held in Kure, Japan, illustrate this discussion and provide great visual references for some of the most advanced naval vessels of WWII.   As New

Davis, Rick E.
ISBN: 9780985714963
Classic Warships Publishing  2014
Soft Cover New book, 72 pages. Round Bridge Fletcher In 1941, the US Navy began building a fleet of large destroyers, its first design to rival the Japanese 'special type' destroyers that had first entered service more than a decade before. These "2,100-toners" became the most successful of all American destroyers, fast, roomy, capable of absorbing enormous punishment, and a flush deck design. This book covers the 58 units of the total of 175 built in the class, known as the "Round Bridge" design. Overall, aerial and many detail images, all period photography, highlight these valiant warships that carried the US Navy through the Second World War in the Pacific. Contained within the 72 pages and covers are 4 color photos and 122 B & W photos, most never before in print. This book is a "must have" for any interested in the visual history of this warship type and in US Navy destroyers of the World War Two era.  As New

US Heavy Cruisers 1941-45: Pre-war Classes
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781782006299
Osprey Pub Co  2014
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG210. Designed and produced under the regulations of the Washington Naval Treaty, the heavy cruisers of the Pensacola, Northampton, Portland, New Orleans and Wichita classes were exercises in compromise. While they possessed very heavy armament - the Pensacolas, for example, carrying a main battery of ten 8" guns - this came at the cost of protection - armor was the same thickness as a gun cruiser, and incapable of protecting the vessels from enemy 8" fire. As the classes evolved, these flaws began to be corrected, with the main battery being reduced, and increased protection being added to the vital areas of the ship. Despite these drawbacks, the pre-war heavy cruiser classes served with distinction throughout World War II.  As New

US Standard-Type Battleships 1941-45 (1): Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Mexico Classes
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781472806963
Osprey Pub Co  2015
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG220. Written by US Navy expert Mark Stille, this book offers a unique insight into the Standard-type classes of US battleships. It provides a detailed investigation into the histories of each of the warships in the Standard-type battleship classes, the first three of which, the Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Mexico, formed the US Navy's main force in the inter-war period. The Standard-types reflected a new design philosophy: by designing each class to meet common standards of maneuvrability and handling, vessels of different classes could operate as a single tactical unit without being limited by the performance of the slowest and least maneuvrable ship. At the time of their construction, these ships incorporated the latest design features such as triple gun turrets. Although they were rendered increasingly obsolete by evolving naval doctrines and the ascendance of the fast battleship, they served with distinction throughout World War II. This study combines analysis of design features and an absorbing narrative of operational histories to offer a comprehensive picture of the Standard-type battleships, from the brutal destruction of the USS Arizona to the triumphant occupation of Japan.  As New

Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG056. At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River, which was a vital strategic artery. First commissioned in January 1862, these ironclads spent the next two years battling for control of the Mississippi, fighting in a string of decisive engagements that altered the entire course of the war.  Soft Cover New book, 159 pages, 130+ photos. The USS Missouri was the last of ten battleships completed in the early 1940s and the last battleship commissioned in the U.S. Navy. In 1945 alone, "Mighty Mo" escorted the Pacific Fleet's fast carrier force to the launch point of the first airstrikes against Japan since the famed Doolittle raid in 1942; supported the two Iwo Jima invasion landings; and bombarded Okinawa, repelling a dozen daylight raids and four night attacks in the process. During that year, she also survived a kamikaze hit, launching a hunter-killer operation that sank a Japanese submarine, and bombarded Kyushu and several industrial targets on the Japanese home islands. After being called upon again to fight in the Korean War, she was decommissioned into the U.S. Navy reserve fleets. She was reactivated and modernised in 1984 and participated in the 1991 Gulf War. US Destroyers 1942-45: Wartime Classes
McComb, Dave
ISBN: 9781846034442
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, NVG165, 48 pages. Few if any 20th century warships were more justly acclaimed than the destroyers of the U.S. Navy’s Fletcher class. Admired as they were for their advanced and rakish design, it was their record as workhorses of the Pacific War that placed them among the most battle-tested and successful fighting ships of all time. This title describes the Fletchers and their Allen M. Sumner- and Gearing-class derivatives, their machinery, armament, and construction, with a listing of all 343 ships by hull number and builder. It features an operational history of the 287 ships commissioned during World War II, which traces the evolution of night surface action tactics in the Solomon Islands and the parallel development of the Combat Information Center; the drive across the Pacific and liberation of the Philippines with tables showing the rapid introduction of new squadrons; and the radar pickets’ climactic stand against kamikaze aircraft at Okinawa. Confederate Ironclad vs Union Ironclad: Hampton Roads 1862
Field, Ron
ISBN: 9781846032325
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE14. The Ironclad was a revolutionary weapon of war. Although iron was used for protection in the Far East during the 16th century, it was the 19th century and the American Civil War that heralded the first modern armored self-propelled warships. With the parallel pressures of civil war and the industrial revolution, technology advanced at a breakneck speed. It was the South who first utilized ironclads as they attempted to protect their ports from the Northern blockade. Impressed with their superior resistance to fire and their ability to ram vulnerable wooden ships, the North began to develop its own rival fleet of ironclads. Eventually these two products of this first modern arms race dueled at the battle of Hampton Roads in a clash that would change the face of naval warfare. Fully illustrated with cutting-edge digital artwork, rare photographs and first-person perspective gun sight views, this book allows the reader to discover the revolutionary and radically different designs of the two rival Ironclads - the CSS Virginia and USS Monitor - through an analysis of each ship's weaponry, ammunition and steerage. Compare the contrasting training of the crews and re-live the horrors of the battle at sea in a war which split a nation, communities and even families.  As New

This title details the 169 ships of ten classes introduced in the 1930s: early 1,500-tonners and 1,850-ton destroyer leaders designed to conform to the 1930 London Naval Treaty, plus the successor 1,570-ton Sims class and 1,620- and 1,630-ton Benson and Gleaves classes. In wartime, most 1,500-tonners and leaders initially saw front line duty in the Pacific but were relegated to secondary assignments as newer vessels arrived; while the later 1,620- and 1,630-tonners became the standard destroyers of the Atlantic War. This volume reveals the fascinating design story behind these pioneering classes - from the constraints of peacetime treaties to advances in propulsion engineering, and wartime modifications. With an operational overview of their service and tables listing all ships by class, builder, and initial squadron, this is the definitive guide to the pre-war US destroyer classes.  As New

With summaries of losses and decorations and specially commissioned artwork, this is a definitive book on the wartime US destroyer classes.  As New

Confederate Submarines & Torpedo Vessels 1861-1865
Konstam, Angus
ISBN: 1841767204
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG103. The primary Union strategy during the American Civil War was a massive naval blockade of the entire Southern coastline of the Confederacy, and it was in the effort to counter this blockade that the Confederates developed their first submarines and torpedo boats. This book traces the development of these new technologies, including the CSS ‘Little David’ and ‘Hunley’ - respectively the first torpedo boat and submarine to sink an enemy warship. The wreck of the ‘Hunley’ was raised in 2000, and this is the first book ever to integrate details of its recovery with an account of Confederate submarines in action. Contents: Introduction - Conception and role - The design of the submarine - The design of the torpedo boat - The spar torpedo - Operation - Spar-torpedo fleet - Bibliography - Colour plate commentary - Index.  As New

Confederate Ironclad 1861-65
Konstam, Angus
ISBN: 1841763071
Osprey Pub Co Oxford, United Kingdom 2001
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG041. The creation of a Confederate ironclad fleet was a miracle of ingenuity, improvisation and logistics. Surrounded by a superior enemy fleet, Confederate designers adapted existing vessels or created new ones from the keel up with the sole purpose of breaking the naval stranglehold on the nascent country. Her ironclads were build in remote cornfields, on small inland rivers or in naval yards within sight of the enemy. The result was an unorthodox but remarkable collection of vessels, which were able to contest the rivers and coastal waters of the South for five years. This title explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they fought. Contents: Introduction; Creation of a fleet; Ironclad designs; The European option; Shipbuilding; The Ironclad’s role; Officers and men; Ordnance; Life on board; Tactics; The Confederate Ironclads; Bibliography; Color plate commentary; Index.  As New

Osprey Pub Co University Park, Illinois, U.S.A. 2002
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG049. At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River and in the first few months both sides scrambled to gather a flotilla, converting existing riverboats for naval use. These ships were transformed into powerful naval weapons despite a lack of resources, trained manpower and suitable vessels. The creation of a river fleet was a miracle of ingenuity, improvisation and logistics, particularly for the South. This title describes their design, development and operation throughout the American Civil War. Covers: The Mississippi Theater, The Union River Fleet, The Confederate River Fleet, The Role of Gunboats, Ship List - Union, Ship List - Confederate.  As New
