Sturgeon: Target-Tug Extraordinaire
Buttler, Tony
ISBN: 9780946958771
Ad Hoc Publications  2009
4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Soft Cover New book, 84 pages. Monograph dealing wih specific aircraft types normally confine themselves to subjects that have achieved fame, pehaps by dint of their combat record, their commercial success, their unique design qualities or the significance of their existence in the history of aviation generally. The Short Sturgeon, it is fair to argue, achieved distinction in none of these fields. It was first ordered as a naval bomber but in that form did not progress beyond prototype flying. When production orders were eventually placed, they covered a target-tug variant - an aircraft type that pursues a relatively unglamorous career in second-line squadrons and is usually accorded scant attention. Nevertheless, the Sturgeon was a handsome machine and is, technically speaking, of considerable interest on account of its being one of the very few twin engined, propeller driven aeroplanes designed for service on board aircraft carriers. In the air, it demonstrated outstanding qualities and was well-liked by its aircrews. This profusely illustrated study, by one one of Great Britain's foremost aviation authors, relates the technical and development record of the Sturgeon and considers its standing in the domain of aeronautical history. Includeing also first hand accounts from those who flew it, it presents for the first time a balanced appraisal of an intriguing subject that, hitherto, has largely been ignored.  As New

F-4 Phantom
Bowman, Martin W.
Airlife Publishing  2003
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 96 pages. The Phantom was developed for the US Navy as a long range all weather fighter and first flew in May 1958. It became operational in 1961. The US Air Force then realised that the Navy had an aircraft that was far better than any tactical aircraft in their own inventory and ordered 543 F-4C variants. There then followed a spate of orders from around the world. In Britain, it was ordered for the Royal Navy and Air Force, but was modified to take the Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan. One of the Royal Navy's Phantoms stole the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing, a record that stood until taken by the remarkable Blackbird. Phantoms have been used in combat in many conflicts throughout its long service history. It was one of America's most utilised aircraft during the long Vietnam War and has been flown in anger in the Middle East by a number of different air forces. The F-4 is still operational with several units but is now coming to the end of its long and successful period as a front line combat warplane.  As New

This new book takes a look at SPAD’s less well known two-seat designs, including the SPAD SA series, the widely used SPAD 11 and SPAD 16, and the excellent SPAD 20, which arrived just before the war ended. The latest addition to the Flying Machine Press library, SPAD Two-Seat Fighters of World War I has the most extensive coverage - history, evolution, combat use, photos, color profiles, and scale drawings - of these aircraft ever published. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Robotic Air Warfare 1917-2007
Zaloga, Stephen J.
ISBN: 9781846032431
Osprey Pub Co  2008
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 48 pages, NVG144. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are the most dynamic field of aerospace technology, and have only emerged from the shadows recently, despite having been in use for decades. After some limited use in World War II, UAVs emerged as substitutes for manned reconnaissance aircraft in missions deemed too dangerous to risk an aircrew. This book examines the development of UAV technology and speculates on its future potential. Packed with rare, recently declassified photographs and detailed full-colour cutaways, this title goes on to investigate the deployment of UAVs, from early Israeli airforce use to their current role over Iraq and Afghanistan today.  As New

Spad VII Aces of World War I
Guttman, Jon
ISBN: 1841762229
Osprey Pub Co University Park, Illinois, U.S.A. 2001
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE39. Built by the 'Société Anonyme Pour l’Aviation et ses Dérivés', (SPAD), the SPAD VII was the first successful fighting scout design to emerge from the company that had traded as Duperdussin pre-war. Flown ‘from the off’ by aces Paul Sauvage and Georges Guynemer, the scouts made an immediate impression. Indeed, the latter pilot was so impressed that he dubbed the Type VII the ‘flying machine gun’. The first of two volumes on SPAD aces, this book tells the whole story from the ace perspective. By the time production of the SPAD VII ended in the final months of 1918, around 6000 examples had been built, and Allied aces on every front had enjoyed success with the type.  As New

Vulcan Units of the Cold War

ISBN: 9781846032974
Osprey Pub Co  2009
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, ACE72. The best of the three RAF jet bombers in the early years of the Cold War, the Vulcan was designed as the Avro 698, and possessed fighter-like manoeuvrability at low level despite its size. First flown in August 1952, the Vulcan entered service in February 1957. Most were equipped to carry the Blue Steel stand-off missile, but in 1966 around 50 Vulcans were re-deployed in a tactical low-level bombing role. Three flew during the Falklands War, and the last Vulcans in service were used as aerial tankers until April 1984. This book examines the design of the Vulcan, exploring the improvements made to its engine and its evolving combat role. The illustrations include many in-flight photographs and detailed colour profiles. This is a timely examination of a distinctive and ground-breaking aircraft. Contents; Forging the hammer - development of the Vulcan; Cold War deterrent - high level lay down; Long range stand-off; Low level sanctuary; Colonial adventures; The Versatile Vulcan (MRR and tanking); Black Buck - the Falklands bombing; SEAD missions.  As New

Fairey IIIF: Interwar Military Workhorse
Jarrett, Philip
ISBN: 9780946958726
Ad Hoc Publications  2009
4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Soft Cover New book, 248 pages, 491 photographs, 20 line drawings, 31 colour profiles. Few interwar military aircraft gave such widespread and valuable service as the Fairey IIIF. From Great Britain to North Africa, the Middle East and Far East, it was to be found, in both landplane and seaplane form, serving at RAF and Royal Navy bases and on board aircraft carriers, capital ships and cruisers. Its versatility enabled it to perform a variety of roles - general-purpose aircraft, ambulance, bomber, carrier-borne or catapult-launched reconnaissance seaplane, gunnery spotter and target tug and glider-target launcher. The IIIF also found military buyers in several countries, serving in Argentina, Chile, Greece and New Zealand in small numbers, and it proved useful as a test-bed for engines, silencers and naval equipment - a sure sign that it was a capable and reliable aeroplane. The greatest accolade bestowed upon the IIIF, however, was that it was the chosen mount for Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) and Prince George when they flew with the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm. Here, Philip Jarrett, one of our foremost aviation historians, has gathered together an astonishing collection of almost 500 photographs of this versatile aircraft, the vast majority of which have come from private archives and are hitherto unpublished, and supplied an original and incisive commentary to accompany them, the whole providing the most detailed appraisal of the Fairey IIIF ever to appear in print.  As New

F4U Corsair Units of the Korean War
Thompson, Warren
ISBN: 9781846034114
Osprey Publishing  2009
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 96 pages, COM78. The definitive account of F-4 Corsair Units deployed in the Korean War, this book tells the story of the 26 US Navy Squadrons, most of which were carrier based, and the 6 Marine Corps F-4 squadrons that flew combat missions against the North Koreans. Drawing from a vast repository of personal interviews with F-4 pilots, the author paints a harrowing picture of the deadly combat of this often forgotten air war. Included in this volume is the story of Lt Guy Bordelon, the US Navy's sole ace of the Korean War, who flew an F4U-5N night-fighter against the night raiders sent up by the Korean Air force. Backing up the text is a vast number of previously unpublished private photographs that bring the stories of these pilots to life. Finally the book contains extensive appendices that detail every unit deployment by carrier, air group, Corsair model and tail code. Also included is a detailed list noting every Corsair lost in the war, with tail number, pilot, date of loss and the unit.  As New

US Navy A-1 Skyraider Units of the Vietnam War
Burgess, Rick; Rausa, Zip
ISBN: 9781846034107
Osprey Pub Co  2009
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Soft Cover New book, 112 pages, COM77. Designed and built as a carrier-based attack aircraft in 1944, the A-1 reached frontline units too late to see combat in World War 2. With the advent of jets in the late 1940s, the Skyraider was seen as a dated throwback to the golden age of piston-engined naval aviation. Despite its days seemingly numbered, the A-1 proved to be a huge success in the Korean War. Remaining in production through to 1957, some 3,180 Skyraiders had been built by the time the last one left the Douglas plant. Nicknamed the ''flying dump truck'', the A-1 remained a key component in naval air wings into the 1960s, allowing the aircraft to play its part in the escalating conflict in Vietnam. Both A-1 attack and EA-1F airborne early warning aircraft saw action in Southeast Asia from 1960 through to 1969, when the last examples were finally retired from carrier decks. The A-1s in particular bombed targets in both North and South Vietnam, despite the aircraft being highly vulnerable to enemy flak and fighters. Co-written by a two-tour Vietnam War combat veteran in the A-1, this is the first book that focuses exclusively on the aircraft's service in Vietnam, providing a must-have volume for Vietnam aviation enthusiasts.  As New
