Ju 87 Stuka
Jackson, Robert
ISBN: 184037439X
Airlife Pub Ltd United Kingdom 2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 69 photos, 17 colour profiles. In the first three years of Word War Two, the word Stuka became synonymous with terror. Across the face of Europe, troops and civilians alike quailed under the banshee wail of the Junkers 87 dive bomber as it plummeted towards its target. By 1943 the Stuka's day as a dive bomber was virtually over but it came into its own as a tank buster on the Russian front, where it fought to the bitter end. This book tells the story of the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, the units that operated it in its many campaigns, and the men who flew it into combat.  As New

Typhoon Wings of 2nd TAF 1943-45
Thomas, Chris
ISBN: 9781846039737
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM86. The Typhoon was the RAF's chosen heavyweight fighter-bomber to support the British and Canadian Armies during the invasion of northwest Europe. A specialist in the aircraft (his father flew them in WW2), author Chris Thomas has done much research on the Typhoon's operations with 2nd TAF during this crucial period of the war. His research reveals for the first time the extent, and chronology, of the struggle to equip 18 RAF and RCAF squadrons in time for D-Day, and how this feat was only narrowly achieved. These 18 squadrons (later increased to 20) were organised into highly mobile, self-supporting wings that provided devastating close support for the British and Canadian armies in their advance across northwest Europe. Thomas' book analyzes the tactics employed by the Typhoon squadrons during these epic events, supported by the words of the pilots themselves. These battles were by no means one-sided, with the Typhoons' nemesis - the highly effective German flak units - exacting a terrible toll on 2nd TAF units. Indeed, some 400 aircraft and 150 pilots were lost during the Normandy campaign alone. Losses such as these led Air Chief Marshal Sir Harry Broadhurst, Air Officer Commanding 83 Group (which controlled more than half of 2nd TAF's Typhoon squadrons), to remark 'I suppose that flying one of these aircraft was the most dangerous task the Air Force has ever asked anybody to do'. Along with photographs and diagrams, the book includes artwork by the author as well, making for a comprehensive and authoritative guide.  As New

Sopwith Triplane Aces of World War 1
Franks, Norman
ISBN: 9781841767284
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 100+ photos, 45 color profiles, 4 scale drawings. ACE62. The inspiration behind the iconic Fokker Dr I, Sopwith's Triplane was built as a replacement for the company's hugely successful, and much loved, Pup. Thanks to its massive wing area, the revolutionary Triplane boasted an unmatched rate of climb and greatly improved manoeuvrability. Indeed, when the type made its combat debut in late 1916, the Triplane could easily out-fight any other aircraft operated by either side. Used exclusively by the Royal Naval Air Service and the French Navy, theTriplane had a far greater impact on the aerial war over the Western Front than its meagre production numbers really deserved. Pilots such as Ray Collishaw, Bob Little and Roderic Dallas all enjoyed success in the bloody struggle for aerial supremacy over the Western Front in 1917. The first volume in print devoted exclusively to Triplane aces, this book includes numerous first-hand accounts, detailed appendices, more than 90 rare photographs and over 40 all-new colour profiles and planforms. Contents: The Sopwith Triplane Scout, Naval Eight, No 9 Naval Squadron, No 10 Naval and the Black Flight, Appendices.  As New

Victor Units of the Cold War
Brookes, Andrew
ISBN: 9781849083393
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM88. Of the three jet bombers that formed the RAF’s V-Force in the early years of the Cold War, the Victor was perhaps the most technologically advanced. First flown on 24 December 1952, the Victor entered service in B 1 configuration in November 1957. Further improvements were introduced with the B 2, which was optimized for high altitude. Most B 2s were equipped to carry the Blue Steel stand-off missile, but eight were modified in the strategic reconnaissance role because the Victor 2 was then the longest-ranging aircraft in the RAF. The Victor ceased to be a low-level bomber after the nuclear mission was taken over by the Royal Navy’s Polaris submarine force in the late 1960s. Thereafter, Victor 1s and 2s continued in frontline service as airborne tankers, supporting operations such as the Falklands War and the Gulf War until the last Victor flight took place on 30 November 1993. Contents: Introduction, Chapter One - The Victor Emergent, Chapter Two - High-level Cold War bombing, Chapter Three - Skybolt and Blue Steel, Chapter Four - Low-level Operations, Chapter Five - Middle East and Far East adventures, Chapter Six - Versatile Victor (MRR and tanking), Chapter Seven - Victor Ludorum (Falklands, Desert Storm).  As New

ISBN: 9781846039850
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE96. The 357th Fighter Group produced 42 aces, more than any other group within the USAAF. It was also the first group in the Eighth Air Force to be equipped with the P-51. Thanks to this fighter and the talented pilots assigned to the group (men such as Bud Anderson, Kit Carson, John England and Chuck Yeager) the 357th achieved a faster rate of aerial victories than any other Eighth Air Force group during the final year of the war. It also claimed the highest number of aerial kills - 56 - in a single mission. The group was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations (the unit equivalent of the Medal of Honor). Written by Chris Bucholtz, this book is crammed full of first-hand accounts, superb photography and some of the most colorful profiles to be found in World War II aviation.   As New

AH-64 Apache Units of Operations Enduring Freedom & Iraqi Freedom
Bernstein, Jonathan
ISBN: 9781841768489
Osprey Pub Co  2005
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM57. After the attacks on 11 September 2001, Apache units made significant contributions to the Coalition campaign against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. Functioning as the 'killer' part of US Army Hunter-killer teams, Apaches sought out and brought overwhelming firepower to bear on Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, as well as providing direct support to Coalition troops on the ground. Apaches spearheaded the advance of the 3rd Infantry and the 101st airborne divisions into Iraq, engaging in some of the heaviest fighting along the western axis of advance. Weather and enemy fire took a heavy toll on Apaches operating in Western Iraq, but the resilience and flexibility of the Apache was central to the success of this campaign.   As New

US Navy F-4 Phantom II MiG Killers 1965-70
Elward, Brad
ISBN: 9781841761633
Osprey Pub Co  2001
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM26. For every American fighter pilot involved in the Vietnam War, the ultimate goal was to 'kill a MiG'. In eight years of conflict 43 Vietnamese Peoples Air Force aircraft were claimed by US Navy and US Marine Corps Phantom II crews, and one single ace crew produced. Navy Phantom IIs scored the first kills of the Vietnam War, in April 1965, as well as scoring the last in January 1973. This volume charts the successes of the navy fighter crews as they encountered 'MiGs, Missiles and AAA' over the jungles of North Vietnam.   As New

US Army AH-1 Cobra Units in Vietnam
Bernstein, Jonathan
ISBN: 9781841766065
Osprey Pub Co  2003
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM41. Bell’s AH-1 Cobra was the first dedicated helicopter gunship to reach frontline service anywhere in the world. Developed as a private venture by the manufacturer, and based on the mechanics of the ubiquitous UH-1 Huey, the Cobra proved a huge success once introduced into combat with the US Army in 1966. Built as a key weapon in the Advanced Aerial Fire Support System concept of 1965, the AH-1 was one of the few aircraft to reach the combat zone after actual combat experience went into its design. The AH-1 helped reduce the losses being suffered by vulnerable troop transport helicopters by providing effective fire suppression during airmobile operations. This book explores its history, technology and crew.   As New

Slovakian and Bulgarian Aces of World War 2
Rajlich, Jiri
ISBN: 9781841766522
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE058. In 1939, Slovakia signed a protection agreement with the German Reich and joined the attack on Poland, where its Avia B-534-equipped fighter squadrons claimed their first kills. In October 1942, having made do with obsolete aircraft, the Slovaks were equipped with Bf 109Es and eventually acquired 43 Messerschmitt fighters. The Slovaks would claim over 215 kills. Although it supported German efforts in Yugoslavia and Greece, Bulgaria did not declare war on Russia. First seeing action in August 1943, Bulgarian fighter pilots used their Bf 109Gs to good effect. From late 1943 through to mid-1944, the Bulgarian pilots attempted to defend the country from American bombers, and Stoyanov and Bochev made ace during this period.   As New

Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM43. This book follows the story of the B-52 from its genesis to its first combat missions in June 1965 and through to the briefly sustained but bloodily fought Linebacker II offensive in late 1972. Ovcacik, M; Susa, K.
ISBN: 8086637034
4+ Publishing Prague 2006
Soft Cover New book, 28 pages. Two final versions of Supermarine's Type 356 - the Mk.22 and 24s - stand at the pinnacle of the propeller driven fighter development initialized in the early 1930s by the ingenious Reginald J. Mitchell. These late Mark aeroplanes, with excellent manoeuvrability, and with speed, climb and ceiling far superior to earlier marks, truly perpetuate the whole Spitfire family. Too late to take part in any World War II action the ultimate Spitfire variants equipped only a limited number of operational, reserve and auxiliary units of the Royal Air Force. However, many found their way to overseas air forces - Hong Kong, Egypt, Singapore, Syria and what was then Southern Rhodesia. Some of these aeroplanes were still in service as late as the mid-1950s, by which time their fighter role had been taken over by other jet-powered types. ISBN: 9788086637204
4+ Publishing  2009
Soft Cover New book, 28 pages. Designed by a four-nation European consortium, the Eurofighter EF-2000 represents the 4th generation combat jet, primarily intended for air defence but also having a limited air-to-ground capability. With the prototypes flying in 1994 and the first production aircraft in 2003, the initial contract called for 620 planes for the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, while later, Austria and Saudi Arabia also became the type users. Both single- and two-seaters were evolved and their manufacture has been shared among the four respective countries. The "Dozen Set" line of handbooks is aimed especially at scale modellers. F-100 Super Sabre Units of the Vietnam War
Davies, Peter; Menard, David
ISBN: 9781849084468
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM89. While the F-105 Thunderchief and F-4 Phantom flew the majority of the fighter-bomber missions over North Vietnam, the Thunderchief's service predecessor, the F-100 Super Sabre stayed on to fight the air war in South Vietnam until June 1971. Although it was designed as an air defence fighter, and was later given nuclear capability as the mainstay of Tactical Air Command's deterrent posture, it was the F-100's toughness, adaptability and reliability that made it ideally suited to the incessant 'taxi-rank' close support and counter-insurgency missions in Vietnam. The jet's four 20 mm cannon and external loads of bombs, rockets and fire-bombs defeated many enemy incursions, with US troops in contact expressing a preference for the accuracy and skill of F-100 pilots to save them in situations where ordnance had to be dropped very close to their own lines. Many courageous deeds were performed, although 242 F-100s and 87aircrew were lost in action. Used at the start of Operation Rolling Thunder in March 1965 as an escort for F-105 strikes, the Super Sabre fought MiGs and one pilot made a credible claim for a MiG-17 destroyed, but the more capable F-4 Phantom II soon replaced it in this role. The air-to-ground war was fought by F-100C/D/F pilots from 21 TAC and Air National Guard squadrons at six bases in South Vietnam and Thailand. From September 1965, a number of two-seat F-100Fs were equipped to detect and pinpoint SA-2 missile sites, and they led F-105s in to destroy them in hazardous missions that founded the suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD) techniques developed for F-105F and F-4C 'Wild Weasel' aircraft later in the war. Other F-100Fs replaced fragile piston-engined forward air control (FAC) aircraft, providing more survivable high-speed airborne management of strike missions. Maj George Day, awarded the Medal of Honor in 1973, was the first leader of this 'Misty FAC' unit. The aircraft's strengths and eccentricities will be examined through analysis of its performance and the anecdotes of those who flew and serviced it.   As New

AV-8B Harrier II Units of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm
Nordeen, Lon
ISBN: 9781849084444
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM90. In the 1970s the USMC bought the AV-8A Harrier from the UK to test V/STOL concepts for close air support. A successful funding battle was subsequently fought in the 1980s to secure military, political and economic support to expand this concept to develop and field the second generation AV-8B Harrier II from the late 1980s onward. The AV-8B was, and still is, the only tactical aircraft that could deploy with Marine forces on amphibious assault ships and provide air cover and close air support separate from large deck aircraft carriers. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, a coalition of nations launched Operation Desert Shield in order to defend Saudi Arabia. The Harrier II was among the first tactical air assets to be deployed to the region to support ground forces in their efforts to halt the advance of Iraqi forces at the border with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. During Operation Desert Storm, the five units flying the AV-8B in-theatre became some of the top tactical squadrons of choice by air mission planners for allied battlefield preparation and close air support. This was due to the AV-8B's capabilities, proximity to the battle zone and the proven abilities of Marine pilots and forward air controllers, who were closely integrated with ground forces and knew their business so well. The untold story of the AV-8B in this conflict is vividly brought to life by the author through firsthand accounts and period photography sourced from those that were there, as well as official archives. This is planned to be the first of three volumes on USMC Harrier IIs in combat, with follow-on titles covering the jet's operations in Iraq in 2003-08 and Afghanistan in 2001-2009.   As New

F-105 Wild Weasel vs SA-2 ’Guideline’ SAM
Davies, Peter
ISBN: 9781849084710
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE35. Although America entered the Vietnam War with some of the world's most sophisticated combat aircraft, the majority of their missions involved conventional bombing and fighter engagements that employed quite similar tactics to those previously used in the Korean War and World War 2. The real step change in aerial fighting came with the use of air-to-air and ground-to-air missiles. Developing methods of defeating the latter involved the rapid evolution of technology and tactics which, over twenty years later, would enable the USA to win the air war over Iraq in Operation Desert Storm in a matter of hours. During the Vietnam War, the appearance of Russian SA-2 missiles around Hanoi in 1965 alarmed US officials. Initially reluctant to attack the missile sites, the increasing toll of US aircraft and the ways in which the SA-2s inhibited bombing tactics meant that new methods of dealing with the sites had to be developed quickly. Electronic reconnaissance aircraft had some success with jamming of the missiles' guidance systems at long range, but the real solution lay with an aircraft that could detect the radars at closer range, offer itself as a target to the missile sites and attack them before missiles could be launched at US bombers. F-105Fs equipped with new technology quickly became an essential addition to all USAF strike missions over North Vietnam. Using new Shrike and Standard ARM anti-radiation missiles and radar detection equipment developed by the US Navy, the F-105F and its more sophisticated successor, the F-105G, continued their hair-raising battles with North Vietnamese missile batteries throughout the rest of the Vietnam War. Here, author Peter Davies recounts the dramatic contests between these newly outfitted F-105s and the missile sites in Vietnam in a highly illustrated account, drawing on first-hand pilot experiences and technical manuals to present a full history of the technologies and tactics of both sides.   As New

When originally conceived, the French SPAD VII and German Albatros D II represented steps away from an emphasis on maneuver in aerial combat in favor of speed and durability - factors that came into play in hit-and-run tactics. At the end of 1916, however, Albatros tried to have the best of both worlds by incorporating the sesquiplane wing of the nimble Nieuport 17 into its D III. The result combined the better downward view and maneuverability of the Nieuport with the power and twin machine guns of the Albatros D II, but at a high price - a disturbing tendency for the single-spar lower wing to fail in a dive. While Albatros (and the Austrian Oeffag firm, which built the fighter under license) sought to alleviate that weakness with various reinforcing measures, the Germans developed tactics to maximize the D III's strengths and minimize its shortcomings. At the same time, the French worked to improve the SPAD VII with more power and a more reliable cooling system before moving on to the twin-gunned SPAD XIII. While all that was going on, the Albatros D III became a mainstay of the German and Austro-Hungarian air services in frequent encounters with SPAD VIIs flown by French, Belgian, British, Italian and American airmen.   As New

P-47 Thunderbolt vs Bf 109G/K: Europe 1943-45
Bowman, Martin
ISBN: 9781846033155
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE11. The P-47 climbed like a homesick angel and dived for the deck like a rock. This was due to the mighty power of its air-cooled, turbo-supercharged Double Wasp engine, combined with a brutish barrel-shaped airframe. The deadly firepower was totally destructive. The world's largest single-engined fighter when the USA entered the war, the P-47's 18 cylinders vibrated the whole aircraft like it was going to destroy itself. More Thunderbolts were built than any other American fighter in history. In December 1942, the P-47 was the only readily available American-produced high performance fighter. At altitudes up to 15,000 ft, its rival, the Bf 109G, had all-round better performance than the P-47C, most notably in rate of climb. The Thunderbolt's performance progressively improved above 15,000 ft, and between 25,000 to 30,000 ft it surpassed those of the enemy fighters, except for rate of climb and acceleration - the P-47 was double the weight of a Bf 109. Although the latter could initially accelerate well in a dive, the P-47C soon overhauled it and easily out-dived the Messerschmitt from high altitudes. P-47 pilots were advised to avoid combats at low altitudes and slow speeds. Thunderbolt pilots were synonymous with the might of the Eighth Air Force's fighter strength from the summer of 1943 until the end of the conflict, during which time the P-47 was operated in the escort, ground strafing and dive-bombing roles. The P-47 was flown exclusively by Gabby Gabreski and Robert Johnson, the top two scoring American fighter aces in the ETO/MTO. All told, the Thunderbolt was flown by 18 of the top 30 American aces in Europe during the war, while the Bf 109G was the staple Defense of the Reich fighter from 1943 to war's end. The numerous aspects of the pilots' training, the tactics they used once in combat and the leading edge technology employed by these second generation World War 2 fighters is covered in detail, as is the continual development of both fighter types. Finally, the key elements of both fighters - the airframe, engine, armament and flying characteristics -are also explored through first hand accounts from the aces that went head-to-head in the war-torn skies of Europe.   As New

SE 5a vs Albatros D V: Western Front 1917-18
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781846034718
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE20. Amid the ongoing quest for aerial superiority during World War I, the late spring of 1917 saw two competing attempts to refine proven designs. The Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5a incorporated improvements to the original SE 5 airframe along with 50 more horsepower to produce a fast, reliable ace-maker. The Albatros D V, a sleeker development of the deadly D III of 'Bloody April' notoriety, proved to be more disappointing as it suffered a rash of lower wing failures. Nevertheless, Albatrosen remained the most numerically important fighters available when the Germans launched their final offensive on March 21 1918. Despite its shortcomings, German tactics and skill made the Albatros D V a dangerous foe that SE 5a pilots dismissed at their peril. This title tells the story of the design and development of these two fighters and concludes with their dramatic fights in the last year of World War I.   As New

USN F-4 Phantom II vs VPAF MiG-17: Vietnam 1965-72
Davies, Peter
ISBN: 9781846034756
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE23. The Vietnam War placed unexpected demands upon American military forces and equipment, which had been focused on the probability of tactical nuclear warfare. The principal US naval fighter, the McDonnell F-4 Phantom, had originally been designed to defend the Fleet from air attack at long range. However, its tremendous power and bomb-carrying capacity made it an obvious candidate for the attack mission in Vietnam from 1965 onwards. Its opponent was the MiG-17, a direct descendant of the MiG-15, which had given USAF Sabre jets a hard fight in the Korean War. This book brings to life their dangerous duels and includes detailed cockpit views and other specially commissioned artwork to highlight the benefits and shortcomings of each plane type. It was in the skies over Vietnam that many of the techniques of air combat evolved as pilots learned how to use and to defeat supersonic fighters for the first time.   As New

Fw 190 Sturmbocke vs B-17 Flying Fortress: Europe 1944-45
Forsyth, Robert
ISBN: 9781846039416
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE24. The Fw 190 was one of the best air superiority aircraft of World War II, and when it first appeared over the Channel in 1941 it sent shockwaves through the Allied air commands. By 1944, these fighters had been up-gunned to serve as the front line of defence against the Allied bombing campaign. Although the Fw 190s were responsible for shooting down hundreds of Allied bombers, they met their match against the USAAF B-17 ‘Flying Fortress’. Capable of carrying 4,000 lbs of bombs and bristling with .50cal machine guns, the B-17 could sow death in every direction. Using brand-new artwork and first-hand accounts, this book recreates the deadly drama in the skies above Germany in the closing stages of the war. Hurricane I vs Bf 110: 1940
Holmes, Tony
ISBN: 9781846039454
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE29. The Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter and saw significant combat during the fight over France and the Battle of Britain. One of its principal opponents in 1940 was the Bf 110 twin-engined, two-seat heavy fighter. Following the invasion of France, these fighters clashed regularly as the RAF's Hurricanes attacked German bomber formations defended by Bf 110. Although the Hurricane had the upper hand when it came to maneuverability, the Bf 110 outclassed it in terms of fire power, with its mix of machine guns and cannon. This is the story of the dramatic battles in the skies over France and the Channel as Britain desperately tried to hold back the German onslaught from her shores.   As New

Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War
Krylov, Leonid; Tepsurkaev, Yuriy
ISBN: 9781846032998
Osprey Publishing Ltd Oxford, United Kingdom 2008
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 72 photos, 36 color profiles, 8 1/72 scale drawings. ACE82. The Soviet Union began assisting the People's Republic of China in its establishment of a modern air force in 1950, when Soviet Air Force regiments were sent to train local pilots. China's involvement in the Korean War in late October 1950 inevitably drew Soviet pilots into the war, with a total of 52 Soviet pilots scoring five or more victories there. The history of these covert actions has been a long-buried secret and this book is the first English publication to detail the only instance when the Cold War became 'hot'. This book uncovers Soviet combat experiences during the Korean War from detailed unit histories and rare first-hand account. With access to extensive Russian archives, the authors offer an enthralling insight into an air war that has been largely covered up and neglected. Illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and detailed full colour profiles, this book is a unique opportunity to read about an often-forgotten aspect of the Cold War. Contents: Motives for the Soviet Air Force's participation in the Korean War; Reasons for considerable exaggeration of kills claimed by Soviet pilots, compared with real losses to UN forces; Initial participation of Soviet pilots in the Korean War; Establishment of the 64th IAK; Combat employment; Combat operations of La-11 night interceptors of the 351st IAP; First success of MiG-15bis nightfighters.  As New

Arab MiGs Volume 1: Mikoyan I Gurevich MiG-15 and MiG-17 in Service with Air Forces of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco and Syria
Cooper, Tom; Nicolle, David
ISBN: 9780982553923
Harpia Publishing  2009
Soft Cover New book, 256 pages. Starting in 1955, and for the following 20 years, MiG-15 and MiG-17 formed the backbone of several Arab air forces. They played a prominent role in four major wars and dozens of minor incidents. Covering the first decade of this period, this study - Arab MiGs, Volume 1, the first in a series of publications - provides a unique and previously unavailable insight into the service history of both types with five Arab air forces. Even more so, it tells the story of the people that flew MiG-15s and MiG-17s in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and Syria. Several of whom became dominant political figures in the recent history of these countries. The reason why Arab countries began purchasing MiGs and thus became embroiled in the Cold War is approached and discussed from an entirely new and original - Arab - point of view. Details about combat operations during three major wars between Arabs and Israel, as well as the war in Yemen of the 1960s, are reconstructed on basis of primary evidence, in the form of original documents and participants' recollections. Aircraft colours, unit insignia, serial- and construction numbers are described in unprecedented detail. Over 200 photos, colour artworks, maps and tables illustrate the story of aircraft and their crews.  As New

Luftwaffe Viermot Aces 1942-45
Forsyth, Robert
ISBN: 9781849084383
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE101. This book will recount the actions and personalities of the Luftwaffe fighter force who excelled in this tough and grim form of aerial warfare. Planned as six chapters, in Chapter 1 the author will describe the initial onslaught of the USAAF air offensive and the German response in 1942 and 1943 during which time tactics of defence were developed and refined, from close-range, head-on attacks against massed formations of B-17s to attacks from the rear. Chapter 2 will detail the continuing air campaign, including the bitter battles of Schweinfurt and Berlin with biographies of many of the leading aces. Chapter 3 will focus on one Gruppe, II./JG I, during the desperate first four months of 1944 when the unit was operating at full stretch against the Allied bombing campaign directed at the German aircraft plants. Chapter 4 will deal with the deployment of the twin-engined Bf 110G, Me 210 and Me 410 Zerstörer (destroyers), hurriedly converted and thrown into the battle, heavily armed with 37 mm cannon, weapons packs of twin MG 151/20 20 mm cannon and 21 cm air-to-air mortars intended to break up the defensive cohesion of the bomber formations. Chapter 5 will cover the desperate missions of Sturmstaffel 1 and IV./JG 3, II./JG 4 and II./JG 300, the so-called 'Sturmgruppen' ('Close Assault Groups'). The final chapter will portray the new dimension in aerial warfare from the autumn of 1944 - the Me 262 jet-powered interceptor. Fighter aces and those who became 'jet aces' whilst flying with JG 7 included Georg-Peter Eder (53 victories), Heinrich Ehrler (201 victories), Adolf Glunz (71 victories), Klaus Neumann (32 victories), Viktor Petermann (64 victories), Rudi Rademacher (102 victories), and Hans Waldmann (132 victories).   As New

Boulton Paul Defiant
Listemann, Phil H; Thomas, Andrew
ISBN: 9782953254433
Philedition  2009
Soft Cover New book, 50 pages, 40 photos, 12 colour profiles. This, the eighth booklet of P. Listemann’s 'Allied Wings' series, is dedicated to the Boulton Paul Defiant and its service during 1940 as a day-fighter with 264 Squadron and 141 Squadron of the RAF. It concentrates on the unique deployment of the Defiant as a purely turret-equipped fighter, through initial successes during the Battle of France period, and the later disappointing and costly missions flown during the Battle of Britain. Subsequent use of the aircraft as a night-fighter, a target-tug or an air-sea-rescue aircraft is not within the scope of this book. The first four pages describe the concept, prototype development and tardy service introduction of the fighter ; intended to supplement the eight-gun Spitfire & Hurricanes of Fighter Command. The basic airframe of the Defiant was good - but lacking fixed forward-firing armament and when fitted with the turret - it could fulfil neither the expectations of the designers nor those of the RAF when flown under the combat conditions prevailing in the summer and autumn of 1940. In the usual 'Allied Wings' style units and their operational histories are described in sequence. Twenty pages cover the ops flown as daylight fighter units by 264 and 141 Squadrons. A further page of text lists the second-line units which flew the Defiant during 1940 and is followed by the operational diary listing sortie totals of both Squadrons. Tables, maps & listings in the by now recognizable 'Allied Wings' pastel background style present ; the UK bases flown from ; claims list of both units for May to-August 1940 ; aircraft lost on operations with crew details, aircraft lost by accident ; individual airframe service from being taken on and being struck off Squadron service during the period and the Roll of Honour of all aircrew killed up to 31st August 1940. Richly illustrated the reader will find forty interesting b/w photographs - many of which showing crashes & wreckage in the Netherlands which will probably be new to readers in other countries. Four pages of colour artwork by Malcolm Laird present three side-profiles and varieties of fuselage roundel.   As New

The Mikoyan-Gurevitch MiG-21 Fishbed (1955-2010)
Paloque, Gerard
ISBN: 9782352501473
Histoire & Collection  2009
Soft Cover New book, 98 pages. The MiG-21 originated with an official request from the Soviet authorities in 1954 for a light, high-performance (Mach 2 at 20,000m) frontline fighter to protect military and production installations from potential raids by American bombers. Built for almost half a century in twenty or so different versions, in four successive generations, the Fishbed (its NATO codename) was not only the jet which was built in the largest numbers in the whole of aviation history, but also the aircraft which was built in the greatest numbers since the end of the Second World War, all types and all countries included. Used by fifty or so air forces on four of the five continents, the MiG-21 took part in most of the major conflicts during the four last decades, from the Six-Day War in 1967 to the Balkans in 1999. At the present time more than a thousand examples of this fighter, of which a large number were built in China (Shenyang F-7 and J-7) are still in service, with their career continuing thanks to modernisation programmes for the surviving aircraft which have enabled them to pass cheerfully into the 21st Century.  As New

Bell Uh-1 Huey ’Slicks’ 1962-1975
Bishop, Chris
ISBN: 1841766321
Osprey Pub Co University Park, Illinois, U.S.A. 2003
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG087. The US Army requirement for a light utility helicopter was formulated after the Korean War. Bell's Model 204 design won a competition in 1955, and was given the military designation H-40, later renamed the HU-1 Iroquois. The original design called for a helicopter that could be used for transport, airborne battlefield command and control, medical evacuation, fire support co-ordination and search and rescue. Later its missions would be expanded to include troop insertion/extraction, armed escort and special operations. This title details all the technological background behind the development and use of the Huey 'Slick' in Vietnam, as well as covering all the major uses that this transport aircraft was put to. Victory Air Displays: Prague 1946 & 1947
Kloucek, Pavel; Kudlicka, Bohumir
ISBN: 9788361421429
Mushroom Model Publications  2011
Soft Cover New book, 88 pages. In September 1946, the Union of Pilots of the Czechoslovak Republic held an International Air Show at Prague-Ruzyne airport. Redolent of the country’s splendid pre-war Military Air Days, the 1946 show attracted more than half a million visitors, while military aircraft from Britain, France and the USA joined local civilian and military machines in the air and on the ground. Flying displays featuring thrilling aerobatics, massed Spitfire flypasts, Neville Duke’s stunning Meteor routine and even a B-29 Superfortress wowed the crowd, while the re-emerging Czech aero industry revealed its latest machines - new, indigenous designs, as well as those based on German aircraft - to an adoring press and public. The Czech National Aeroclub attempted to repeat the success of 1946 with its Civilian Sporting Air Day the following July, but without the cooperation of Ruzyne airport, the event did little more than dampen public enthusiasm for the Second International Air Show in September. Nevertheless, the autumn event drew even greater support from the Americans and the British, boasting no fewer than four types of jet fighter - Avia S-92 (Me 262), de Havilland Vampire, Gloster Meteor and Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star - as well as a rocket-assisted S-99 (Bf 109) take off! Perhaps more importantly, it provided one last stage for Czechoslovakia’s proud pilots, most of them ex-RAF, before the ravages of the communist regime forced many to leave and the remainder into persecution. A fascinating and unusual glimpse of the aviation scene in Eastern Europe before the Iron Curtain came down, and some rare photos of major aircraft of the period.   As New

Vought F-8 Crusader - 1955-1999
Paloque, Gerard
ISBN: 9782352501855
Histoire & Collection  2011
Soft Cover New book, 82 pages. When it built the Crusader, the US Navy’s first supersonic aircraft, Vought repeated the success it had had with the legendary WWII fighter, the F4U Corsair. 1250 examples were built. This fighter with its unusual variable incidence wing, made its maiden flight in March 1955 and equipped more than seventy Navy and Marine Corps squadrons during its thirty year career. Used in combat as early as the autumn of 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis, the Crusader distinguished itself during the first part of the Vietnam War in which it scored eighteen confirmed kills, more than half of the US Navy’s total of kills for the whole of the conflict, earning it the unofficial title of 'MiG-Master'. Replaced gradually by more effective fighters like the F-4 Phantom II and the F-14 Tomcat, the Crusader, nicknamed the 'Last Gunfighter' finished its career in the United States in the Reserve units or specialising in photographic reconnaissance at the end of the eighties. France, the only export client except for the Philippines, had Crusaders specially designed to operate from its small aircraft carriers, and the Aeronavale’s last 'Crouze', and thereby the last F-8 in the world, was withdrawn from service in October 1999.  As New

SPA124 Lafayette Escadrille: American Volunteer Airmen in World War 1
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781841767529
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU17. This book tells the story of one of World War I’s most famous squadrons, Spa. 124 - the only French squadron made up entirely of American volunteers (save for the commander and executive officer.) Organised in April 1916, the group was successively dubbed the Escadrille Americaine, Escadrille des Volontaires and finally the Escadrille Lafayette. Its achievements were modest, but it included several colourful characters who captured the public imagination and played a major role in gaining American sympathy for the Allied cause. When the United States finally entered the war, many Lafayette veterans helped prepare US Army Air Service and Navy pilots for combat, although a few chose to stay on with the French. Contents: Origins of N.124 (Formation and early operations), Verdun and the Somme (Major actions and the adoption of the sobriquet 'Lafayette'), Lafayette becomes famous (Spad VIIs and operations through February 18, 1918), Split Metamorphosis (Summaries of the 103rd Aero Squadron and Spa.124), Escadrilles and Commanders of GC.12.  As New

Richthofen’s Circus: Jagdgeschwader Nr 1
VanWyngarden, Greg
ISBN: 9781841767260
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU16. Undoubtedly the most famous of any nation’s aviation units in World War 1 was the legendary Jagdgeschwader Nr 1, or ‘The Flying Circus’ as its respectful foes labelled it. Germany’s first true fighter wing, it would always be associated with its first commander, the charismatic and revered Manfred von Richthofen. JG 1 was formed in July 1917, and for sixteen months the unit’s young pilots in their colourful aircraft battled for aerial dominance of the Western Front. From its ranks emerged many of Germany’s most successful airmen, including the Red Baron’s brother Lothar; Ernst Udet; Werner Voss; Erich Löwenhardt and Hermann Göring. This book charts the World War I experiences of JG 1. Contents: Origins (the early careers of JG I’s Jastas and formation of the Geschwader), Summer Successes (JG I’s operations in the 3rd Battle of Ypres, July - September 1917), Triplane Trials (operations primarily with the Fokker Dr I through the Battle of Cambrai, October 1917 - February 1918), The ‘Kaiser’s Battle’ (operations during ‘Operation Michael,’ the last great German offensive of March - May 1918), New Leaders, New Equipment, Fighting Retreat, Jagdstaffel and Geschwader Commanders of JG I, Aces’ listing.  As New

No 56 Sqn RAF/RFC
Revell, Alex
ISBN: 9781846034282
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU33. By the autumn of 1916, with the formation of the new Jagdstaffeln, the pendulum of aerial supremacy had once again swung in favour of the German Air Force. The battle of the Somme in 1916 saw the RFC suffer losses of nearly 400 aircrew between September and November, and British casualties were to reach a zenith in the ‘Bloody April’ of 1917 when 319 aircrew were lost, killed or taken prisoner of war. This was the situation when No 56 Squadron arrived in France at the end of April 1917. Equipped with the superb new SE 5, it was the first fighter squadron of the RFC to be able to meet the Albatros and Halberstadt fighters of the Jagdstaffeln on equal terms. The squadron’s pilots won an incredible tally of decorations, and by the end of the hostilities many famous fighter pilots had passed through its ranks - Albert Ball VC, Canadian Hank Burden and American Robert Caldwell to name but a few. In this study, Alex Revell uncovers the early days and development of No 56 Squadron, its victories and losses, and the birth of a proud tradition. Contents: Prologue, September 1917, 1 - Early days; 2 - In France; 3 - First successes and casualties; 4 - Summer and Autumn of 1917 - the golden age of air fighting; 5 - The battles of Cambrai and Kaiserschlacht; 6 - New Blood - the summer and autumn of 1918; 7 - The end of the long struggle, Appendices.  As New

Jagdgeschwader 400: Germany’s Elite Rocket Fighters
Ransom, Steven; Hans-Hermann Cammann
ISBN: 9781846039751
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU37. The Jagdgeschwader 400 group was formed for the sole purpose of flying one of the world's most revolutionary aircraft - the rocket-powered Me 163. Although the Me 163 scored relatively few kills, giving it a success rate much lower than the Me 262, it still had a massive psychological impact upon the Allies, and the technology and experiences gained in the Me 163 went on to influence the jet fighters of modern times. The introduction of jet-powered aircraft demanded massive changes in training, equipment, servicing and tactics, all of which are described and examined in this essential analysis of the story of the Me 163 in frontline service with Erprobungskommando 16 and Jagdgeschwader 400.  As New

Jasta 18 - The Red Noses
VanWyngarden, Greg
ISBN: 9781849083355
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU040. The history of Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel (or Jasta) 18 is one of the more unique and complex of German fighter squadrons of World War I. In fact, the unit could be said to have had something of a split personality. Formed in Flanders at the end of October 1916, the Jasta was first commanded by Oblt von Grieffenhagen, who led it to 35 victories in nine months. In August 1917, the aggressive and demanding Oblt Rudolf Berthold took over the Staffel and brought a cadre of seasoned pilots with him from his former command. Berthold molded his new unit into a dedicated group of hunters, and left his stamp on the unit with a striking color scheme of red-nosed Pfalz and Albatros fighters with dark blue fuselage and tail surfaces. This book tells the complete story of the unit: its victories, defeats, and the great aces who flew the red-nosed fighters.  As New

Jagdgeschwader 52: The Experten
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781841767864
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU015. Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) was the most successful and highest-scoring fighter unit, not just in Germany’s World War 2 Luftwaffe, but in the entire annals of aviation history. No other fighter group has ever come close to matching its staggering total of around 9000 enemy aircraft shot down in combat. And yet, because much of that combat took place over the tractless wastes of the Russian front, very little has been written in English about the exploits of this charismatic unit. This book provides a full combat history of JG 52 and its members, including the three top-scoring aces of all time, who claimed a total of 900 victories between them.   As New

Sopwith Camel vs Fokker Dr I: Western Front 1917-18
Guttman, Jon;
ISBN: 9781846032936
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE07. Amid the continuous struggle for aerial superiority during World War 1, two aircraft types were at the forefront. Both rotary-engined fighters, the Sopwith Camel and the Fokker Dr I triplane were relatively slow for their time, but were regarded as the most maneuverable machines produced during the conflict, and the classic pair for a tight, evenly matched dogfight at close quarters. In this book Jon Guttman examines the fascinating story of the design and development of these deadly foes. First-hand accounts and innovative cockpit-view artwork give a thrilling insight into the pilots' experiences during the world's first aerial duels and explain their successes and failures.   As New

MiG-3 Aces of World War 2
Khazanov, Dimtriy
ISBN: 9781849084420
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE102. Created by ex-Polikarpov designers Ivanovic Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich, the MiG-1/3 family of fighters was built to satisfy a Soviet Air Force requirement for an advanced, fast, high altitude fighter. Entering service in the spring of 1941, the problematic MiG-1 had its handling problems rectified with the hasty production of the MiG-3 - the latter had its Mikulin engine moved further forward, increased outer wing dihedral and a strengthened fuselage. As of 22 June 1941, Air Force manoeuvre units in the five borderline military districts could field 917 MiG-3s. Many of these were destroyed on the ground when the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa. Nevertheless, enough examples survived to allow pilots such as Stepan Suprun (Twice Hero of the Soviet Union), Aleksandr Pokryshkin (Thrice Hero of the Soviet Union) and Lev Shestakov (Hero of the Soviet Union) to claim a number of victories on the type. Early successes by units such as 23rd and 28th IAPs resulted in 35 aerial victories being claimed by MiG-3 pilots in the first eight days of the Great Patriotic War. Other units enjoyed similar levels of success, with MiG-3-equipped 15 and 31st IAP proving themselves to be the most combat-ready fighter units on the Northwestern Front. By the end of 1941, a handful of pilots had 'made ace' flying the MiG-3, despite the Soviet air forces having taken a fearful beating at the hands of the Luftwaffe. In 1942 MiG pilots actively participated in the defence of Leningrad, Moscow, Odessa, Kiev and Sevastopol, with still more aviators becoming aces as the year progressed. Amongst them was Aleksandr Pokryshkin, the second-highest scoring Russian ace with 59 victories to his name. He claimed his first five kills while flying a MiG-3 with 55th IAP. Stalin terminated MiG-3 production in October 1941, although the fighter remained in frontline service in large numbers until mid-1942. Surviving examples continued to serve with national air defence regiments until 1943.   As New

Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU004. Finland's premier fighter squadron during World War 2, Lentolaivue 24 (Flying Squadron 24) first saw action during the bloody Winter War of 1939-40, when the Soviet Red Army launched a surprise attack on the small Scandinavian country - the squadron enjoyed great success against numerically superior opposition. LLv 24 was once again in the thick of the action following the outbreak of the Continuation War in June 1941. Easily the air force's most successful fighter unit, LLv 24 claimed 877 kills, and its pilots won five direct and two indirect Mannerheim Crosses (Finland¹s highest military award) out of a total of 19 presented to all Finnish soldiers. Most top aces also scored the bulk of their kills flying with this unit.   As New

Jagdgeschwader 51 ’Molders’
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781846030451
Osprey Pub Co  2006
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU022. JG 51 is one of the Luftwaffe's top wartime fighter units whose story has never been told in English. The unit's history encapsulates the fortunes of the Luftwaffe's fighter arm as a whole: the heady successes of the early months, the steady attrition and the growing strength of the opposition during the mid-war years, and the final chaos and collapse of the last days. The story works on other levels too: the diversity of aircraft types flown - biplanes, Messerschmitt and Focke-Wulf fighters, and even twin-engined ground-attack machines - provides for an interesting mix of hitherto unpublished images; and the wide range of markings and unit badges add colorful variety and are a bonus for the modeling fraternity. But it is, above all, the quality of the pilots who served with JG 51 that sets it apart. Through the war it numbered more Knight's Cross winners among its ranks than any other unit, and it is their stories, their successes, exploits and eventual fates, which brings this history to life.   As New

332nd Fighter Group - Tuskegee Airmen
Bucholtz, Chris
ISBN: 9781846030444
Osprey Pub Co  2007
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU024. The USAAC's Tuskegee Experiment, designed to prove that African-Americans were not capable of flying combat aircraft, ironically resulted in the creation of one of the USAAF's elite units. Crewed by highly-educated and exceptionally motivated men, the 99th Fighter Squadron, led by Col Benjamin O. Davis (later joined by the 100th, 301st, and 302nd FS to form the 332nd Fighter Group), first flew ground attack missions in P-40s in North Africa and participated in the destruction and surrender of Pantelleria, off Sicily. Later, after the unit was equipped with P-51 Mustangs, the 'Redtails' began flying escort missions deep into Germany. The unit scoreboard boasted 111 aerial kills (including several Me 262 jets), 150 strafing victories, 950 vehicles and railway rolling stock destroyed, and the sinking of a German destroyer by war's end. The group were both feared and respected by the Germans, who called them the "Schwartze Voglemenschen" (Black Birdmen), and revered by others as the "Black Red-tail Angels", partly because of their distinct red-tailed aircraft, and partly because they never lost a bomber under escort to enemy attack (a feat which was unmatched by any other USAAF fighter group in World War II). The pilots of the 332nd FG attribute their success to the discipline instilled by Col Davis, who is reputed to have told them, 'If you lose a bomber, don't bother to come back.' This book will reveal the true story of the unit who rose above discrimination to achieve elite status.   As New

479th Fighter Group: Riddle’s Raiders
Stanaway, John
ISBN: 9781846034206
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU032. Formed in October 1943 as part of the last group of fighter units to be sent into combat in northern Europe and the Pacific, the 479th FG wrote for itself an impressive history whilst flying against the Luftwaffe from RAF Wattisham in rural Suffolk. Despite the group's P-38s not being highly regarded in the Eighth Air Force due to their unsuitability for high-altitude combat, the 479th's pilots had a fierce pride of arms. Their fighting spirit, which saw the group destroy hundreds of German aircraft, earned the 479th a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation in the late summer of 1944. The 479th transitioned to the P-51 Mustang in the autumn of 1944, and by VE-Day, some 29 aces had been created by the group, which had claimed more than 430 kills.  As New

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Aces of the Western Front
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781855325951
Osprey Pub Co  1995
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE009. The Fw 190 was the scourge of Fighter Command from the moment it appeared on the Western Front at Abbeville in August 1941 with II./JG 26. A nimble, speedy and well-armed adversary, the 'Butcher Bird' quickly proved superior to all Allied fighters of the time, particulary at medium to low altitude. Led by Experten of the calibre of 'Pips' Priller, Heinz Bar and Walter Oesau, the handful of Fw 190-equipped Jagdgeschwader flew against overwhelming odds, firstly on the Channel coast, and then in direct defence on the Reich when the Jagdflieger took on the might of the USAAF's Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. P-38 Lightning Aces of the 82nd Fighter Group
Blake, Steve
ISBN: 9781849087438
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE108. When the 82nd Fighter Group was organized in March 1942, most of its initial pilot cadre was comprised of newly graduated staff sergeant pilots of Class 42-C - enlisted men! They learned to fly the P-38 at Muroc, in California's Mojave Desert, and then moved to the Los Angeles area to continue their training and to serve as part of its air defence. In September 1942 the group was transported to the East Coast, from where it shipped out to Ireland on the Queen Mary. By this time all its remaining sergeant pilots had been commissioned. As of VE-Day the 82nd Fighter Group's score of confirmed aerial victories stood at 548 aircraft shot down, plus a huge amount of enemy materiel - including aircraft - destroyed on the ground and the sea. It had been awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations. The cost of this success was high, however, for around 250 of the group's pilots had either been killed in action or captured.  As New

Flying hopelessly outmoded P.11 fighters in defence of their country in September 1939, a handful of aviators inflicted serious losses on the Luftwaffe before being overwhelmed. The survivors escaped to then neutral Hungary and Romania, before being ordered to France by the new C-in-C of exiled Polish Armed Forces, General Sikorski. With the invasion of Western Europe in May 1940, the surviving pilots were once more thrust into desperate action in newly-formed Polish units.  As New

Finnish Aces of World War 2
Stenman, Kari
ISBN: 9781855327832
Osprey Pub Co  1999
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE023. Always outnumbered by their Soviet counterparts, the small band of Finnish fighter pilots who defended their Scandinavian homeland from the 'communist hordes' in three separate wars between 1939 and 1945 amassed scores only bettered by the Luftwaffe's Jagdflieger. Initially equipped with a motley collection of biplane and monoplane fighters garnered from sources across the globe, the Finnish Air Force was thrust into combat in November 1939. Given little chance against the massive Soviet force, the Finnish fighter pilots confounded the sceptics and decimated the attacking fighter and bomber formations, prompting the Russians to call a halt in March 1940. This scenario was repeated in 1941, and by 1943 the Finns had become uneasy allies with the Germans. Complete with first-hand accounts and detailed colour illustrations, this book profiles aces like Juutilainen and Wind, who proved unbeatable in the final months of conflict.  As New

Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstorer Aces of World War 2
Weal, John

Osprey Pub Co  1999
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE025. This volume is the first of its type to be devoted exclusively to the Zerstorer day fighter aces, spanning the war years from Poland to the defence of the Reich. Although Messerschmitt's single-engined Bf 109 has received most of the plaudits for achieving virtual air superiority over Europe in 1939-40, the exploits of the manufacturer's twin-engined Bf 110, the Ju 88 and the Me 410 Zerstorer in the first year of the war also make for very impressive reading. Indeed, on the eve of World War 2 a posting to a Bf 110 unit was considered to be the best career move available in the Luftwaffe.  As New

French Aces of World War 2
Ketley, Barry
ISBN: 9781855328983
Osprey Pub Co  1999
Soft Cover New book, 112 pages, ACE028. French pilots endured fighting both with and against the Allies during World War 2. Possessing obsolescent aircraft at the outbreak of the war, the Armée de l'Air was decimated in the wake of the Blitzkrieg; however, a number of fighter units still achieved creditable scores flying Curtiss Hawks, Morane MS.406s and Dewoitine D.520s. Following the capitulation of France at the end of June 1940, many aces continued to fly with the now Vichy French Squadrons that were stationed in North Africa, and a number of these pilots subsequently saw action against their former Allies there. Numerous French pilots also escaped to Britain, and a handful achieved notable sucess with the RAF flying Hurricanes, Spitfires and Tempests. In Russia, the formation of the French-manned 'Normandie-Niemen' regiment in 1943 also saw near on 40 pilots achieve ace status flying Yak fighters on the Eastern Front.  As New

Bf 109 Aces of the Russian Front
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781841760841
Osprey Pub Co  2001
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE037. The highest scoring aces of any aerial conflict were the Luftwaffe pilots involved in the bloody combats on the Russian Front. The most common fighter used by these pilots was the Bf 109, which was involved in the action from Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, through to the doomed Defence of the Reich in 1945. Units like JGs 5, 52 and 54 all flew the Messerschmitt fighter, progressing from Emil to Gustav variants. This volume includes all the high-scoring aces, and explains just how difficult a job the Jagdwaffe faced on the Russian Front, and how its experts achieved such overwhelming scores.  As New

Messerschmitt BF 109 G and K
Braas, Nico; Bradic, Srecko
Lanasta  2012
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, 50 photos, 54 colour profiles, 82 drawings. When the Messerschmitt design team headed by Walter Rethel started in 1934 with the work on a new fighter for the luftwaffe, this work resulted in a fighter aircraft that gained the same fame as the British Spitfire. The new fighter type became known as the Me-109 (or Bf-109 where Bf stood for the original name Bayerische Flugzeugwerke). Production started in 1937 and continued until the end of the war. However the latest ME-109 versions had little in common with the first versions. DH 2 vs Albatros D I/D II: Western Front 1916
Miller, James
ISBN: 9781849087049
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE42. The advent and deployment of the Royal Flying Corps' Airco DH 2 in 1916 effectively eliminated the 'scourge' of aerial dominance enjoyed by the Fokker Eindecker monoplanes. Spearheaded by No 24 Sqn and led by Victoria Cross recipient Lanoe Hawker, the ungainly yet nimble DH 2 - with its rotary engine 'pusher' configuration affording excellent visibility and eliminating the need for a synchronised machine gun - had wrested air superiority from the Germans by the spring and then maintained it through the Battle of the Somme that summer. However, by autumn German reorganisation had seen the birth of the Jagdstaffel and arrival of the new Albatros D II, a sleek inline-engined machine built for speed and twin-gun firepower. Thus, for the remainder of the year an epic struggle for aerial superiority raged above the horrors of the Somme battlefields, pitting the manoeuvrable yet under-gunned DH 2s - which were also plagued by sundry engine malfunctions - against the less nimble yet better armed and faster Albatros D IIs. In the end the Germans would regain air superiority, three squadron commanders - two of whom were considered pinnacles of their respective air forces - would lose their lives, and an up-and-coming pilot (Manfred von Richthofen) would triumph in a legendary dogfight and attain unimagined heights fighting with tactics learned from a fallen mentor.   As New

Austro-Hungarian Albatros Aces of World War 1
Varriale, Paolo
ISBN: 9781849087476
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE110. Austro-Hungarian industry produced a series of poor fighter types such as the Phonix D I and Hansa-Brandenburg D I during the early stages of the war, and it was not until licence-built examples of the battle-proven Albatros and D II and D III began to reach Fliegerkompagnien, or Fliks, in May 1917 that the fortunes of pilots began to look up. Unlike the German-built Albatrosen, the Oeffag aircraft were far more robust than German D IIs and D IIIs. They also displayed superior speed, climb, manoeuvrability and infinitely safer flight characteristics. The careful cross-checking of Allied sources with Austrian and German records form the basis for a detailed reconstruction of the dogfights fought by the leading aces. It will also chart the careers of the Austro-Hungarian aces that flew the D II and D III, their successes and their defeats, with additional information about their personal background and their post-war lives in the nations born from the collapse of the Hapsburg Empire.  As New

Mil Mi-24 Hind Gunship
Miladenov, Alexander
ISBN: 9781846039539
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG171. With its distinctive double-cockpit design, the Mi-24 'Hind' is arguably the most recognizable war machine of the Cold War, and has achieved near-legendary status in the annals of military history. The first Soviet helicopter to function as both a gunship and an assault transport, it served extensively in Afghanistan, and is now employed by militaries across the world. Written by an expert on the 'Hind', and drawing on manufacturing and military sources, this book presents the Mi-24 in all of its brutal glory, from design and development to deployment and combat. Also included are a number of color plates showing the distinct paint schemes employed by various nations in a range of theaters and for different armies.  As New

Italian Aces of World War 1
Varriale, Paolo
ISBN: 9781846034268
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 104 pages, ACE89. The Italian aces of World War One have gone down in history as the irrefutable masters of the skies in the battle against their Austro-Hungarian enemies. In this often forgotten theatre of warfare these remarkable pilots gave the Italian forces an undisputed air superiority and left an enduring legacy as extraordinary men. Having interviewed the descendants of almost every Italian ace from the Great War, Paolo Varriale uncovers these fighters’ incredible and sometimes tragic histories. Years of painstaking research has culminated in this truly groundbreaking study which brings to life the exploits of such famous aces as Baracca, Ruffo and Piccio, and the lesser known Riva, Sabelli and Nardini. Letters, diaries and unpublished photographs shed light on previously unknown personal and unit insignia, exposing many myths and making this a commanding addition to the aviation history of World War One. Contents: Introduction, Chapter 1 - Italian fighters at War, Chapter 2 - Italian rules for victory confirmation, Chapter 3 - Biographies of the Aces, Appendices.  As New

P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Ninth and Fifteenth Air Forces
Scutts, Jerry
ISBN: 9781855329065
Osprey Pub Co  2000
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE030. This book charts the story of the lesser known aces who flew the mighty Republic aircraft as a tactical fighter-bomber with the Ninth Air Force, rather than as a long-range escort. It also details the exploits of the Mediterranean-based 325th FG, which was the only P-47 group within the strategic Fifteenth Air Force. Thunderbolt aces within the Ninth Air Force, particularly, were rare, despite some 15 groups flying the fighter. Supporting troops on the ground rather than searching out aerial foes, was the name of the game for the men of the Ninth. However, with the Luftwaffe often opposing such sorties through to April 1945, more than 20 pilots had the opportunity to score five or more kills and 'make ace'.  As New

4th Fighter Group - Debden Eagles
Bucholtz, Chris
ISBN: 9781846033216
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU030. Formed around a nucleus of pilots already seasoned by their experience as volunteers in the RAF's Eagle Squadrons, the 4th Fighter Group was established in England in October 1942. Initially flying Spitfires, the Debden Eagles went on to fly the P-47 and P-51, becoming in July 1943, the first Eighth Air Force fighter group to penetrate German air space. The group's record of 583 air and 469 ground victories was unmatched in the Eighth Air Force, and the group produced a cast of characters that included legendary aces Don Blakeslee, Pierce McKennon, 'Kid' Hofer, Duane Beeson, Steve Pisanos and Howard Hively. While primarily a bomber escort group, the 4th also played roles in supporting the D-Day landings, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine. The group's achievements came at a price, however, for 248 aircraft were lost in combat, with 125 pilots killed in action and 105 being taken prisoner - a 42 percent casualty rate. Packed with first hand accounts, detailed aircraft profiles and full combat histories, this book is an intriguing insight into the best-known American fighter unit in World War 2.

American Nightfighter Aces of World War 2
Thomas, Andrew; Thompson, Warren
ISBN: 9781846033063
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE84. The Americans lagged behind their European contemporaries in military aviation in the late 1930s, and it took the Battle of Britain to awaken America to the necessity of having aircraft that could defend targets against night-time attack by bomber aircraft. This book examines the numerous aircraft types that were used by the US in this role, beginning with the early stop-gap conversions like the TBM Avenger, Lockheed Ventura and the A-20 Havoc (P-70). It goes on to detail the combat history of the newer, radar-equipped Hellcats, Corsairs and Black Widows that were designed to seek out enemy aircraft and which registered most of the kills made by the Navy, Marine Corps and USAAF in 1944-45. With full-colour profiles and rare photographs, this is an absorbing account of an underestimated flying force: the American Nightfighters. Contents: Chapter 1: Building the Nightfighter Programme, Chapter 2: Yanks in the RAF, Chapter 3: Pacific War Operations, Chapter 4: MTO Operations, Chapter 5: Black Widow in the ETO, Appendices.  As New

La-5/7 vs Fw 190: Eastern Front 1942-45
Khazanov, Dimtriy
ISBN: 9781849084734
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE39. Soviet fighter aviation suffered terribly at the hands of the Jagdwaffe in the first year of the war in the east, and with the arrival of JG 51 and its Fw 190s on the Stalingrad Front in September 1942 things only got worse for the hard-pressed Red Army Air Force pilots. However, help was on its way in the form of the re-engined LaGG-3 fighter, which was fitted with a powerful air-cooled M-82 radial engine. Designated the La-5, the new fighter was capable of withstanding more punishment than the fragile LaGG-3, and it was also appreciably faster and had a greater rate of climb. It was more of a handful to fly, however, but the new generation of better trained pilots who were led into combat by the survivors of 1941-42 quickly found the La-5 (and, later, the improved La-7) very much to their liking. Arriving in the frontline in August 1942, the new Lavochkin fighters soon found themselves pitted into action on the Central Sector against the equally new Fw 190As of JG 51. The first clashes took place in November of that year, and from then on the Focke-Wulf fighter would regularly clash with its counterpart from Lavochkin.  As New

Naval Aces of World War 1 part 2
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781849086646
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE104. Part 2 of Naval Aces looks at the many flying Naval heroes who flew alongside or against those of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). While the RNAS operated its own formidable arsenal of Nieuport and Sopwith scouts over the Flanders coast, the German navy countered with its own Land Feld Jagdstaffeln and Seefront Staffeln. In addition, German floatplane units, most notably at Zeebrugge, produced at least three aces of their own at the expense of British flying boats, airships and other patrol craft. Unique to World War 1 was the use of flying boats as fighters in combat, which figured at least partially in the scores of Russian aces Aleksandr de Seversky and Mikhail Safanov. Austrian ace Gottfried Banfield scored all nine of his victories in flying boats and Friedrich Lang claimed two of his total of five in one. The best flying boat fighter, however, was Italy's Macchi M 5, flown by three aces and also the mount of Charles H Hammann, the first American to earn the Medal of Honor in aerial combat. Also unique were the sole US Navy ace, David Ingalls, who scored his six victories while attached to No 213 Sqn RAF, and Greek ace Artitides Moraitinis, credited with nine victories over Salonika and the Dardanelles.   As New

US Marine Corps F-4 Phantom II Units of the Vietnam War
Davies, Peter
ISBN: 9781849087513
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM94. Twenty-five US Marine Corps squadrons flew versions of the Phantom II and 11 of them used the aircraft in South-East Asia from May 1965 through to early 1973. Rather than the air-to-air missiles that were the main component in the original F-4 armament, these aircraft carried an ever-expanding range of weaponry. Some toted 24,500-lb bombs and others strafed with up to three 20 mm gun pods, while most flew daily sorties delivering napalm, Snakeye bombs and big Zuni rockets. Many US Marines holding small outpost positions in Laos and South Vietnam against heavy Viet Cong attack owed their lives to the Phantom II pilots who repeatedly drove off the enemy. The book will examine these missions in the context of US Marine Corps close-support doctrine, using the direct experience of a selection of the aircrew who flew and organised those missions.   As New

No 60 Sqn RFC/RAF
Revell, Alex
ISBN: 9781849083331
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU041. When No 60 Sqn arrived in France in May 1916, partially equipped with the delightfully named Morane Bullet, there were only two dedicated single-seat fighter squadrons on the Western Front. Operating initially as a utility unit, No 60 Sqn's duties were mixed - reconnaissance, fighter patrols and escorts (by one Flight), as well as the landing of spies behind the enemy lines. In the opening weeks of the battles of the Somme in the summer of 1916, the squadron suffered heavy casualties. Its Commanding Officer complained to General Trenchard that this was mainly due to inadequately trained pilots and inferior aircraft. Trenchard withdrew the squadron from frontline duties. During its enforced rest and re-equipment, the observers were posted out, the squadron was re-equipped with Nieuport scouts, and individual pilots, who had shown promise as fighter pilots while flying the few single-seater scouts issued to the two-seater unit, were posted to No 60 Sqn. Chief amongst these was Capt Albert Ball MC who had already claimed 11 victories with No 11 Sqn. During his time with No 60 Sqn, Ball added another 20 victories and was awarded a DSO and Bar. After his death in May 1917, he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. With its return to active operations, equipped with the Nieuport, and later the SE 5 and SE 5a, No 60 Sqn rapidly became one of the most successful fighter units of the RFC. Many famous and high scoring pilots were to go through its ranks - Billy Bishop VC, Grid Caldwell, Willie Fry, 'Duke' Meintjes, S F Vincent, J E Doyle, S B Horn, R Chidlaw-Roberts and A W Saunders, to name but a few - and it finished the war with more 320 victories.   As New

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XII
Listemann, Phil H.
ISBN: 9782952638142
Philedition France 2007
Soft Cover New book, 46 pages, 40 photos, 4 colour aircraft profiles. Despite a short production run of only 100 airframes, the Mk. 12 was however a "key player" in the Spitfire’s history, it being the first production mark to be fitted with the R.R. Griffon motor. The Mk. XII would dissipate the spells of Merlin and all subsequent Spitfire marks up to the final Mk. XIV would be powered by Griffons. The author describes the introduction and service history of the type with the two RAF squadrons which operated it, Nos 41 & 91 (Nigeria) Squadrons . The former between April 1943 and October 1944, whereas 91 Squadron, which became operational on type during June 1943, was to relinquish it earlier in favour of the Mk. XIV during early 1944. Although seen by both Supermarine and the RAF as an interim version, the Spitfire Mk XII when flown by the two Squadrons - managed to establish itself as a worthy opponent to the Luftwaffe as well as to both the Wehrmacht and Reichsbahn. Fw190s, Ju88s, trucks, trains, armoured vehicles, an unfortunate balloon and eventually V1s would all fall prey to the roaming Spitfire XIIs of 41 and 91 Squadrons. In the first half of the booklet, the author outlines the operations flown by both squadrons, first 41 and then 91, listing missions with victories attained and losses sustained. Numerous photographs show aircraft being flown by both units. The second half of the book is given over to the operational record, listing and totalling all sorties flown by both squadrons. Then follows a table displaying all the units which flew the Mk XII, during and after it had passed from active service. Of interest is that it was later flown by 595 Squadron to give British Army A/A gunners practice in laying and tracking fast-moving fighters. A map of the UK and a list present all the bases from which the Mk XII flew. Four high quality colour profiles by Malcolm Laird show specific a/c camouflage of aircraft from both operational squadrons. Six pages list the many claims made by pilots. Aircrew of many nationalities flew the Mk XII and alongside pilots from British and Commonwealth nations this mark of Spitfire was also flown by renowned Frenchmen Jacques Andrieux and Jean Maridor, the Belgian V1 killer Maurice Balasse, as well as (inevitably) a Pole, Jerzy Solak and Dutchman Rijklof van Goens : Which all becomes evident when studying the meticulously compiled claims list, wherein a/c flown and accreditation’s are given. Three pages list the total of 57 a/c lost on operations and due to accidents. Four pages cover the service lives of known airframes - the final page is the Roll of Honour - naming the 19 young pilots of six nationalities who made the ultimate sacrifice whilst flying Spitfire Mk XIIs.  As New

Valiant Units of the Cold War
Brooks, Andrew
ISBN: 9781849087537
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM95. The RAF’s first Cold War strategic bomber, the Vickers Valiant, was procured as an insurance measure in case either the Vulcan or Victor was found to have a serious flaw. The Valiant was the equivalent of the US B-47 Stratojet, and it blazed the trail for the British airborne nuclear deterrent as the aircraft enjoyed a far more active service career than later V-bombers. It was the launch platform for all British free fall nuclear weapons tests both in the Pacific and in central Australia, it took part in the Suez campaign in 1956 and it was the only V-bomber to drop (conventional) weapons in anger until the Falklands operation in 1982. The Valiant was modified to serve in the electronic warfare, strategic reconnaissance and airborne tanker role, but it had to be grounded in early 1965 when the aircraft succumbed to metal fatigue.   As New

Meteor I Vs V1 Flying Bomb 1944
Nijboer, Donald
ISBN: 9781849087063
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE45. A total of 10,500 missiles were launched as part of the V1 attack, of which 3,957 were destroyed by the defences. Indeed, it could have been much worse, for by the end of the war the Germans had manufactured close to 32,000 flying bombs. The defences put forward to guard against the V1 were formidable - 23,000 men and women with their guns, radar and communications networks were installed on coastal sites. Squadrons of Britain’s newest Spitfires, the F XIVs, and Hawker Tempest Vs were kept at home to battle the new menace. Rushed into action in July 1944 to help counter the V1 threat, Britain’s Gloster Meteor I was the first jet fighter to enter RAF service. On 4 August the Meteor scored its first V1 victory. Having just closed in on a flying bomb, its officer squeezed the trigger but his guns jammed. Using the Meteor’s superior speed, he was able to overtake the missile and, using his wing tip, he tipped the craft over and sent it crashing into the ground. The interceptions between the V1 and Britain’s Gloster Meteor were historic, and ushered in a new era of aerial combat.   As New

No.310 (Czechoslovak) Squadron 1940-1945: Hurricane, Spitfire
Polak, Tomas; Rajlich, Jiri; Vancata, Pavel
ISBN: 295263811X
Philedition  2008
Soft Cover New book, 98 pages. No.310 (Czechoslovak) Squadron was among the first Squadrons to be formed with foreign volunteers during Summer 1940. Many Czechoslovaks pilots who were fighting with the French decided to escape to the UK to continue the struggle again the Nazis and those pilots were rushed into the Battle of Britain one month after their arrival and a short retraining, despite many problems of tactics and language. After the Battle of Britain, this unit continued to operate against the German and performed well until the War’s end, but was always restrained by recruitment problem obliging sometimes to be based far from any German aerial activity to avoid heavy losses. In three parts, history, appendices (comprising all the claims, losses including accidental, awards, maps and the operational diary) and pilot roster, all what it must be known in this unit is told. It is also illustrated by more than 100 photos and colour profiles.  As New

No.312 (Czechoslovak) Squadron, 1940-1945: Hurricane, Spitfire
Polak, Tomas; Rajlich, Jiri
ISBN: 2952638152
Philedition  2008
Soft Cover New book, 98 pages. Information presented within its hundred pages provides a comprehensive account of the activities of 312 Squadron, from its formation in August 1940 until disbanding in February 1946. The squadron flew Hurricanes until late 1941 when the changeover to Spitfires was made, with various marks of which it was equipped until after the cessation of hostilities. 11 excellent colour profiles (4 Hurricanes, 7 Spitfires) present the full variety of aeroplanes flown by 312 Squadron. The colour profiles in this series of books are excellent ; the artist (Malcolm Laird) still thankfully includes old-fashioned ’black lines’ to delineate panels and surfaces. Fussy modellers might care to establish from some of the pan-chromatic photographs (e.g. pages 17, 30, 57) if the small Czech roundel beneath the cockpit was always painted with blue to the front?  As New

As New

Fokker D.XXI Aces of World War 2
Stenman, Kari; Jong, Peter De
ISBN: 9781780960623
Osprey Pub Co  2013
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE112. Entering service with the Dutch air force from early 1938, the aircraft was also built under license in Denmark and Finland. Production was also scheduled to commence in Spain too but Nationalist forces overran the factory before this commenced. The Dutch D.XXIs saw less than a week of action following the German invasion of the west on 10 May 1940, with many of the country's 28 fighters being destroyed on the ground. However, those that survived the initial onslaught inflicted losses on the Luftwaffe, 15 pilots sharing in the destruction of 14 German aircraft (fighters, bombers and transports). By then, however, the D.XXI had found everlasting fame in Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40. Proving itself a real thorn in the side of the Soviets, the fighter, operating in primitive conditions and against vastly superior numbers, Finnish D.XXIs racked up an incredible score against the Red Air Force, and in particular its bomber units. No fewer than ten pilots became aces during this brief, but bloody, campaign, with a similar number claiming four victories and subsequently 'making ace' in later types. The sturdy D.XXI was highly rated by the leading Finnish pilots of the time, boasting a good rate of climb and the ability to break off combat when required thanks to its high speed in a dive. The D.XXI also has the distinction of producing the first 'ace in a single mission' in World War 2, when then 1Lt Jorma Sarvanto shot down six Ilyushin DB-3 bombers on 6 January 1940. After spending a year providing home defence and flying coastal patrols during the early stages of the Continuation War in 1941, all surviving Finnish Fokker D.XXIs were relegated to the reconnaissance role, which they performed through to the end of hostilities in September 1944.  As New

USAF and VNAF A-1 Skyraider Units of the Vietnam War
Hukee, Byron
ISBN: 9781780960685
Osprey Pub Co  2013
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM97. USAF Skyraider units were originally tasked to serve as quasi-training units for the fledgling VNAF. Equipped only with the two-seat models of the Skyraider, American pilots were required to have VNAF 'observers' in the aircraft for every mission. Eventually, this arrangement was changed as enough Vietnamese pilots were trained to man their own squadrons, while USAF squadrons were tasked with close support for US ground forces. Eventually, no fewer than four USAF and seven VNAF Skyraider units saw service in Vietnam. Additionally, one A-1 training squadron flew from Hurlburt Field, Florida, throughout the Vietnam War era. In the ten years that this squadron was active, nearly 1000 USAF and 300 VNAF pilots were trained in the Skyraider. While the core mission of all Skyraider squadrons was Close Air Support (CAS), other missions were accomplished at various times. Among these were Search and Rescue (SAR), night interdiction on the Ho Chi Minh trail, helicopter escort and special forces support to name but a few. Each of these missions took full advantage of the Skyraider's ability to deliver a variety of munitions in close proximity to friendly forces while inflicting heavy casualties on enemy forces.  As New

PE-2 Guards Units of World War 2
Khazanov, Dimtriy
ISBN: 9781780960654
Osprey Pub Co  2013
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM96. Petlyakov's Pe-2 was the most numerous Soviet twin-engined bomber of World War 2, the aircraft being used as a dive-bomber, ground attack platform and dedicated reconnaissance type. The first examples entered service in August 1940, and by the time production came to end in late 1945, no fewer than 10,547 examples had been built. These equipped more than 80 bomber air regiments, and of the latter, two were accorded Guards Air Corps status, as were six air regiments. Amongst the former was the 2nd Guards Bomber Air Corps, which was commanded by the legendary General Polbin, who was twice made a Hero of the Soviet Union. Pe-2 bomber and reconnaissance versions (the latter in service with four Guards reconnaissance air regiments of the Air Force and one regiment of Naval Aviation) were extensively used from the frozen Arctic north to the balmy Crimea front. A number of Pe-2 also saw brief combat against Japan in the final weeks of World War 2.

As New
