Tristan
Closs, Hannah,
Andrew Dakers Ltd, London, 1940.
Hardcover. Ex-Library/No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 600 g; XII, 346 pages, in original blue cloth covered binding. The rubbing to the edges of the boards, and loss of colour to the cloth either side of the spine, darkening of the edges of the text block, offset tanning of front and rear end pages, "Chaucer Library" bookplates pasted to the lower part of the front board, and a number in ink at the top of the front free end page of the only indications that the book was ex-library. The author reworks the classic story of Tristan and Isolde, with "no pretensions to historical traditional voracity all too archaeological exactitude, and even if the lance and sword have been used to symbols, more enduring than the rifle and the tank, the heroism of single combat has come to appear less distant, whilst the "fairytale" of Tristan's rudderless gift seems almost to anticipate the fate of airmen of the present-day drifting wounded in their collapsible boats." -- page XII Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Song of Eve; Mythology and Symbols of the Goddess
Mascetti, Manuela Dunn,
ISBN: 0671688901
Fireside (Simon & Schuster), New York, 1990.

Original colour illustrated paperback binding with attached fold over flaps. Illustrated throughout with colour, monotone, and black-and-white photography and reproductions of art work. This book is an illustration of the very different dimensions and aspects of the Goddess; not a journey through time and its changes, but a table laid for a very rich banquet in which we may see the Goddesses at work and in many guises, guises that are suddenly recognisable in each of our lives and actions, providing an exciting and new form of identification which in turn will give understanding so that the Song Of Eve may be sung once again. -- introduction Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Aquarian Guide to African Mythology
Knappert, Jan
ISBN: 0850308852
Northamptonshire Aquarian Press, 1990  1990
Large 8vo softcover 272pp b/w illus. very good. This modest guide to African Mythology does not pretend to give more than an anthology of myths and mythological figures. There are many myths, legends and fables in the more than one thousand languages of Africa. In some entries a myth or fable is told as an illustration of the mysterious character of some animals, e.g. the frog. The reading list at the end of this book is likewise only a selection. The illustrations too, have been inspired by numerous sources. They represent works of traditional African art, some of them very old, so that in many cases not only the artist and his family, but his entire ethnic group have long since died. These art works are now safely stored in the museums of Europe and elsewhere.

The Grail: The Truth Behind the Myth
Matthews, John
ISBN: 1841812676
Godsfield Press Ltd November 15, 2005  2005
8vo hardcover 176pp near fine. The real truth about the Grail, as this entertaining and informative book makes clear, is more exciting than the most fantastic adventure novel. Tracing the Grail's story from its earliest appearance in myth through history, literature, and popular entertainment, this comprehensive illustrated book explores the Grail's secret history and reveals why it continues to fascinate us today. The book unearths the earliest versions of the Grail in myth, examines the part the Grail plays in the events of Christ's Passion, and reveals the truth about the secret societies that "guard" the Grail mysteries. As readers will discover, the Grail also made a mysterious appearance in Arthur's Camelot and disguised itself as the holy bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalen, as the philosopher's stone, and as a touchstone of transformation for Jungian psychologists. The book also introduces us to modern Grail seekers and reveals why even the Nazis sought the Grail. This riviting account sets readers straight about the mysterious relic's meaning and purpose. As we discover what the Grail has meant to the men and women of the past, we come to understand the power of this ancient idea in our own life and why we continue to seek it.

The Mystery and Meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls
Shanks, Hershel
ISBN: 0679457577
Random House March 24, 1998  1998
8vo softcover 246pp very good. Fifty years ago, in a cave near Qumran on the Dead Sea, a Bedouin shepherd made a remarkable discovery--a cache of scrolls, in Hebrew and Aramaic, dating roughly from the time of Jesus. Here, in hundreds of literary fragments, was a window into an unknown world--the world where Christianity and modern Judaism were born.Everyone has heard about the scrolls, but what, exactly, are their contents? Who wrote them? What do they reveal? Do they undermine the authority of the Hebrew Bible? Do they shed new light on Jesus, his sayings and his sacraments? Until recently, only a handful of experts could answer these questions, for only they had access to the scrolls. Now, thanks to the liberating efforts of scholars such as Hershel Shanks, the scrolls are the property of us all, their mystery at long last yielding to meaning. Here, in arresting detail, is the most complete assessment of the scrolls to date. It is a history of their discovery and dissemination, a summary of their scholarly interpretation, and a thoughtful meditation on their ultimate significance. Above all, it is an act of generosity--a great scholar's gift to the common understanding of the most important ancient texts found in modern times.

The Holy Blood And The Holy Grail
Baigent, Michael & Leigh, Richard & Lincoln, Henry
ISBN: 0099682419
Hutchinson, Great Britain, 1996. Reprint
Paperback Paperback. Very Good/. Reprint. 558 pages. Reading creases to spine. Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. Pages are lightly tanned. A vast number of people have become enthralled with the story of the nineteenth-century French priest who, in his mountain village at the foot of the Pyrenees, discovered something which enabled him to amass and spend a fortune of millions of pounds. The tale seems to begin with buried treasure and then turns into an unprecedented historical detective story - a modern Grail quest leading back through cryptically coded parchments, secret societies, the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the 12th and 13th centuries and a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1,300 years ago. Now, after more than ten years of research, Henry Lincoln and his co-authors, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, publish the results of their inquiry into this taunting enigma. What really lies at the core of this discovery of Rennes-le-Chateau is not material riches, but a secret - a secret of explosive and controversial proportions, which radiates out from the little Pyrenees village to encompass the whole of Western civilisation. The secret is no mere historical curiosity. Its repercussions stretch all the way to the contemporary politics and the entire edice of the Christian faith. It involves nothing less than the Holy Grail - not as a mystical chalice of medieval legend but as something more tangible which has played a vital role in the shaping of Western history. The enigma extends to our own day, implicating such men as de Gaulle and Malraux. It also casts an astonishing new light on such events as the Renaissance and the Crusades. Most startlingly it pertains to the origins of Christianity and the very identity of Jesus. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Myths, Legends & Folklore; History. ISBN: 0099682419. "This admirably produced and well-translated volume of stories from the Sanskrit takes the Western reader into one of the Golden Ages of India. . . . The world in which the tales are set is one which placed a premium upon slickness and guile as aids to success. . . . Merchants, aristocrats, Brahmins, thieves and courtesans mingle with vampires, demi-gods and the hierarchy of heaven in a series of lively or passionate adventures. The sources of the individual stories are clearly indicated; the whole treatment is scholarly without being arid."--"The Times Literary Supplement " "Fourteen tales from India, newly translated with a terse and vibrant effectiveness. Celtic Myth and Legend
Squire, Charles,
ISBN: 0878770305
Newcastle publishing, United States of America, 1975. reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. reprint. Now back in print for the first time in many years is one of the most comprehensive studies of Celtic mythology legend and poetry ever written, presenting the entire enthralling panorama of the mythical and legendary traditions of the ancient Gaelic and British Celts. Here, in clear, compact, readable form are stories of all the chief characters of Celtic myth: the Gaelic gods and the giants they battled; the "Champions of the Red Branch" of Ulster, heroes of the great "Irish Iliad;" Finn and the Fenians; and the gods and heroes of the ancient Britons, down through the great deeds of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Here is a book that covers the entire spectrum of this fascinating area of folklore, with numerous illustrations. It is not a book for scholars only, but for anyone who is interested in the roots of many of the world's finest plays, poems, short stories and novels. – rear panel blurb Originally published in the early part of the last century by Gresham press, this book reproduces in black-and-white the images of the original book. The 2012 Story; The Myths, Fallacies, and Truth Behind the Most Intriguing Date in History
Jenkins, John Major,
ISBN: 1585427667
Tarcher, New York, 2009. First Edition
Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. First Edition. On December 21, 2012, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, a 5,125-year cycle calendar system pioneered by the Maya, will come to an end. At the same time, the earth, the sun, and the centre of the galaxy will come together in an extremely rare cosmic alignment. More and more people believe that the world as we know it will experience a transformation in 2012, but few are aware of the complete history or significance of the date. John Major Jenkins, among the most authoritative voices of the 2012 movement, has written a definitive explanation of one of the most thought-provoking phenomena of our time. Drawing from his own groundbreaking research (including his involvement in the modern reconstruction of Mayan 2012 cosmology) and more than two decades of extensive study of Mayan culture, Jenkins has created the crucial guide to understanding the story of 2012--an essential overview of the history, theory, cultures, and personalities that have brought this extraordinary idea into modern awareness. Jenkins provides illuminating answers to some of the most-asked questions about 2012, including: - How did the early Maya devise the calendar that gives us the cycle ending in 2012, and how does it work? - How did the calendar come to be rediscovered and reconstructed in our era? - What controversies and intrigues surround the topic, and what do scholars and researchers have to say about them? - How can we cut through all the noise about 2012 and gain true wisdom from the Mayan teachings about this moment? – dust jacket blurb The book is 2nd hand, it does not appear to have been read. It is illustrated with some drawings and photographs within the text. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 496 pages. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. Chinese Mythology; An Introduction
Birrell, Anne M.,
ISBN: 0801861837
Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 1999. Reprint
Softcover Softcover. Very Good Condition/. Reprint. Book Description\n\nBirrell provides English translations of some 300 representative myth narratives selected from over 100 classical texts, many of which have never before been translated into any Western language. Organizing the narratives according to themes and motifs common to world mythology, Birrell addresses issues of source, dating, attribution, textural variants, multiforms, and context. Drawing on exhaustive work in comparative mythology, she surveys the development of Chinese myth studies, summarizes the contribution of Chinese and Japanese scholars to the study of Chinese myth since the 1920s, and examines special aspects of traditional approaches to Chinese myth. The result is an unprecedented guide to the study of Chinese myth for specialists and nonspecialists alike. – rear panel blurb book is secondhand, it is clean without damage, and free of annotation.
