The Summer Pudding Club Book: 100 Glorious Summertime Recipes
Turner, Keith & Jean
Headline UK 1999
Hardcover Unbelievably for a book about puddings it comes in under the 500g so that's a good start. Fault? It has a small splot low down on the dj, it may be a pudding drip? This came to my attention watching River Cafe cheffie trying (unsuccessfully) to win the local pud comp at the hotel get together. Following the phenomenal success of THE PUDDING CLUB BOOK, this sequel delves further into the depths of pleasure and comfort-eating by exploring the delights of traditional summer desserts like trifles and syllabubs and their many variations. Like its predecessor, this book concentrates on traditional British puddings, which have been tried and tested with relish by the many passionate members of the Pudding Club. review >>> Puddings, now that's a real word to savour. This book is also one to savour. The recipes are sophisticated in their simplicity and I couldn't find one which I didn't like although I have to admit that I didn't try very hard.  Excellent/Very Good-good

THE RIVER COTTAGE YEAR
Fearnley-Whittingstall, Hugh
ISBN: 0340828226
Index Books UK 2006
Card Cover In this book Hugh writes about the year on his Dorset smallholding. He recalls, month by month, the highs and lows of past years, and anticipates the 12 months ahead - what'll be in season when, and when'll be the best months to crack on with such tasks as chick rearing and sheep shearing, haymaking and hedge laying. But, for all its outdoorsy information, the real focus of THE RIVER COTTAGE YEAR is indoors - at Hugh's kitchen table. With over 100 brand new recipes, this is above all a cookery book. "Some lip smackingly delicious recipes guaranteed to bring out the country girl or boy in you" Heat Wonderfully illustrated with full page colour plates. English Bread and Yeast Cookery
David, Elizabeth
Allen Lane UK 1977 1st
Hardcover 591pp & heading towards a kilo. The "background" material of David's long-awaited work is in fact a very imposing foreground; nearly half the book is devoted to such matters as the botanical origins of wheat, the technology of milling both before and since the Industrial Revolution, the commercial manufacture of yeasts, and the history of ovens. What David is really out to do is to explore the role of bread in English life over the past few centuries. Hence her recipe-section, too, proves to be a magnificent historical anthology filled with lore from every source imaginable--Robert May, Hannah Glasse, Eliza Acton, forgotten Women's Institute compilations, professional baking manuals, letters from readers. reviews > Forget the current deluge of books by wannabe celebrity bakers. This is a deeply personal exploration of baking by one of the all-time great cookery writers much-imitated by the many lesser writers who have followed in her footsteps. Most important of all, the recipes have never failed me. >> It's all about the stories. >>> Elizabeth David is not just a cookery writer, she is a food writer of uncommon wit, sense, and integrity. Part recipe book, part historical document. >>>> To my mind the very best cookery books are those which are both very good to read, and are very good to cook from. My comment - abebooks recently ran an overview of 50 great cook's books; by the reviews I'd say this deserves a spot in there.  Very Good/No Jacket

Beard on Pasta
Beard, James
Running Press USA 1999
Hardcover 220pp with an author info page at end, 600g packed to post, lovely rough cut pages on this edition. This kitchen classic from James Beard-a name synonymous with culinary excellence-is back in print in a handsome edition featuring 100 of Beard's favorite international recipes and in-depth information on pasta's origins. An indispensable resource from the dean of American cooking. review >> Beard's collection of pasta recipes is ..commendable for its careful directions, informed discussion of ingredients, and absence of pretension. Another distinction, in addition to the attractive variety of little-known but non-gimmicky more-or-less Italian dishes, is the sampling of recipes from other cuisines. Besides his basic recipe for pasta, with alternatives for making it by hand or by machine, Beard gives directions for making buckwheat noodles with beer (no eggs), Bulgarian shredded noodles, spatzle, spatzen, and more.  Excellent/Excellent

The Cook’s Encyclopaedia
Stobart, Tom
B.T. Batsford Limited, London UK 1980
Hardcover 463pp & approx 1.3kg to post. I'm pleased with this book right from the use of 'encyclopaedia' instead of 'encyclopedia'. Here is a descriptive compendium of just about everything we eat and how we cook it or otherwise transform it from a lower state of edibility to a higher. Hundreds, if not thousands, of ingredients are described, with English and foreign synonyms and scientific names; recipes are given in many cases to illustrate the use of the foodstuff in question. We also have a later ed available. review >> There are some good, simple recipes in here as well (many strange ones you wouldn't find in most other places; ones that are too strange to make for most people--that's what makes it an interesting read).  Very Good/No Jacket

Bloomsbury UK 2006
Hardcover ex-Essex County lib, usual indicators & a lib overwrapper, Hugh would always bypass a McBurger in favour of a squirrel sandwich, or make a detour for fresh road kill - to some he is bonkers+ but to others a shining and shaggy beacon of good sense in a food world gone mad. Armed with a broad mind, a quick wit and a ready appetite, Hugh covers almost every area of global food culture. Whether singing the praises of offal; debunking Colonel Sanders and Dr. Atkins; playing 'poisson roulette' with the deadly fugu fish in Tokyo; pondering the moral inconsistency of those who condemn fox hunting for its cruelty while happily tucking into factory-farmed chicken; fishing for marlin in Kenya, trout in Chile and barracuda in the Bahamas; analysing the tea-dunking qualities of some classic British biscuits; contemplating why if piglets are destined for the pot, why aren't puppies; or reminding us that a reindeer isn't just for Christmas, but tasty all year round, Hugh has an unerring ability to entertain and provoke. 288 thought provoking pp, 750g for posting.  Very Good/Very Good/Good

Simply Tuscan
Luongo, Pino
Pavilion Books Limited UK 2001
Hardcover 1.2 kg to post, 292 pp Weaving poetry, culinary commentary and childhood reminiscences about his native Tuscany into this winsome collection of recipes, restaurateur Luongo (Fish Talking; A Tuscan in the Kitchen) introduces traditional Tuscan cuisine with thematic flourish. Chapters are organized by season, setting the stage for menus that include seasonal holidays and special occasions. For example, spring menus highlight ""Easter Lunch and Easter Dinner"" as well as the ""First Dinner with the In-Laws,"" while autumn features ""Fall's First Truffle Dinner"" and ""A Tuscan Thanksgiving Dinner."" Throughout, Luongo proffers anecdotes and a Tuscan worldview: on summer entertaining, ""Think of it as having a date with nature""; on men cooking: ""If a man can't cook in Tuscany, he has something to be ashamed of."" Devoid of elaborate explanations, recipes are refreshingly straightforward, taking a matter-of-fact approach to cooking. The traditional preparations emphasize handmade pastas and a prolific use of indigenous ingredients, including chestnuts, truffles, herbs, butter and various Italian cheeses. Dishes range from simple--Lamb Stew with Artichokes, Fusilli Salad with Swordfish and Grapefruit, Watermelon Granita--to such involved and elaborate recipes as Ravioli Filled with Pappa al Pomodoro (a tomato sauce) and Black Cabbage, and Sweet and Sour Boar with Chestnut Gnocchi. Luongo will charm readers into incorporating a bit of Tuscany into their workaday life.  Very Good/Very Good

Real Cooking
Slater, Nigel
Penguin UK 1999
Paperback Nigel Slater is the god of sticky things. This is the man who made greed sexy. La France Gastronomique
Willan, Anne
Pavilion Books Limited UK 1991
Hardcover A collection of recipes from ten rural regions of France. This book offers an insight into French country cooking and eating, and shows how the French not only produce good food but also love to discuss it. The recipes featured range from the world famous to the little known. What is a cookbook? More than simply a collection of recipes, a cookbook can be a window to the larger world beyond the confines of the kitchen, as La Varenne Cooking School founder and award-winning cookbook author Anne Willan illustrates in this excellent book. review >>> It's one of those books that can be read back to front, or by random page-flipping, without much loss of charm. Old-fashioned farms, sleepy rivers, small shops, hill villages, wood-fired bakery ovens and lovingly tended gardens are the sort of things that stick in the mind, both from Willan's descriptions and Michael Boys' idyllic photographs. Famous restaurants, when they crop up, are mentioned with pleasure rather than awe, in no way eclipsing more modest experiences. . . .& (re) the choice of recipes. There are only about 100, modestly tucked away in 10 sections at the end of the individual chapters, but they convey a lot. The selection emphasizes obvious dishes and use of obvious regional ingredients rather than gee-whiz "discoveries" and "creations." 192 clean white pp in great shape for some culinary browsing at a bargain price, dj fault is a sunned spine. approx 1.5kg carded/bubbled for post. Real Family Food
Antony Worrall Thompson
Mitchell Beazley Limited UK 2005
Hardcover 175 clean white well bound pp, review > Antony Worrall Thompson (TV cookshow host) communicates the "healthy/bonded/respected/loving family message throughout his books- he has an excellent book on the GI diet, and here he looks at family meals as the core of a happy, healthy family. In 'Real Family Food' he makes the valid point that food is not just something to be quickly shovelled down throats, but a focus for family bonding and an opportunity to communicate with one another, play with one another, and respect one another. He begins by setting out his house rules - meal times are respected as an opportunity to be together and talk about the day. This is not so much a manifesto as a discussion topic in its own right. If you're trying to wean your children off fast foods and fizzy drinks, this is something you can use as a starting point to forge an understanding of the quality and value of food... My comment - I've browsed a LOT of cookbooks & this one is really a very clear, engaging & attractive work on a topic dear to many hearts, you won't be disappointed, you'll be impressed!  Excellent/Excellent

French Country Cooking
David, Elizabeth
Dorling Kindersley UK 1987
Hardcover This copy almost fine bar a closed tear to dj spine at the base, otherwise all pp clean white & tightly bound. First published sixty years ago while food rationing was still in force, Elizabeth David used this book to introduce to the nation's bland palate, ingredients and recipes previously undiscovered in postwar Britain. Many people of that era had never experienced anything other than British cooking meat, two veg and a nice steamed pudding. ......------...... She starts by setting the record straight: 'Those who care to look for it will find the justification of France's culinary reputation in the provinces, at the riverside inns, in unknown cafés...in sea port bistros...and nowadays in cafés routiers, the lorry-drivers' restaurants. In such places the most interesting food of France is to be found.' From having lived with a French family while studying over there, she was able to bring firsthand knowledge to this short yet concise guide to provincial French cooking. She starts with a chapter on the Batterie de Cuisine. But it's the collection of regional recipes that follow that made this book such a treat for 1950s Britain; divided into sections on soups, fish, eggs, luncheon, supper and family dishes, meat, poultry, game, vegetables, salads, sauces and sweets, she gives an entertaining and informative introduction to each. French Country Cooking reveals the immense diversity of the cuisine through recipes that range from a primitive peasant soup of the Basque country to the refined Lyonnaise dish of Poulet à la Crème. To those used to the traditional format of recipe writing the book will come as something of a surprise since Elizabeth David weaves the ingredients into the methods complete with details of the region, tradition and people. Elizabeth David's acclaimed writings are often cited as an inspiration by many of today's leading chefs, as well as home cooks, and are essential to any serious cookery book collection. Book in beaut condition with very attractive period art to illustrate as well as line art by John Minton, a book to savour with a nice chablis or maybe a Pernod & ice.  Excellent/Very Good

River Cafe Cookbook Two
Rose Gray Ruth Rogers
Ebury Press UK 1997
Hardcover The first River Cafe Cook Book was a publishing phenomenon, winning both the Glenfiddich Food Book of the Year and the BCA Illustrated Book of the Year Awards. As well as the innovative, striking design of the book, the appeal also lies in the exquisite simplicity of its food. A sophisticated re-interpretation of the cucina rustica or farmhouse cooking of northern Italy, the food of the River Cafe relies on good quality, fresh, seasonal produce. Ruth and Rose's direct, uncomplecated approach means that many of the dishes are strikingly simple-fish, meat and vegetables are chargrilled, pan-fried and baked-but all of them are vibrant with flavour. This new book retains the essential style of The River Cafe while reflecting the new directions Ruth and Rose's cooking has taken since their first book. Over 200 completely new recipies illustrated and presented - a must both for those who enjoy the delights of cooking. 352 clean well bound pp profusely illustrated. Marcella’s Kitchen
Marcella Hazan
Macmillan  1995
Papeback Marcella's Kitchen by Marcella Hazan has classic Italian food by the cook who believes that 'the best dishes are always best made at home'. Ms Hazan explains the origin and development of her recipes and includes 250 new ones. Bio info >> Hazan was born in 1924 in Cesenatico in Emilia-Romagna. Her parents & her grandmothers cooked, and although she doesn't seem to have done much herself she obviously absorbed an enormous amount. In the kitchen of her New York apartment there was no one to coach her so she began by using cookbooks from Italy, but then began to reuse that acquired information/methodology that she had from home and created her own dishes based on them. Hazan began giving cooking lessons in her flat, and opened her own cooking school, The School of Classic Italian Cooking, in 1969. In the early 1970s, she began to contribute to the NY Times. Hazan's cookbooks concentrate on strictly traditional Italian cookery without American or British influence. Her recipes tend to use only ingredients that would be foundd in Italian kitchens. Hazan's recipes emphasise careful attention to detail. She recommends preparing food by hand rather than processor and prefers the stovetop to the oven because it's more engaging. Her recipes are not necessarily complicated. 327 clean well bound pp.  Very Good/None issued

The Herb Book
Boxer, Arabella & Back, Philippa
Octopus UK 1980
Papeback A really terrific resource with 900g+224pp of info. It's a large format book jam packed with line artwork & colur photos - grab some monks & start a walled garden now - better yet have a glass & let the monks get to work, they love that stuff.  Good/None Issued

Real Good Food
Slater, Nigel
Fourth Estate UK 1995
Softcover 228pp, 800g for posting, There are hundreds of recipes here - all clear, easy to follow, and delicious, which form the backbone to Nigel Slater's now-classic repertoire. A breath of fresh air in the kitchen, Nigel Slater is celebrated for cutting through the pretension and mystique to offer straightforward, practical guidance with wit and humour. review >>> As with all Nigel Slater's books, Real Good Food is more than just a collection of great recipes; it is a delight to read as Nigel's personality, humour and joy in cooking really great food shines through. This book contains some great ideas for both the novice and experienced cook and shows what good British cooking is all about. There are some international recipes, but the focus is definitely on British food, including some long forgotten, but scrumptious dishes like Pan Haggerty. While some of the recipes might not be exactly slimming, they are definitely worth the calories, particularly the Tarte Tatin of Caramelised Onions, Sausage dishes and the wonderful Baked Sea Bream with Fennel & White Wine. Faults? card cover a few marks, text block jolly good.  Very Good/Good/None issued

The Really Helpful Cookbook
Watson, Ruth
Ebury Press UK 2000
If you like the witty stabs of Kenneth Williams wit & the seeming insouciance of Nigella Lawson as she prepares a tempting treat then you'll appreciate this love child of them both, Ruth Watson. Ahhh, if only Keith Floyd was with us to share a cooking show with her it'd be a must watch timeslot. Ruth Watson offers recipes that blend the very best in today’s stylish home cooking, with invaluable tips on everything from which brand of sugar to use for baking, to clever shortcuts for time-pressured, hungry cooks. With passion and humour she explains her recipes in the context of our daily lives, creating a book that is delightful to read and a must-have in the kitchen. Ruth's business acumen have stood her in good stead presenting her TV shows as well as continuing to work on her own business, The Crown & Castle in orford, Suffolk. If you still want more then I'm pleased to say Ruth has signed this copy. 288pp & 1.4kg to post, faults? small tear at flapfold top rear cover dj.  Excellent/Good

Featuring over 150 recipes, this book is a rediscovery of country cooking at its best - fresh ingredients cooked with methods traditionally evolved to bring out delicious natural flavours. Colour photographs illustrate both the dishes and the countryside from which they come. Who is Henrietta Green you might ask? In recognition of her work, Henrietta was awarded by HRH The Prince of Wales, the prestigious BBC Radio 4 'Food Programme' award, Campaigner 2000. The results of Henrietta’s labours were published in the best selling book - Henrietta Green’s Food Lovers’ Guide to Britain - This book has won Henrietta numerous awards - including the Michael Smith / Macallans / Guild of Food Writers Awards for the writer who made the greatest contribution to British food, an Andre Simon Special Award and a shortlist for the Glenfiddich Book of the Year. Is There Nutmeg in the House?
David, Elizabeth
Chivers Press UK 2001 Large Print
Hardcover 448pp & 900g to post. ex-Cornwall County Library with 3 borrows, usual stamps & indicators & plastic over dj. Review >>> After selecting articles to be collected in the anthology An Omelette and a Glass of Wine, some of the unused pieces were saved. This book is the collection of those set aside articles. Some are more interesting than others, but the good ones are real gems. The descriptions of several, simple courgette dishes were intriguing. Her Hand-Made Mayonnaise story is precise, amusing, and makes me want to make mayonnaise. Baking an English Loaf goes into great detail and encourages everyone to read a few simple instructions and make a decent loaf of bread. She could be sassy. I'm glad Elizabeth David was crazy about food and shared so much info in her many article and books.   Very Good/Very Good

Arise Sir Jamie Oliver The Biography
Hildred, Stafford and Ewbank, Tim
John Blake UK 2007
Hardcover 281pp & just too far over the 500g to go in a small satchel, good idea to add a title to the order & use up that postage. Jamie originally harbored dreams of pop stardom with his band Scarlet Division, but by the age of 16 decided to become a chef. After college he earned his stripes in France and then as a pastry chef before starting at the River Café, {we have several of the books available} where he really learned his trade. It was during a television documentary about the River Café that Jamie first caught the attention of the program's editors. Thanks to his on-screen charisma he was featured heavily in the finished documentary and the offers came flooding in. So 'The Naked Chef' was born. The program was a huge success, with an intimate and fresh approach to the role of television chef. Jamie's informal and playful demeanor, as well as his obvious passion and enthusiasm for food drew in a younger audience and revolutionized the traditional cooking program: cooking became cool! The subsequent television series and books gave Jamie fame and fortune the world over & he was then able to pursue the goal of healthy tasty food for schools. Tightly bound with 2 photo sections.  Excellent/Excellent

Arabella Boxer’s Book of English Food: A Rediscovery of British Food From Before the War
Boxer, Arabella & Back, Philippa
Hodder & Stoughton UK 1991
Hardcover 270pp & 700g to post. This copy comes appropriately from Worcestershire Cultural Services (library, with usual stamps). A Book of English Food is an elegant compendium of brilliant recipes adapted from the cookery books of the 1920s and 1930s by Arabella Boxer - she has written for the Sunday Times magazine and the Telegraph magazine and was Food Writer for Vogue from 1966 to 1968 and 1975 to 1991. She was awarded the Glenfiddich Cookery Writer of the Year Award in 1975 and 1978, a Glenfiddich Special Award in 1992 and won the 1991 André Simon Award and the 1992 Michael Smith Macallan Award for fine writing about British food. The Book of English Food describes the delicious dishes - and the social conditions in which they were prepared, cooked and eaten - in the short span between the two World Wars when English cooking suddenly blossomed. The food in these wonderful recipes comes from the great country houses, where little had changed since Victorian times, the large houses in London and the South, where fashionable hostesses vied with each other to entertain the most distinguished guests at their tables, and less grand establishments, like those in Bloomsbury where the painters and writers of the day contrived to lead cultured and civilised lives on little money. Containing 200 recipes, drawn from cookery books, magazines of the period, family sources or from talking to survivors who still remember those days, A Book of English Food is a fascinating glimpse into another world, and a celebration of English cooking at its finest. review >> 'That rare thing, a cookery book with an argument: viz, that English cookery was once both good and independent of the cuisines of her neighbours . . . a rollicking good read' Observer and 'I still find the calm elegance of her writing an inspiration' Nigel Slater  Very Good/Very Good

Forever Summer
Lawson, Nigella
Ted Smart UK 2002
Hardcover 279 Nigella-approved crisp pp, 1.3kg packed to post. Fresh, innovative, versatile and delicious, it's sultry summer all year round and from around the world with Nigella. With all the style and class of her earlier books, and a whole new concept, this is an irresistible and wide-ranging book of summery recipes which can be eaten at any time - from scrumptious Italian antipasti and Greek mezze to Spanish cuisine, from barbecues to beach picnics, from Moroccan roast lamb to Mauritian prawn curry, from the traditional strawberries-and-cream feel of an English summer afternoon to Indian-summer evenings at home. And to round it off, there's a selection of ice creams, summer drinks and melt-in-the-mouth puddings - who could resist Nigella's Slut-Red Raspberries in Chardonnay Jelly? (well, not me that's for sure) Here's a review that is a really great eg: of what I want in a review, so thank you "bboksthatmatter">>> I am a reluctant convert to Nigella Lawson - all the cult of the personality stuff irritates me enormously - but damn the woman, her recipes are good, even the ones that aren't hers. This book weirdly came out mid-autumn last year and it took me a full six months to overcome my dislike of the look of it to pick up a copy, first from the library and then finally to buy it. Boy am I glad I did! These are cracking recipes, the book is well structured and, as long as you skip the crinch-makingly twee intro, very readable. To be fair to the woman, she also properly credits ideas and recipes she's pilfered from other writers and cooks like Jane Grigson and Ruth/Rose of River Cafe fame. I did throw away the lurid dust jacket and can reveal that underneath is a very well-designed jacket of water washing over sand. It could be a metaphor for the whole book.   Excellent/Excellent/very Good

Michel Guérard’s Cuisine Minceur
Guérard, Michel
Macmillan UK 1977
Hardcover Michel Guérard's Cuisine Minceur is 414pp & just past a kilo to post. In 1974 chef Guérard arrived in Eugénie-les-Bains and, with his wife Christine Barthelemy, began renovating a spa resort which Barthelemy had been running, and which was owned by Guérard's father-in-law. Guérard began thinking about how he could persuade Parisians to make the 500-mile trek to the spa and his restaurant. The spas were for health benefits and his creation - cuisine minceur - became the logical avenue for his new form of low-calorie cooking. Cuisine minceur (literally 'slimming cooking') is a style of cooking created by French chef Michel Guérard, which recreated lighter versions of traditional nouvelle cuisine dishes. Critics acknowledged that the minceur versions by Guérard tasted better and were less filling than their nouvelle cuisine originals. Reviewer says >> This is an excellent book to help one cook French food with less calories. Recipes are great. and >> ... for the first time what the authentic and original cuisine minceur really is - a whole new approach to cooking originated by the phenomenally talented and successful French chef who single-handedly decided that fine French food does not have to be fattening.  Very Good/Very Good

Recipes from Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons
Blanc, Raymond
Macdonald UK 1990
Card Cover 280pp, just over a kilo to post. Faults? Card cover corners "sad". Raymond Blanc has achieved worldwide fame as an inspired chef with a relentless drive for perfection. His cooking has been described as 'an extraordinary process of creativity, passion, subtlety, indeed genius'. He is entirely self-taught and has never revealed the secrets of his cuisine. But here he explains his uniquely successful methods and shares some of the very special recipes from his Oxfordshire restaurant, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons. M. Blanc's reputation is such that even before it opened in 1984, Le Manoir was awarded two Michelin stars. In keeping with Raymond Blanc's insistence on fresh produce, the emphasis in this book is on seasonal variety, with thirty to forty recipes for each season. With glorious photographs by Michael Boys, a preface by Egon Ronay and foreword by Hugh Johnson, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons conveys a little of the genius of the chef widely regarded as the best in Britain. Categorized into soups, cold hors d'oeuvres, fish, poultry, game, meat and desserts. There are also basic recipes for vegetables, sauces and jellies, an introduction to wines, and a list of specialist food and wine stockists. Review >>> This book is amazing. It's complicated, it gets technical, but put the effort in and Raymond shows you how to make the best food ever - far better than you'd have dreamed you could manage. It tastes like you've gone to a fabulous restaurant, your friends will be astonished, and many of his tricks work on much simpler dishes.  Very Good/None issued
