Destination Dardanelles The Story of HMS E7
Wilson, Michael
Leo Cooper UK 1988
24.5cm Hardcover ex-Lothian lib, usual stamps, plastic over-wrapper, just a whisker under 500g.194 well-presented pages. Maps, photos. Submarine's operations in the North Sea & Sea of Marmora based on the diary of her commander 1914-15. A very apt book in the light of attempts to plan for the return of Australia's small sub from the seabed (I believe a figure of 20 million was an estimate) Contents >> E7 had a short career in World War I. She took part in the Second Heligoland Bight Patrol along with E5, D2 and D3. She and the other submarines returned from the patrol on 18 August 1914. Then on 30 June 1915, E7 began a 24-day patrol in the Sea of Marmara. She succeeded in sinking 13 ships and damaging many more. The German Submarine UB-14 was in port of Chanak to await repairs. While there on 4 September, word came of the British submarine E7 entangled in Turkish antisubmarine nets off Nagara Point. The U-Boat's commander, Oberleutnant zur See Heino von Heimburg, Prince Heinrich of Prussia, and UB-14's cook, a man by the name of Herzig, set out in a rowboat to observe the Turkish attempts to destroy E7. . . . buy the book & find out what was next.  Very Good

Imperial Japanese Navy Destroyers 1919-45 (1): Minekaze to Shiratsuyu Classes
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781849089845
Osprey Pub Co  2013
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG198. During the Pacific War, arguably the most successful component of the Imperial Japanese Fleet was its destroyer force. These ships were generally larger than their Allied counterparts and were better armed in most cases. Armed with a large, long-range torpedo (eventually called Long Lance by the Allies), these ships proved themselves as formidable opponents. In the first part of the war, Japanese destroyers were instrumental in an unbroken string of Japanese victories. However, it was not until the Guadalcanal campaign that these ships fully demonstrated their power. In a series of night actions, these ships devastated Allied task forces with a number of daring night attacks using their deadly torpedoes. This volume will detail the history, weapons and tactics of the Japanese destroyers built before the war. This includes the famous Fubuki class (called "Special Type" by the Japanese, which were, when completed in the late 1920's, the most powerful class of destroyers in the world. This design forced all other major navies to follow suite and provided the basic design for the next many classes of Imperial Navy destroyers. This book will also cover the three classes built before the Special Type which were based on a German World War I design as well as two classes built after the advent of the Special Type. All of these ships had a rich history as they fought from the first battles of the Pacific War up until the very end when several accompanied the superbattleship Yamato on her death sortie. The final part of the book will be an analysis of the destroyer designs covered in the book which will include an examination of their strengths and weaknesses. The success (or lack of success) of these designs will be discussed and they will be compared to comparable Allied destroyer designs.  As New

Imperial Japanese Navy Submarines 1941-45
Stille, Mark
ISBN: 9781846030901
Osprey Pub Co Oxford, United Kingdom 2007
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG135. During World War II the Imperial Japanese Navy was at the forefront of submarine technology. It fielded the largest pre-nuclear submarines in the world, some capable of carrying floatplane bombers, which operated alongside fast combat vessels and midget submarines, all equipped with the best torpedoes available. The Japanese submarine fleet should have been an awe-inspiring force but, despite playing a crucial scouting role and enjoying several notable successes, it was surprisingly ineffective. Using unique color plates, Mark Stille describes the astounding technical advances of this range of vessels, and the wartime tactics responsible for their failure. Contents: Origins - Birth and growth of the Imperial Navy's submarine force, Development and operational history, I Series Submarines, RO Series Submarines, The Imperial Navy's submarine force - a post mortem, Bibliography, Color Plate Commentary, Index.  As New
