These aircraft were the backbone of the Eastern Bloc fighter air forces, while licence manufacture was undertaken in Czechoslovakia. Copies were also produced in China, with further variants coming from this source, equipping many Asian and African air forces. MiG-17 and MiG-19 Units of the Vietnam War
Toperczer, Istvan
ISBN: 9781841761626
Osprey Pub Co  2001
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM25. The erstwhile enemy of the USAF and US Navy during the nine years of American involvement in the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese Peoples' Air Force (VPAF) quickly grew from an ill-organised rabble of poorly trained pilots flying antiquated communist aircraft into a highly effective fighting force that more than held its own over the skies of North Vietnam. Flying Soviet fighters like the MiG-17, and MiG-19, the VPAF produced over a dozen aces, whilst the Americans managed just two pilots and three navigators in the same period. Contents: Establishing the VPAF; Training; MiG-17; MiG-19; MiG-21; Appendices; Full Ace Listing; Confirmed Kill Listing; Commentary on the Colour Profiles.  As New

Huey Cobra Gunships
Bishop, Chris
ISBN: 1841769843
Osprey Publishing Ltd Oxford, United Kingdom 2006
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG125. The Bell Huey Cobra was the very first purpose-designed helicopter gunship to become operational and to see combat. Designed in the mid-1960s as an "interim solution" for an armed escort and close-support weapon to support the US Army in the Vietnam War, it is still being manufactured and improved in the 21st century, making it a success far beyond the wildest dreams of its creators. In this book Chris Bishop discusses the origins of the Huey Cobra, the innovations to its design throughout the years and its major combat uses in numerous theatres, including Vietnam, the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, US Persian Gulf escort operations, Lebanon 1983, Panama 1989, the Gulf War 1991 and in the current conflict in Iraq. RF-8 Crusader Units over Cuba and Vietnam
Mersky, Peter
ISBN: 9781855327825
Osprey Pub Co  1999
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages. COM12. Although the Crusader was built first and foremost as a Navy interceptor, as has often been the tradition with US fighters, a photo-reconnaissance variant was also produced by Vought. The photo-bird's first operational test came in the autumn of 1962 when its overflights of Cuba alerted the world to the likely presence of medium-range ballistic missiles on the Caribbean island. The recce Crusader's next action came during the long years of the Vietnam War. This volume is the second of two in the Combat Aircraft series devoted to the Crusader, the first title (again by Peter Mersky) having covered the F-8 fighter variants, and their MiG-killing exploits, during the Vietnam War. Contents: Introduction - Cuban Crisis - Early Operations in South-East Asia - 1965-68 - Missions and Losses Mount - Getting the Coverage - 1972-75 - The Last Campaigns - Appendices.  As New

Pfalz Scout Aces of World War 1
VanWyngarden, Greg
ISBN: 9781841769981
Osprey Pub Co  2006
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE71. The Pfalz Flugzeug Werke, located at Speyer am Rhein in Bavaria, was the third in the great triumvirate (along with Fokker and Albatros) of German fighter manufacturers in the Great War. When World War I broke out in 1914, Pfalz initially produced copies of the Morane-Saulnier parasol monoplanes for the German air service. With the advent of the famed Fokker Eindeckers with their synchronized machine guns, Pfalz entered the fighter market with the Pfalz E.I and its successors, all monoplanes which were similarly armed. Though never as as numerous as the Albatros or Fokker designs, the D III/IIIa was flown in combat by many well-known aces: Werner Voss, Carl Degelow, Erich Löwenhardt, and the balloon buster Fritz von Röth, among others. This book examines the little-known aircraft flown by these incredible men. Contents: Introduction, The Pfalz Monoplanes, The Pfalz D III Enters Service, A Home-Grown Fighter for Bavaria, The Workhorse, The Pfalz D VIII and D XII.  As New

Sopwith Pup Aces of World War 1
Franks, Norman
ISBN: 9781841768861
Osprey Pub Co  2005
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 81 photos, 20 color profiles, 4 1/48 scale drawings. ACE67. The Sopwith Pup was the forerunner of the hugely successful Sopwith Camel, which duly became the most successful fighter of World War 1. The first proper British fighting scout, the first Pups - the Royal Naval Air Service - arrived on the Western Front in 1916. Although regarded as a ‘nice’ aeroplane to fly, pilots who used it in combat gained much success during the first half of 1917. The Royal Flying Corps also used the Pup from January 1917 onwards, with the final combats with the machine occurring in December of that year. This book describes the combat careers of the successful Pup aces, how they flew and how they fought. Contents: Origins of the Pup, With the RNAS in 1916, RNAS and RC in ‘Bloody April’, Summer 1917, Autumn 1917, Appendices.  As New

Fokker D VII Aces of World War 1: Part 1
Franks, Norman
ISBN: 9781841765334
Osprey Pub Co  2003
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 100+ photos, 61 color profiles, 5 scale drawings. ACE53. Designed in a great rush at the end of 1917 just in time to take part in the German standard fighter competition held in January/February 1918, the D VII easily walked away with first prize. As Germanys premier fighter unit, von Richthofens JG I (led by Hermann Göring in the wake of the 'Red Baron's' recent death) received the first examples of the D VII to reach the frontline in late April. Built to oppose the new generation of French SPAD XIIIs and British SE5a's and Camel fighters, the D VII was arguably the best all-round fighting scout of the Great War.   As New

Osprey Pub Co  2003
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 100+ photos, 52 color profiles, 5 scale drawings. ACE52. Responsible for destroying 1294 enemy aircraft between June 1917 and November 1918, the Camel was the most successful fighting scout employed by either side in terms of the sheer number of victories that it scored. The Camel was renowned for its sensitivity and need for skill and experience, and casualties amongst pilots undergoing training on the type were very high. More than 5490 examples were constructed, and this book covers its combat use on the Western Front, in Palestine, on the Italian front, in the Home Defence role in the UK and in Russia.  As New

SPAD XII/XIII Aces of World War 1
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781841763163
Osprey Pub Co  2002
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 100+ photos, 57 color profiles, 5 scale drawings. ACE47. This book details the exploits of the pilots who flew the hugely successful SPAD XIII and the trickier SPAD XII. Built in response to the combat inadequacies of the SPAD VII, the XIII first entered service with the French Aviation Militaire in late 1917. Despite suffering engine unreliability, the XIII enjoyed great success on the Western Front, where it was flown by numerous French, American, Italian and Belgian aces, including Eddie Rickenbacker, leading US ace of World War I. The SPAD XII, meanwhile, was the product of numerous improvements to the SPAD VII model. Entering service in July 1917, the aircraft boasted a single-shot 37 mm Puteaux cannon, which had to be hand-reloaded in flight! Tricky to fly, the XII was only issued to experienced pilots, and was flown briefly by a number of aces.   As New

Fokker Dr I Aces of World War 1
Franks, Norman
ISBN: 9781841762234
Osprey Pub Co  2001
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 96 photos, 62 color profiles, 10 1/32 scale drawings. ACE40. Undoubtedly the most famous fighter type to see service on either side during World War 1, the Fokker Dr I was a revelation when it entered service on the western front in 1917. Manfred von Richthofen’s JG 1 ‘circus’ was the first Jasta to completely re-equip with the new fighter, and in the skilled hands of its numerous aces the Dr I proved a formidable opponent. The Dr I remained in service on the Western Front until replaced by the superior Fokker D VII in May 1918. Just weeks prior to that, however, Germany’s leading ace, the great ‘Red Baron’, had been killed at the controls of a Dr I.  As New

Nieuport Aces of World War 1
Franks, Norman
ISBN: 9781855329614
Osprey Pub Co  2000
Soft Cover New book, 100 pages, 113 photos, 40 color profiles, 25 1/72 scale drawings. ACE33. The French Nieuport company provided the Allied air forces with the first true fighter scout of World War 1 in the shape of the diminutive XI of 1915. Based on the Bebe racer, built for the abandoned Gordon-Bennett Trophy of the previous year, the aircraft utilised a sesquiplane (lower wing much smaller than the upper wing) arrangement which gave the XI extreme manoeuvrability. It was the only scout respected by the all-conquering German Fokker E-series of 1915-16, and was flown by French, British, Russian, Belgian and Italian aces. The XI was replaced from May 1916 onwards by the bigger and more powerful XVII. which proved to be one of the best fighters of World War 1. MiG-21 Units of the Vietnam War
Toperczer, Istvan
ISBN: 9781841762630
Osprey Pub Co  2001
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM29. Having honed their piloting skills on the subsonic MiG-17 and transonic MiG-19, the Vietnamese Peoples’ Air Force (VPAF) received their first examples of the legendary MiG-21 supersonic fighter in 1966. Soon thrown into combat over North Vietnam, the guided-missile equipped MiG-21 proved a deadly opponent for the USAF, Navy and Marine Corps crews striking at targets deep into communist territory. Most of the VPAF’s 12+ aces scored their bulk of their kills in the MiG-21, which was then the best fighter produced by Russia’s premier fast jet manufacturer, Mikoyan Gurevich. Well over 200 MiG-21s were supplied to the VPAF, and the numerous models and the schemes they wore are chronicled in great detail in this unique volume.  As New

Known to its pilots as the 'last of the gunfighters' due to its quartet of Colt-Browning Mk 12 20 mm cannon, the F-8 Crusader was numerically the most populous fighter in the US Navy at the start of America's involvement in the Vietnam conflict in 1964 - some 482 F-8C/D/Es equipped 17 frontline units. It enjoyed great success against North Vietnamese Mig-17s and Mig-21s during the Rolling Thunder campaign of 1965-68, officially downing 18 jets, which represented 53 per cent of all Mig claims lodged by Navy squadrons during this period. F-86 Sabre Aces of the 4th Fighter Wing
Thompson, Warren
ISBN: 9781841769967
Osprey Publishing Ltd Oxford, United Kingdom 2006
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 86 photos, 65 color photos, 6 1/48 scale diagrams. ACE72. The entry of the United State’s premier jet interceptor into the Korean War was triggered by the ever-increasing presence of the Soviet-built MiG-15 south of the Yalu River. The possibility of the USAF losing air supremacy over the Korean Peninsula was unacceptable. The 4th Fighter Wing got the call for combat in Korea. They were made up of a combination of new pilots right out of jet training and the older combat veterans of World War II vintage. This combination of pilot types wrote and re-wrote the text books on jet warfare. Of the 40 jet aces that the war produced, the 4th Wing boasted 24 of them. This book details these incredible pilots and the planes they flew. Attack Of The Drones: A History Of Unmanned Aerial Combat
Yenne, Bill
ISBN: 0760318255
Zenith Press Osceola, Wisconsin, U.S.A. 2004
Soft Cover New book, 127 pages, 162 photos mostly in colour. Slight shelf wear to cover. On November 4, 2002, an MQ-1B Predator unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) took out an al-Qaeda SUV with an AGM-114 Hellfire air attack missile 100 miles east of the Yemeni capital of San'a. This marked a turning point in military history. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) had taken the offensive, and were now performing as unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). But this attack was not the first use of a UAV in combat. The idea and technology of unmanned aircraft began with vehicles such as the Kettering Bug of World War I, and evolved through the first generation cruise missiles during World War II and the decade following. This book chronicles the evolution of unmanned, remotely piloted reconnaissance aircraft to their modern use in offensive combat operations.  Very Good

Hurricanes outnumbered Spitfires during the Battle of Britain by three to one, and downed more aircraft. From July to October 1940 Fighter Command squadrons claimed 2,475 kills of which 1,393 were downed by Hurricanes.  Soft Cover New book, 64 pages, 64 photos, 24 colour aircraft profiles, 13 scale drawings. Undoubtedly the most versatile German aircraft of World War 2, the Junkers Ju 88 served as a fighter, bomber and patrol aircraft on every front on which the Luftwaffe fought. Blooded in action during the Blitzkrieg, the Ju 88 soon proved to be a formidable opponent for the beleaguered Allied air forces. This book is the first of three volumes which will cover the Ju 88's extensive wartime service in the bomber role, and it details the aircraft's early campaigns, through to its extensive use in the night Blitz of 1940-41. Bf 109D/E Aces of the Blitzkrieg
Weal, John
ISBN: 8483722194
Osprey Aviation/Delprado Spain 1999
Soft Cover New book, 63 pages, 51 photos, 29 colour aircraft profiles, 4 colour uniform illustrations, 9 1/72 scale drawings. The period covered in this volume was considered to be the 'glory years' for the Jagdwaffe - fresh from the experience gained in the Spanish Civil War - and for the Bf 109 in particular. Many famous pilots scored their first kills in the classic dogfights staged over Poland, Western Europe, the Channel and finally southern England. Some 40 Knight's Crosses were awarded in 1940 alone. However, after sweeping all before them in support of the Blitzkrieg across continental Europe, the Bf 109E pilots were to suffer badly during the Battle of Britain, the result of poor tactics inflicted upon them by the Luftwaffe High Command, and their mount's less then generous range.  As New

ISBN: 8483726009
Osprey Aviation/Delprado Spain 2001
Soft Cover New book, 63 pages, 67 photos & maps, 16 colour aircraft profiles. The war fought between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982, for the possession of the Falkland Islands was probably the last 'colonial' war that will ever be undertaken by the British. This book shows how the key to British success was the speed with which the British gained and then maintained air superiority over the islands and the waters around then with their small force of Sea Harrier STOVL warplanes, which operated from two aircraft carriers. Though subsonic, the Sea Harrier and its Sidewinder AAM were a combination altogether superior to Argentina's mix of supersonic and subsonic warplanes with older weapons, and this advantage was emphasised by the significantly greater tactical acuity of the British pilots. The Argentine pilots fought with considerable piloting skill and enormous courage, and scored a number of stunning successes against British warships, but ultimately they could not prevent the British landing and the following land campaign that resulted in complete Argentine defeat. Contents: Error compunds error, The Task force heads south, Dominance of the Sea Harrier, Enter the Exocet, The battle for East Falkland, Overall British Superiority.  As New

F-16 Fighting Falcon
Darling, Kev
ISBN: 1840373997
Airlife Pub Ltd United Kingdom 2003
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages. The world's most popular, most sought-after, multi-role fighter flew more sorties than any other aircraft during Operation Desert Storm, the revolutionary aircraft that has continuously evolved to meet global needs. Commonly referred to as the "Viper" by its aircrews, the F-16 has provided the US Air Force with its air defence capability for the last twenty-five years. The aircraft is a major export success and is in service with the air forces of Turkey, Israel, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea and Singapore. It has been steadily developed and improved and is available armed with a wide variety of combat systems for both air defence and ground attack missions. Its single afterburning turbofan allows a healthy top speed of 1,320 mph (2,124 kph) and a combat radius of up to 923 miles (1485 km). The aircraft is extremely agile with good all-round visibility from the generous bubble canopy. It has justifiably earned the reputation of being the world's favourite fighter.   As New

Among the most legendary Soviet combat aircraft of the Great Patriotic War was the Ilyushin OKB Il-2 Shturmovik, the world's first specifically designed ground attack aircraft. This publication deals with the later Type 3 variant, fitted with a swept-back wing, and its derivatives, including the Il-2KR spotter aircraft and the UIl-2 two-seat trainer.   As New

With its history maligned and discredited under Communist rule, the true story of this very successful fighter unit can now be told. This book is the story of a majestic bomber of the propeller era flying perilous combat missions against a sleek, nimble warplane of the jet age, the Soviet MiG-15. By the time North Korea attacked its southern neighbour in 1950, the B-29 had been reclassified a medium bomber. Jackson, Robert
ISBN: 184037439X
Airlife Pub Ltd United Kingdom 2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 69 photos, 17 colour profiles. In the first three years of Word War Two, the word Stuka became synonymous with terror. Across the face of Europe, troops and civilians alike quailed under the banshee wail of the Junkers 87 dive bomber as it plummeted towards its target. By 1943 the Stuka's day as a dive bomber was virtually over but it came into its own as a tank buster on the Russian front, where it fought to the bitter end. This book tells the story of the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, the units that operated it in its many campaigns, and the men who flew it into combat.  As New

Typhoon Wings of 2nd TAF 1943-45
Thomas, Chris
ISBN: 9781846039737
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM86. The Typhoon was the RAF's chosen heavyweight fighter-bomber to support the British and Canadian Armies during the invasion of northwest Europe. A specialist in the aircraft (his father flew them in WW2), author Chris Thomas has done much research on the Typhoon's operations with 2nd TAF during this crucial period of the war. His research reveals for the first time the extent, and chronology, of the struggle to equip 18 RAF and RCAF squadrons in time for D-Day, and how this feat was only narrowly achieved. These 18 squadrons (later increased to 20) were organised into highly mobile, self-supporting wings that provided devastating close support for the British and Canadian armies in their advance across northwest Europe. Thomas' book analyzes the tactics employed by the Typhoon squadrons during these epic events, supported by the words of the pilots themselves. These battles were by no means one-sided, with the Typhoons' nemesis - the highly effective German flak units - exacting a terrible toll on 2nd TAF units. Indeed, some 400 aircraft and 150 pilots were lost during the Normandy campaign alone. Losses such as these led Air Chief Marshal Sir Harry Broadhurst, Air Officer Commanding 83 Group (which controlled more than half of 2nd TAF's Typhoon squadrons), to remark 'I suppose that flying one of these aircraft was the most dangerous task the Air Force has ever asked anybody to do'. Along with photographs and diagrams, the book includes artwork by the author as well, making for a comprehensive and authoritative guide.  As New

Sopwith Triplane Aces of World War 1
Franks, Norman
ISBN: 9781841767284
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 100+ photos, 45 color profiles, 4 scale drawings. ACE62. The inspiration behind the iconic Fokker Dr I, Sopwith's Triplane was built as a replacement for the company's hugely successful, and much loved, Pup. Thanks to its massive wing area, the revolutionary Triplane boasted an unmatched rate of climb and greatly improved manoeuvrability. Indeed, when the type made its combat debut in late 1916, the Triplane could easily out-fight any other aircraft operated by either side. Used exclusively by the Royal Naval Air Service and the French Navy, theTriplane had a far greater impact on the aerial war over the Western Front than its meagre production numbers really deserved. Pilots such as Ray Collishaw, Bob Little and Roderic Dallas all enjoyed success in the bloody struggle for aerial supremacy over the Western Front in 1917. The first volume in print devoted exclusively to Triplane aces, this book includes numerous first-hand accounts, detailed appendices, more than 90 rare photographs and over 40 all-new colour profiles and planforms. Contents: The Sopwith Triplane Scout, Naval Eight, No 9 Naval Squadron, No 10 Naval and the Black Flight, Appendices.  As New

Victor Units of the Cold War
Brookes, Andrew
ISBN: 9781849083393
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM88. Of the three jet bombers that formed the RAF’s V-Force in the early years of the Cold War, the Victor was perhaps the most technologically advanced. First flown on 24 December 1952, the Victor entered service in B 1 configuration in November 1957. Further improvements were introduced with the B 2, which was optimized for high altitude. Most B 2s were equipped to carry the Blue Steel stand-off missile, but eight were modified in the strategic reconnaissance role because the Victor 2 was then the longest-ranging aircraft in the RAF. The Victor ceased to be a low-level bomber after the nuclear mission was taken over by the Royal Navy’s Polaris submarine force in the late 1960s. Thereafter, Victor 1s and 2s continued in frontline service as airborne tankers, supporting operations such as the Falklands War and the Gulf War until the last Victor flight took place on 30 November 1993. Contents: Introduction, Chapter One - The Victor Emergent, Chapter Two - High-level Cold War bombing, Chapter Three - Skybolt and Blue Steel, Chapter Four - Low-level Operations, Chapter Five - Middle East and Far East adventures, Chapter Six - Versatile Victor (MRR and tanking), Chapter Seven - Victor Ludorum (Falklands, Desert Storm).  As New

Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE96. The 357th Fighter Group produced 42 aces, more than any other group within the USAAF. Thanks to this fighter and the talented pilots assigned to the group (men such as Bud Anderson, Kit Carson, John England and Chuck Yeager) the 357th achieved a faster rate of aerial victories than any other Eighth Air Force group during the final year of the war. It also claimed the highest number of aerial kills - 56 - in a single mission. The group was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations (the unit equivalent of the Medal of Honor). AH-64 Apache Units of Operations Enduring Freedom & Iraqi Freedom
Bernstein, Jonathan
ISBN: 9781841768489
Osprey Pub Co  2005
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM57. After the attacks on 11 September 2001, Apache units made significant contributions to the Coalition campaign against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. Functioning as the 'killer' part of US Army Hunter-killer teams, Apaches sought out and brought overwhelming firepower to bear on Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, as well as providing direct support to Coalition troops on the ground. Apaches spearheaded the advance of the 3rd Infantry and the 101st airborne divisions into Iraq, engaging in some of the heaviest fighting along the western axis of advance. Weather and enemy fire took a heavy toll on Apaches operating in Western Iraq, but the resilience and flexibility of the Apache was central to the success of this campaign.   As New

Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM26. For every American fighter pilot involved in the Vietnam War, the ultimate goal was to 'kill a MiG'. In eight years of conflict 43 Vietnamese Peoples Air Force aircraft were claimed by US Navy and US Marine Corps Phantom II crews, and one single ace crew produced. Navy Phantom IIs scored the first kills of the Vietnam War, in April 1965, as well as scoring the last in January 1973. US Army AH-1 Cobra Units in Vietnam
Bernstein, Jonathan
ISBN: 9781841766065
Osprey Pub Co  2003
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM41. Bell’s AH-1 Cobra was the first dedicated helicopter gunship to reach frontline service anywhere in the world. Developed as a private venture by the manufacturer, and based on the mechanics of the ubiquitous UH-1 Huey, the Cobra proved a huge success once introduced into combat with the US Army in 1966. Built as a key weapon in the Advanced Aerial Fire Support System concept of 1965, the AH-1 was one of the few aircraft to reach the combat zone after actual combat experience went into its design. The AH-1 helped reduce the losses being suffered by vulnerable troop transport helicopters by providing effective fire suppression during airmobile operations. This book explores its history, technology and crew.   As New

Slovakian and Bulgarian Aces of World War 2
Rajlich, Jiri
ISBN: 9781841766522
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE058. In 1939, Slovakia signed a protection agreement with the German Reich and joined the attack on Poland, where its Avia B-534-equipped fighter squadrons claimed their first kills. In October 1942, having made do with obsolete aircraft, the Slovaks were equipped with Bf 109Es and eventually acquired 43 Messerschmitt fighters. The Slovaks would claim over 215 kills. Although it supported German efforts in Yugoslavia and Greece, Bulgaria did not declare war on Russia. First seeing action in August 1943, Bulgarian fighter pilots used their Bf 109Gs to good effect. From late 1943 through to mid-1944, the Bulgarian pilots attempted to defend the country from American bombers, and Stoyanov and Bochev made ace during this period.   As New

Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM43. Designed to form the backbone of Strategic Air Command’s nuclear deterrent, the B-52 force was brought to higher states of readiness whenever crisis threatened the USA, most notably when Kennedy and Khruschev went eyeball-to-eyeball over Cuba. This book follows the story of the B-52 from its genesis to its first combat missions in June 1965 and through to the briefly sustained but bloodily fought Linebacker II offensive in late 1972. 4+ Publishing Prague 2006
Soft Cover New book, 28 pages. Two final versions of Supermarine's Type 356 - the Mk.22 and 24s - stand at the pinnacle of the propeller driven fighter development initialized in the early 1930s by the ingenious Reginald J. Mitchell. These late Mark aeroplanes, with excellent manoeuvrability, and with speed, climb and ceiling far superior to earlier marks, truly perpetuate the whole Spitfire family. Too late to take part in any World War II action the ultimate Spitfire variants equipped only a limited number of operational, reserve and auxiliary units of the Royal Air Force. However, many found their way to overseas air forces - Hong Kong, Egypt, Singapore, Syria and what was then Southern Rhodesia. Some of these aeroplanes were still in service as late as the mid-1950s, by which time their fighter role had been taken over by other jet-powered types. F-100 Super Sabre Units of the Vietnam War
Davies, Peter; Menard, David
ISBN: 9781849084468
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM89. While the F-105 Thunderchief and F-4 Phantom flew the majority of the fighter-bomber missions over North Vietnam, the Thunderchief's service predecessor, the F-100 Super Sabre stayed on to fight the air war in South Vietnam until June 1971. Although it was designed as an air defence fighter, and was later given nuclear capability as the mainstay of Tactical Air Command's deterrent posture, it was the F-100's toughness, adaptability and reliability that made it ideally suited to the incessant 'taxi-rank' close support and counter-insurgency missions in Vietnam. The jet's four 20 mm cannon and external loads of bombs, rockets and fire-bombs defeated many enemy incursions, with US troops in contact expressing a preference for the accuracy and skill of F-100 pilots to save them in situations where ordnance had to be dropped very close to their own lines. Many courageous deeds were performed, although 242 F-100s and 87aircrew were lost in action. Used at the start of Operation Rolling Thunder in March 1965 as an escort for F-105 strikes, the Super Sabre fought MiGs and one pilot made a credible claim for a MiG-17 destroyed, but the more capable F-4 Phantom II soon replaced it in this role. The air-to-ground war was fought by F-100C/D/F pilots from 21 TAC and Air National Guard squadrons at six bases in South Vietnam and Thailand. From September 1965, a number of two-seat F-100Fs were equipped to detect and pinpoint SA-2 missile sites, and they led F-105s in to destroy them in hazardous missions that founded the suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD) techniques developed for F-105F and F-4C 'Wild Weasel' aircraft later in the war. Other F-100Fs replaced fragile piston-engined forward air control (FAC) aircraft, providing more survivable high-speed airborne management of strike missions. Maj George Day, awarded the Medal of Honor in 1973, was the first leader of this 'Misty FAC' unit. The aircraft's strengths and eccentricities will be examined through analysis of its performance and the anecdotes of those who flew and serviced it.   As New

AV-8B Harrier II Units of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm
Nordeen, Lon
ISBN: 9781849084444
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM90. In the 1970s the USMC bought the AV-8A Harrier from the UK to test V/STOL concepts for close air support. A successful funding battle was subsequently fought in the 1980s to secure military, political and economic support to expand this concept to develop and field the second generation AV-8B Harrier II from the late 1980s onward. The AV-8B was, and still is, the only tactical aircraft that could deploy with Marine forces on amphibious assault ships and provide air cover and close air support separate from large deck aircraft carriers. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, a coalition of nations launched Operation Desert Shield in order to defend Saudi Arabia. The Harrier II was among the first tactical air assets to be deployed to the region to support ground forces in their efforts to halt the advance of Iraqi forces at the border with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. During Operation Desert Storm, the five units flying the AV-8B in-theatre became some of the top tactical squadrons of choice by air mission planners for allied battlefield preparation and close air support. This was due to the AV-8B's capabilities, proximity to the battle zone and the proven abilities of Marine pilots and forward air controllers, who were closely integrated with ground forces and knew their business so well. The untold story of the AV-8B in this conflict is vividly brought to life by the author through firsthand accounts and period photography sourced from those that were there, as well as official archives. This is planned to be the first of three volumes on USMC Harrier IIs in combat, with follow-on titles covering the jet's operations in Iraq in 2003-08 and Afghanistan in 2001-2009.   As New

F-105 Wild Weasel vs SA-2 ’Guideline’ SAM
Davies, Peter
ISBN: 9781849084710
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE35. Although America entered the Vietnam War with some of the world's most sophisticated combat aircraft, the majority of their missions involved conventional bombing and fighter engagements that employed quite similar tactics to those previously used in the Korean War and World War 2. The real step change in aerial fighting came with the use of air-to-air and ground-to-air missiles. Developing methods of defeating the latter involved the rapid evolution of technology and tactics which, over twenty years later, would enable the USA to win the air war over Iraq in Operation Desert Storm in a matter of hours. During the Vietnam War, the appearance of Russian SA-2 missiles around Hanoi in 1965 alarmed US officials. Initially reluctant to attack the missile sites, the increasing toll of US aircraft and the ways in which the SA-2s inhibited bombing tactics meant that new methods of dealing with the sites had to be developed quickly. Electronic reconnaissance aircraft had some success with jamming of the missiles' guidance systems at long range, but the real solution lay with an aircraft that could detect the radars at closer range, offer itself as a target to the missile sites and attack them before missiles could be launched at US bombers. F-105Fs equipped with new technology quickly became an essential addition to all USAF strike missions over North Vietnam. Using new Shrike and Standard ARM anti-radiation missiles and radar detection equipment developed by the US Navy, the F-105F and its more sophisticated successor, the F-105G, continued their hair-raising battles with North Vietnamese missile batteries throughout the rest of the Vietnam War. Here, author Peter Davies recounts the dramatic contests between these newly outfitted F-105s and the missile sites in Vietnam in a highly illustrated account, drawing on first-hand pilot experiences and technical manuals to present a full history of the technologies and tactics of both sides.   As New

SPAD VII vs Albatros D III: 1917-18
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781849084758
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE36. When originally conceived, the French SPAD VII and German Albatros D II represented steps away from an emphasis on maneuver in aerial combat in favor of speed and durability - factors that came into play in hit-and-run tactics. At the end of 1916, however, Albatros tried to have the best of both worlds by incorporating the sesquiplane wing of the nimble Nieuport 17 into its D III. The result combined the better downward view and maneuverability of the Nieuport with the power and twin machine guns of the Albatros D II, but at a high price - a disturbing tendency for the single-spar lower wing to fail in a dive. While Albatros (and the Austrian Oeffag firm, which built the fighter under license) sought to alleviate that weakness with various reinforcing measures, the Germans developed tactics to maximize the D III's strengths and minimize its shortcomings. At the same time, the French worked to improve the SPAD VII with more power and a more reliable cooling system before moving on to the twin-gunned SPAD XIII. While all that was going on, the Albatros D III became a mainstay of the German and Austro-Hungarian air services in frequent encounters with SPAD VIIs flown by French, Belgian, British, Italian and American airmen.   As New

P-47 Thunderbolt vs Bf 109G/K: Europe 1943-45
Bowman, Martin
ISBN: 9781846033155
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE11. The P-47 climbed like a homesick angel and dived for the deck like a rock. This was due to the mighty power of its air-cooled, turbo-supercharged Double Wasp engine, combined with a brutish barrel-shaped airframe. The deadly firepower was totally destructive. The world's largest single-engined fighter when the USA entered the war, the P-47's 18 cylinders vibrated the whole aircraft like it was going to destroy itself. More Thunderbolts were built than any other American fighter in history. In December 1942, the P-47 was the only readily available American-produced high performance fighter. At altitudes up to 15,000 ft, its rival, the Bf 109G, had all-round better performance than the P-47C, most notably in rate of climb. The Thunderbolt's performance progressively improved above 15,000 ft, and between 25,000 to 30,000 ft it surpassed those of the enemy fighters, except for rate of climb and acceleration - the P-47 was double the weight of a Bf 109. Although the latter could initially accelerate well in a dive, the P-47C soon overhauled it and easily out-dived the Messerschmitt from high altitudes. P-47 pilots were advised to avoid combats at low altitudes and slow speeds. Thunderbolt pilots were synonymous with the might of the Eighth Air Force's fighter strength from the summer of 1943 until the end of the conflict, during which time the P-47 was operated in the escort, ground strafing and dive-bombing roles. The P-47 was flown exclusively by Gabby Gabreski and Robert Johnson, the top two scoring American fighter aces in the ETO/MTO. All told, the Thunderbolt was flown by 18 of the top 30 American aces in Europe during the war, while the Bf 109G was the staple Defense of the Reich fighter from 1943 to war's end. The numerous aspects of the pilots' training, the tactics they used once in combat and the leading edge technology employed by these second generation World War 2 fighters is covered in detail, as is the continual development of both fighter types. Finally, the key elements of both fighters - the airframe, engine, armament and flying characteristics -are also explored through first hand accounts from the aces that went head-to-head in the war-torn skies of Europe.   As New

SE 5a vs Albatros D V: Western Front 1917-18
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781846034718
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE20. Amid the ongoing quest for aerial superiority during World War I, the late spring of 1917 saw two competing attempts to refine proven designs. The Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5a incorporated improvements to the original SE 5 airframe along with 50 more horsepower to produce a fast, reliable ace-maker. The Albatros D V, a sleeker development of the deadly D III of 'Bloody April' notoriety, proved to be more disappointing as it suffered a rash of lower wing failures. Nevertheless, Albatrosen remained the most numerically important fighters available when the Germans launched their final offensive on March 21 1918. Despite its shortcomings, German tactics and skill made the Albatros D V a dangerous foe that SE 5a pilots dismissed at their peril. This title tells the story of the design and development of these two fighters and concludes with their dramatic fights in the last year of World War I.   As New

USN F-4 Phantom II vs VPAF MiG-17: Vietnam 1965-72
Davies, Peter
ISBN: 9781846034756
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE23. The Vietnam War placed unexpected demands upon American military forces and equipment, which had been focused on the probability of tactical nuclear warfare. The principal US naval fighter, the McDonnell F-4 Phantom, had originally been designed to defend the Fleet from air attack at long range. However, its tremendous power and bomb-carrying capacity made it an obvious candidate for the attack mission in Vietnam from 1965 onwards. Its opponent was the MiG-17, a direct descendant of the MiG-15, which had given USAF Sabre jets a hard fight in the Korean War. This book brings to life their dangerous duels and includes detailed cockpit views and other specially commissioned artwork to highlight the benefits and shortcomings of each plane type. It was in the skies over Vietnam that many of the techniques of air combat evolved as pilots learned how to use and to defeat supersonic fighters for the first time.   As New

Fw 190 Sturmbocke vs B-17 Flying Fortress: Europe 1944-45
Forsyth, Robert
ISBN: 9781846039416
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE24. The Fw 190 was one of the best air superiority aircraft of World War II, and when it first appeared over the Channel in 1941 it sent shockwaves through the Allied air commands. By 1944, these fighters had been up-gunned to serve as the front line of defence against the Allied bombing campaign. Although the Fw 190s were responsible for shooting down hundreds of Allied bombers, they met their match against the USAAF B-17 ‘Flying Fortress’. Capable of carrying 4,000 lbs of bombs and bristling with .50cal machine guns, the B-17 could sow death in every direction. Using brand-new artwork and first-hand accounts, this book recreates the deadly drama in the skies above Germany in the closing stages of the war. Contents: Introduction, Chronology, Design and development, The Strategic Situation, Technical Specifications, The Combatants, Combat, Statistics and Analysis, Conclusion, Further Reading.  As New

Hurricane I vs Bf 110: 1940
Holmes, Tony
ISBN: 9781846039454
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE29. The Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter and saw significant combat during the fight over France and the Battle of Britain. One of its principal opponents in 1940 was the Bf 110 twin-engined, two-seat heavy fighter. Following the invasion of France, these fighters clashed regularly as the RAF's Hurricanes attacked German bomber formations defended by Bf 110. Although the Hurricane had the upper hand when it came to maneuverability, the Bf 110 outclassed it in terms of fire power, with its mix of machine guns and cannon. This is the story of the dramatic battles in the skies over France and the Channel as Britain desperately tried to hold back the German onslaught from her shores.   As New

Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War
Krylov, Leonid; Tepsurkaev, Yuriy
ISBN: 9781846032998
Osprey Publishing Ltd Oxford, United Kingdom 2008
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, 72 photos, 36 color profiles, 8 1/72 scale drawings. ACE82. The Soviet Union began assisting the People's Republic of China in its establishment of a modern air force in 1950, when Soviet Air Force regiments were sent to train local pilots. China's involvement in the Korean War in late October 1950 inevitably drew Soviet pilots into the war, with a total of 52 Soviet pilots scoring five or more victories there. The history of these covert actions has been a long-buried secret and this book is the first English publication to detail the only instance when the Cold War became 'hot'. This book uncovers Soviet combat experiences during the Korean War from detailed unit histories and rare first-hand account. With access to extensive Russian archives, the authors offer an enthralling insight into an air war that has been largely covered up and neglected. Illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and detailed full colour profiles, this book is a unique opportunity to read about an often-forgotten aspect of the Cold War. Contents: Motives for the Soviet Air Force's participation in the Korean War; Reasons for considerable exaggeration of kills claimed by Soviet pilots, compared with real losses to UN forces; Initial participation of Soviet pilots in the Korean War; Establishment of the 64th IAK; Combat employment; Combat operations of La-11 night interceptors of the 351st IAP; First success of MiG-15bis nightfighters.  As New

Arab MiGs Volume 1: Mikoyan I Gurevich MiG-15 and MiG-17 in Service with Air Forces of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco and Syria
Cooper, Tom; Nicolle, David
ISBN: 9780982553923
Harpia Publishing  2009
Soft Cover New book, 256 pages. Starting in 1955, and for the following 20 years, MiG-15 and MiG-17 formed the backbone of several Arab air forces. They played a prominent role in four major wars and dozens of minor incidents. Covering the first decade of this period, this study - Arab MiGs, Volume 1, the first in a series of publications - provides a unique and previously unavailable insight into the service history of both types with five Arab air forces. Even more so, it tells the story of the people that flew MiG-15s and MiG-17s in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and Syria. Several of whom became dominant political figures in the recent history of these countries. The reason why Arab countries began purchasing MiGs and thus became embroiled in the Cold War is approached and discussed from an entirely new and original - Arab - point of view. Details about combat operations during three major wars between Arabs and Israel, as well as the war in Yemen of the 1960s, are reconstructed on basis of primary evidence, in the form of original documents and participants' recollections. Aircraft colours, unit insignia, serial- and construction numbers are described in unprecedented detail. Over 200 photos, colour artworks, maps and tables illustrate the story of aircraft and their crews.  As New

Luftwaffe Viermot Aces 1942-45
Forsyth, Robert
ISBN: 9781849084383
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE101. This book will recount the actions and personalities of the Luftwaffe fighter force who excelled in this tough and grim form of aerial warfare. Planned as six chapters, in Chapter 1 the author will describe the initial onslaught of the USAAF air offensive and the German response in 1942 and 1943 during which time tactics of defence were developed and refined, from close-range, head-on attacks against massed formations of B-17s to attacks from the rear. Chapter 2 will detail the continuing air campaign, including the bitter battles of Schweinfurt and Berlin with biographies of many of the leading aces. Chapter 3 will focus on one Gruppe, II./JG I, during the desperate first four months of 1944 when the unit was operating at full stretch against the Allied bombing campaign directed at the German aircraft plants. Chapter 4 will deal with the deployment of the twin-engined Bf 110G, Me 210 and Me 410 Zerstörer (destroyers), hurriedly converted and thrown into the battle, heavily armed with 37 mm cannon, weapons packs of twin MG 151/20 20 mm cannon and 21 cm air-to-air mortars intended to break up the defensive cohesion of the bomber formations. Chapter 5 will cover the desperate missions of Sturmstaffel 1 and IV./JG 3, II./JG 4 and II./JG 300, the so-called 'Sturmgruppen' ('Close Assault Groups'). The final chapter will portray the new dimension in aerial warfare from the autumn of 1944 - the Me 262 jet-powered interceptor. Fighter aces and those who became 'jet aces' whilst flying with JG 7 included Georg-Peter Eder (53 victories), Heinrich Ehrler (201 victories), Adolf Glunz (71 victories), Klaus Neumann (32 victories), Viktor Petermann (64 victories), Rudi Rademacher (102 victories), and Hans Waldmann (132 victories).   As New

Boulton Paul Defiant
Listemann, Phil H; Thomas, Andrew
ISBN: 9782953254433
Philedition  2009
Soft Cover New book, 50 pages, 40 photos, 12 colour profiles. This, the eighth booklet of P. Listemann’s 'Allied Wings' series, is dedicated to the Boulton Paul Defiant and its service during 1940 as a day-fighter with 264 Squadron and 141 Squadron of the RAF. It concentrates on the unique deployment of the Defiant as a purely turret-equipped fighter, through initial successes during the Battle of France period, and the later disappointing and costly missions flown during the Battle of Britain. Subsequent use of the aircraft as a night-fighter, a target-tug or an air-sea-rescue aircraft is not within the scope of this book. The first four pages describe the concept, prototype development and tardy service introduction of the fighter ; intended to supplement the eight-gun Spitfire & Hurricanes of Fighter Command. The basic airframe of the Defiant was good - but lacking fixed forward-firing armament and when fitted with the turret - it could fulfil neither the expectations of the designers nor those of the RAF when flown under the combat conditions prevailing in the summer and autumn of 1940. In the usual 'Allied Wings' style units and their operational histories are described in sequence. Twenty pages cover the ops flown as daylight fighter units by 264 and 141 Squadrons. A further page of text lists the second-line units which flew the Defiant during 1940 and is followed by the operational diary listing sortie totals of both Squadrons. Tables, maps & listings in the by now recognizable 'Allied Wings' pastel background style present ; the UK bases flown from ; claims list of both units for May to-August 1940 ; aircraft lost on operations with crew details, aircraft lost by accident ; individual airframe service from being taken on and being struck off Squadron service during the period and the Roll of Honour of all aircrew killed up to 31st August 1940. Richly illustrated the reader will find forty interesting b/w photographs - many of which showing crashes & wreckage in the Netherlands which will probably be new to readers in other countries. Four pages of colour artwork by Malcolm Laird present three side-profiles and varieties of fuselage roundel.   As New

The Mikoyan-Gurevitch MiG-21 Fishbed (1955-2010)
Paloque, Gerard
ISBN: 9782352501473
Histoire & Collection  2009
Soft Cover New book, 98 pages. The MiG-21 originated with an official request from the Soviet authorities in 1954 for a light, high-performance (Mach 2 at 20,000m) frontline fighter to protect military and production installations from potential raids by American bombers. Built for almost half a century in twenty or so different versions, in four successive generations, the Fishbed (its NATO codename) was not only the jet which was built in the largest numbers in the whole of aviation history, but also the aircraft which was built in the greatest numbers since the end of the Second World War, all types and all countries included. Used by fifty or so air forces on four of the five continents, the MiG-21 took part in most of the major conflicts during the four last decades, from the Six-Day War in 1967 to the Balkans in 1999. At the present time more than a thousand examples of this fighter, of which a large number were built in China (Shenyang F-7 and J-7) are still in service, with their career continuing thanks to modernisation programmes for the surviving aircraft which have enabled them to pass cheerfully into the 21st Century.  As New

Osprey Pub Co University Park, Illinois, U.S.A. 2003
Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG087. The US Army requirement for a light utility helicopter was formulated after the Korean War. Bell's Model 204 design won a competition in 1955, and was given the military designation H-40, later renamed the HU-1 Iroquois. The original design called for a helicopter that could be used for transport, airborne battlefield command and control, medical evacuation, fire support co-ordination and search and rescue. Later its missions would be expanded to include troop insertion/extraction, armed escort and special operations. This title details all the technological background behind the development and use of the Huey 'Slick' in Vietnam, as well as covering all the major uses that this transport aircraft was put to. Victory Air Displays: Prague 1946 & 1947
Kloucek, Pavel; Kudlicka, Bohumir
ISBN: 9788361421429
Mushroom Model Publications  2011
Soft Cover New book, 88 pages. In September 1946, the Union of Pilots of the Czechoslovak Republic held an International Air Show at Prague-Ruzyne airport. Redolent of the country’s splendid pre-war Military Air Days, the 1946 show attracted more than half a million visitors, while military aircraft from Britain, France and the USA joined local civilian and military machines in the air and on the ground. Flying displays featuring thrilling aerobatics, massed Spitfire flypasts, Neville Duke’s stunning Meteor routine and even a B-29 Superfortress wowed the crowd, while the re-emerging Czech aero industry revealed its latest machines - new, indigenous designs, as well as those based on German aircraft - to an adoring press and public. The Czech National Aeroclub attempted to repeat the success of 1946 with its Civilian Sporting Air Day the following July, but without the cooperation of Ruzyne airport, the event did little more than dampen public enthusiasm for the Second International Air Show in September. Nevertheless, the autumn event drew even greater support from the Americans and the British, boasting no fewer than four types of jet fighter - Avia S-92 (Me 262), de Havilland Vampire, Gloster Meteor and Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star - as well as a rocket-assisted S-99 (Bf 109) take off! Perhaps more importantly, it provided one last stage for Czechoslovakia’s proud pilots, most of them ex-RAF, before the ravages of the communist regime forced many to leave and the remainder into persecution. A fascinating and unusual glimpse of the aviation scene in Eastern Europe before the Iron Curtain came down, and some rare photos of major aircraft of the period.   As New

Vought F-8 Crusader - 1955-1999
Paloque, Gerard
ISBN: 9782352501855
Histoire & Collection  2011
Soft Cover New book, 82 pages. When it built the Crusader, the US Navy’s first supersonic aircraft, Vought repeated the success it had had with the legendary WWII fighter, the F4U Corsair. 1250 examples were built. This fighter with its unusual variable incidence wing, made its maiden flight in March 1955 and equipped more than seventy Navy and Marine Corps squadrons during its thirty year career. Used in combat as early as the autumn of 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis, the Crusader distinguished itself during the first part of the Vietnam War in which it scored eighteen confirmed kills, more than half of the US Navy’s total of kills for the whole of the conflict, earning it the unofficial title of 'MiG-Master'. Replaced gradually by more effective fighters like the F-4 Phantom II and the F-14 Tomcat, the Crusader, nicknamed the 'Last Gunfighter' finished its career in the United States in the Reserve units or specialising in photographic reconnaissance at the end of the eighties. France, the only export client except for the Philippines, had Crusaders specially designed to operate from its small aircraft carriers, and the Aeronavale’s last 'Crouze', and thereby the last F-8 in the world, was withdrawn from service in October 1999.  As New

SPA124 Lafayette Escadrille: American Volunteer Airmen in World War 1
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 9781841767529
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU17. This book tells the story of one of World War I’s most famous squadrons, Spa. 124 - the only French squadron made up entirely of American volunteers (save for the commander and executive officer.) Organised in April 1916, the group was successively dubbed the Escadrille Americaine, Escadrille des Volontaires and finally the Escadrille Lafayette. Its achievements were modest, but it included several colourful characters who captured the public imagination and played a major role in gaining American sympathy for the Allied cause. When the United States finally entered the war, many Lafayette veterans helped prepare US Army Air Service and Navy pilots for combat, although a few chose to stay on with the French. Contents: Origins of N.124 (Formation and early operations), Verdun and the Somme (Major actions and the adoption of the sobriquet 'Lafayette'), Lafayette becomes famous (Spad VIIs and operations through February 18, 1918), Split Metamorphosis (Summaries of the 103rd Aero Squadron and Spa.124), Escadrilles and Commanders of GC.12.  As New

Richthofen’s Circus: Jagdgeschwader Nr 1
VanWyngarden, Greg
ISBN: 9781841767260
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU16. Undoubtedly the most famous of any nation’s aviation units in World War 1 was the legendary Jagdgeschwader Nr 1, or ‘The Flying Circus’ as its respectful foes labelled it. Germany’s first true fighter wing, it would always be associated with its first commander, the charismatic and revered Manfred von Richthofen. JG 1 was formed in July 1917, and for sixteen months the unit’s young pilots in their colourful aircraft battled for aerial dominance of the Western Front. From its ranks emerged many of Germany’s most successful airmen, including the Red Baron’s brother Lothar; Ernst Udet; Werner Voss; Erich Löwenhardt and Hermann Göring. This book charts the World War I experiences of JG 1. Contents: Origins (the early careers of JG I’s Jastas and formation of the Geschwader), Summer Successes (JG I’s operations in the 3rd Battle of Ypres, July - September 1917), Triplane Trials (operations primarily with the Fokker Dr I through the Battle of Cambrai, October 1917 - February 1918), The ‘Kaiser’s Battle’ (operations during ‘Operation Michael,’ the last great German offensive of March - May 1918), New Leaders, New Equipment, Fighting Retreat, Jagdstaffel and Geschwader Commanders of JG I, Aces’ listing.  As New

No 56 Sqn RAF/RFC
Revell, Alex
ISBN: 9781846034282
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU33. By the autumn of 1916, with the formation of the new Jagdstaffeln, the pendulum of aerial supremacy had once again swung in favour of the German Air Force. The battle of the Somme in 1916 saw the RFC suffer losses of nearly 400 aircrew between September and November, and British casualties were to reach a zenith in the ‘Bloody April’ of 1917 when 319 aircrew were lost, killed or taken prisoner of war. This was the situation when No 56 Squadron arrived in France at the end of April 1917. Equipped with the superb new SE 5, it was the first fighter squadron of the RFC to be able to meet the Albatros and Halberstadt fighters of the Jagdstaffeln on equal terms. The squadron’s pilots won an incredible tally of decorations, and by the end of the hostilities many famous fighter pilots had passed through its ranks - Albert Ball VC, Canadian Hank Burden and American Robert Caldwell to name but a few. In this study, Alex Revell uncovers the early days and development of No 56 Squadron, its victories and losses, and the birth of a proud tradition. Contents: Prologue, September 1917, 1 - Early days; 2 - In France; 3 - First successes and casualties; 4 - Summer and Autumn of 1917 - the golden age of air fighting; 5 - The battles of Cambrai and Kaiserschlacht; 6 - New Blood - the summer and autumn of 1918; 7 - The end of the long struggle, Appendices.  As New

Jagdgeschwader 400: Germany’s Elite Rocket Fighters
Ransom, Steven; Hans-Hermann Cammann
ISBN: 9781846039751
Osprey Pub Co  2010
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU37. The Jagdgeschwader 400 group was formed for the sole purpose of flying one of the world's most revolutionary aircraft - the rocket-powered Me 163. Although the Me 163 scored relatively few kills, giving it a success rate much lower than the Me 262, it still had a massive psychological impact upon the Allies, and the technology and experiences gained in the Me 163 went on to influence the jet fighters of modern times. The introduction of jet-powered aircraft demanded massive changes in training, equipment, servicing and tactics, all of which are described and examined in this essential analysis of the story of the Me 163 in frontline service with Erprobungskommando 16 and Jagdgeschwader 400.  As New

Jasta 18 - The Red Noses
VanWyngarden, Greg
ISBN: 9781849083355
Osprey Pub Co  2011
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU040. The history of Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel (or Jasta) 18 is one of the more unique and complex of German fighter squadrons of World War I. In fact, the unit could be said to have had something of a split personality. Formed in Flanders at the end of October 1916, the Jasta was first commanded by Oblt von Grieffenhagen, who led it to 35 victories in nine months. In August 1917, the aggressive and demanding Oblt Rudolf Berthold took over the Staffel and brought a cadre of seasoned pilots with him from his former command. Berthold molded his new unit into a dedicated group of hunters, and left his stamp on the unit with a striking color scheme of red-nosed Pfalz and Albatros fighters with dark blue fuselage and tail surfaces. This book tells the complete story of the unit: its victories, defeats, and the great aces who flew the red-nosed fighters.  As New

Jagdgeschwader 52: The Experten
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781841767864
Osprey Pub Co  2004
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU015. Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) was the most successful and highest-scoring fighter unit, not just in Germany’s World War 2 Luftwaffe, but in the entire annals of aviation history. No other fighter group has ever come close to matching its staggering total of around 9000 enemy aircraft shot down in combat. And yet, because much of that combat took place over the tractless wastes of the Russian front, very little has been written in English about the exploits of this charismatic unit. This book provides a full combat history of JG 52 and its members, including the three top-scoring aces of all time, who claimed a total of 900 victories between them.   As New

Sopwith Camel vs Fokker Dr I: Western Front 1917-18
Guttman, Jon;
ISBN: 9781846032936
Osprey Pub Co  2008
Soft Cover New book, 80 pages, DUE07. Amid the continuous struggle for aerial superiority during World War 1, two aircraft types were at the forefront. Both rotary-engined fighters, the Sopwith Camel and the Fokker Dr I triplane were relatively slow for their time, but were regarded as the most maneuverable machines produced during the conflict, and the classic pair for a tight, evenly matched dogfight at close quarters. In this book Jon Guttman examines the fascinating story of the design and development of these deadly foes. First-hand accounts and innovative cockpit-view artwork give a thrilling insight into the pilots' experiences during the world's first aerial duels and explain their successes and failures.   As New

MiG-3 Aces of World War 2
Khazanov, Dimtriy
ISBN: 9781849084420
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE102. Created by ex-Polikarpov designers Ivanovic Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich, the MiG-1/3 family of fighters was built to satisfy a Soviet Air Force requirement for an advanced, fast, high altitude fighter. Entering service in the spring of 1941, the problematic MiG-1 had its handling problems rectified with the hasty production of the MiG-3 - the latter had its Mikulin engine moved further forward, increased outer wing dihedral and a strengthened fuselage. As of 22 June 1941, Air Force manoeuvre units in the five borderline military districts could field 917 MiG-3s. Many of these were destroyed on the ground when the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa. Nevertheless, enough examples survived to allow pilots such as Stepan Suprun (Twice Hero of the Soviet Union), Aleksandr Pokryshkin (Thrice Hero of the Soviet Union) and Lev Shestakov (Hero of the Soviet Union) to claim a number of victories on the type. Early successes by units such as 23rd and 28th IAPs resulted in 35 aerial victories being claimed by MiG-3 pilots in the first eight days of the Great Patriotic War. Other units enjoyed similar levels of success, with MiG-3-equipped 15 and 31st IAP proving themselves to be the most combat-ready fighter units on the Northwestern Front. By the end of 1941, a handful of pilots had 'made ace' flying the MiG-3, despite the Soviet air forces having taken a fearful beating at the hands of the Luftwaffe. In 1942 MiG pilots actively participated in the defence of Leningrad, Moscow, Odessa, Kiev and Sevastopol, with still more aviators becoming aces as the year progressed. Amongst them was Aleksandr Pokryshkin, the second-highest scoring Russian ace with 59 victories to his name. He claimed his first five kills while flying a MiG-3 with 55th IAP. Stalin terminated MiG-3 production in October 1941, although the fighter remained in frontline service in large numbers until mid-1942. Surviving examples continued to serve with national air defence regiments until 1943.   As New

Finland's premier fighter squadron during World War 2, Lentolaivue 24 (Flying Squadron 24) first saw action during the bloody Winter War of 1939-40, when the Soviet Red Army launched a surprise attack on the small Scandinavian country - the squadron enjoyed great success against numerically superior opposition. LLv 24 was once again in the thick of the action following the outbreak of the Continuation War in June 1941. Easily the air force's most successful fighter unit, LLv 24 claimed 877 kills, and its pilots won five direct and two indirect Mannerheim Crosses (Finland¹s highest military award) out of a total of 19 presented to all Finnish soldiers. Jagdgeschwader 51 ’Molders’
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781846030451
Osprey Pub Co  2006
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU022. JG 51 is one of the Luftwaffe's top wartime fighter units whose story has never been told in English. The unit's history encapsulates the fortunes of the Luftwaffe's fighter arm as a whole: the heady successes of the early months, the steady attrition and the growing strength of the opposition during the mid-war years, and the final chaos and collapse of the last days. The story works on other levels too: the diversity of aircraft types flown - biplanes, Messerschmitt and Focke-Wulf fighters, and even twin-engined ground-attack machines - provides for an interesting mix of hitherto unpublished images; and the wide range of markings and unit badges add colorful variety and are a bonus for the modeling fraternity. But it is, above all, the quality of the pilots who served with JG 51 that sets it apart. Through the war it numbered more Knight's Cross winners among its ranks than any other unit, and it is their stories, their successes, exploits and eventual fates, which brings this history to life.   As New

332nd Fighter Group - Tuskegee Airmen
Bucholtz, Chris
ISBN: 9781846030444
Osprey Pub Co  2007
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU024. The USAAC's Tuskegee Experiment, designed to prove that African-Americans were not capable of flying combat aircraft, ironically resulted in the creation of one of the USAAF's elite units. Crewed by highly-educated and exceptionally motivated men, the 99th Fighter Squadron, led by Col Benjamin O. Davis (later joined by the 100th, 301st, and 302nd FS to form the 332nd Fighter Group), first flew ground attack missions in P-40s in North Africa and participated in the destruction and surrender of Pantelleria, off Sicily. Later, after the unit was equipped with P-51 Mustangs, the 'Redtails' began flying escort missions deep into Germany. The unit scoreboard boasted 111 aerial kills (including several Me 262 jets), 150 strafing victories, 950 vehicles and railway rolling stock destroyed, and the sinking of a German destroyer by war's end. The group were both feared and respected by the Germans, who called them the "Schwartze Voglemenschen" (Black Birdmen), and revered by others as the "Black Red-tail Angels", partly because of their distinct red-tailed aircraft, and partly because they never lost a bomber under escort to enemy attack (a feat which was unmatched by any other USAAF fighter group in World War II). The pilots of the 332nd FG attribute their success to the discipline instilled by Col Davis, who is reputed to have told them, 'If you lose a bomber, don't bother to come back.' This book will reveal the true story of the unit who rose above discrimination to achieve elite status.   As New

479th Fighter Group: Riddle’s Raiders
Stanaway, John
ISBN: 9781846034206
Osprey Pub Co  2009
Soft Cover New book, 128 pages, AEU032. Formed in October 1943 as part of the last group of fighter units to be sent into combat in northern Europe and the Pacific, the 479th FG wrote for itself an impressive history whilst flying against the Luftwaffe from RAF Wattisham in rural Suffolk. Despite the group's P-38s not being highly regarded in the Eighth Air Force due to their unsuitability for high-altitude combat, the 479th's pilots had a fierce pride of arms. Their fighting spirit, which saw the group destroy hundreds of German aircraft, earned the 479th a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation in the late summer of 1944. The 479th transitioned to the P-51 Mustang in the autumn of 1944, and by VE-Day, some 29 aces had been created by the group, which had claimed more than 430 kills.  As New

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Aces of the Western Front
Weal, John
ISBN: 9781855325951
Osprey Pub Co  1995
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE009. The Fw 190 was the scourge of Fighter Command from the moment it appeared on the Western Front at Abbeville in August 1941 with II./JG 26. A nimble, speedy and well-armed adversary, the 'Butcher Bird' quickly proved superior to all Allied fighters of the time, particulary at medium to low altitude. Led by Experten of the calibre of 'Pips' Priller, Heinz Bar and Walter Oesau, the handful of Fw 190-equipped Jagdgeschwader flew against overwhelming odds, firstly on the Channel coast, and then in direct defence on the Reich when the Jagdflieger took on the might of the USAAF's Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. This is their story.  As New

P-38 Lightning Aces of the 82nd Fighter Group
Blake, Steve
ISBN: 9781849087438
Osprey Pub Co  2012
Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE108. When the 82nd Fighter Group was organized in March 1942, most of its initial pilot cadre was comprised of newly graduated staff sergeant pilots of Class 42-C - enlisted men! They learned to fly the P-38 at Muroc, in California's Mojave Desert, and then moved to the Los Angeles area to continue their training and to serve as part of its air defence. In September 1942 the group was transported to the East Coast, from where it shipped out to Ireland on the Queen Mary. By this time all its remaining sergeant pilots had been commissioned. As of VE-Day the 82nd Fighter Group's score of confirmed aerial victories stood at 548 aircraft shot down, plus a huge amount of enemy materiel - including aircraft - destroyed on the ground and the sea. It had been awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations. The cost of this success was high, however, for around 250 of the group's pilots had either been killed in action or captured.  As New
