The Rogowski Collection
Domoney, Antoinette J.,
Leonard Joel, South Yarra, Melbourne, 1998. First Edition
Hardcover (Original Cloth) Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. First Edition. 1.2 kg; 192 pages, last seven pages blank. 1101 items are listed, where possible with credit to the artist or maker, with a price range indicated of the auctioneer's expectations. The major pieces have an accompanying illustration in colour. Colour illustrated dust jacket. Blue place marker ribbon, which some enterprising person has carefully unwoven for almost a complete length, leaving lots of single threads. Otherwise in very good condition. This auction represented the breaking up of the private collection of a pair of antique dealers who died within 12 months of each other. Their collection featured the best of everything. Delicate, fine, elegant. These words described mostly the arts, and statuary that were offered for sale. My guess is that most of the items that were sold had not been seen for 20 years, and probably will not resurface for sale in Melbourne for at least that long again. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. In 1867 Francis Napier joined the South Australian Government expedition under Captain Francis Cadell to the north coast of the state (now the Northern Territory) searching for suitable sites for a capital and agricultural settlement. He examined the Liverpool River, went up the Roper River in a small steamer and visited Port Darwin, Anson Bay and the Victoria River. Cadell's report, published in the South Australian Parliamentary Papers for 1867, was criticised at the time. Thus, the Napier 'Notes' are the only public account of the expedition, and are an important document of the early contact and charting of the region. Compiled from the Napier journal by his family, and privately printed in Glasgow following his death in 1875. The plates, drawn with lithographic crayon, are by a brother of Napier, and are signed 'JMN'. (Ferguson 13058. Scarce. Small bookshop stickers: A. H. Spencer Hill of Content, Berkelouw Bookdealers. Rocky Section: An Australian Romance.
Partrige, Sydney; [Partridge, Sydney]; Murray, E. H. (illustrator).
Steele Rudd & Co. Ltd / Powell & Co. (Printers) Brisbane 1907
Hardback octavo, very good condition, pictorial tan cloth cover (lightly marked), black & white plates (including frontispiece), new endpapers, pages lightly toned (notably last page), minor edgewear, rubber bookshop stamp title page. 188 pp. An historical romance set in rural Australia. This novel originally appeared as a serial in "Steele Rudd's Magazine". The author's name is also Sydney Partridge in some other novels, and is a pseudonym for Kate Margaret Partridge (1871 - 1953), who wrote novels jointly with another writer. Contains all four plates (rarely found). Review: "This is an Australian love story pure and simple. A young Queenslander falls in love with a fascinating girl from town but is jilted in favour of a titled man with money. He becomes a misogynist of the deepest dye, and buries himself in a veritable wilderness called Rocky Section Ń miles from anywhere. One day he discovers a girl near his place who has evidently lost her way and fainted from sheer exhaustion. He takes her to his hut and revives her, only to find that she has lost her memory and cannot tell where she comes from. He hates women with a bitter hatred, but is on the horns of a dilemma. What happens? "The way out" is most interesting, but you must read it for yourself."

The original Dutch edition is accompanied by a facsimile of the English text prepared by the great Pacific historian of the 18th century, Alexander Dalrymple. Nutmeg and pepper drove this wealthy Dutch merchant to try to break the monopoly on trade routes to the East Indies, and inspired him to forge a new route to the lucrative spice sources via the southern tip of South America. He was influenced by the famous voyage of de Quiros, the Portuguese navigator who believed he had reached Terra Australis, the great southland. The expedition had dual goals: to chart a new course to the Pacific, and to find the great southern continent.

A handsome set of Cowper's poems printed by the famous printers C. and C. Whittingham of Chiswick, with illustrations by Richard Westall. Charles Whittingham (1767 - 1840) was an English printer. In 1789 he set up a small printing press in a garret off Fleet Street, London, with a loan obtained from the type-founding firm of William Caslon, and, by 1797, his business had so increased that he was enabled to move into larger premises. Whittingham inaugurated the idea of printing cheap, handy editions of standard authors, and, on the bookselling trade threatening not to sell his productions, took a room at a coffee house and sold them by auction himself. In 1809 he started a paper-pulp factory at Chiswick, near London, and in 1811 founded the Chiswick Press.

Coveny, Christopher.
Thos. (Thomas) H. Fielding / Printed by John Sands Sydney 1883
Hardback large folio (32.0 x 25.2 cm), original light brown cloth (moire-silk-covered) boards (gilt lettering front cover), original half-bound (dark brown morocco leather spine & corners, with gilt outlining), good plus condition, full-page engravings, new plain endpapers, top edge gilt, faint tide marks edges few pages (previous water contact now dry), cloth cover worn (ring stain on front cover), minor foxing (particularly first & last pages), edgewear. Heavy, and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 120 pp. (Limited edition of 219 copies, source National Gallery of Australia.) A scarce book of engravings of scenes from Dickens by an Australian artist, and published in Australia. The etchings depict memorable scenes from his early novels, particularly Pickwick Papers. There are two title pages, one engraved and one letterpress, and an introduction. Interleaved between the engravings are a page with a small text box that include quotations from his novels. Plate 7 is presented in two states (one on India paper). Printing of the etchings was supervised by C. M. Buck. Podeschi H1042. Ferguson 9140A. Christopher John Coveny (1846 - 1941) abandoned his law practice briefly for teaching, but then became an engraver. This is his most famous work. His etchings were similar to those of Phiz - so he did two extra plates (title page & plate 7) to prove his originality (as explained in a preliminary note). His career was short-lived, however, as he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1884.
