Three quarters leather binding over brown card boards, 404pp. Splits along both front and back spine joints, back cover attached by a couple of threads and nearly loose, slight warping to card. Pencil price and notes on front stuckdown, owner nameplate on front stuckdown, tear in margin of last page and marks down inner margin of last page. Internal pages in near very good condition, just a few tiny chips to margins, clean with no loose pages (last page has some tears along its hinges). Collation as follows - blank free endpaper (recto and verso), title page (on recto) with Preparing for the Press Vol III of Thelyphthora on verso, Contents (recto) and errata (verso), pp xxxii (dedication and prefaces to first and second editions) + pp 404 (main book). No back free endpaper. Top half of hinge is split between pages xvi and xvii and there are two half inch wide blank leaves there - it is unclear whether this is a feature of the binding or pages have been removed, but the page numbers are all present. 620g. The author, unnamed, was the Rev Martin Madan, who believed that many of the causes of prostitution etc could be alleviated by the introduction of polygamy.  Fair

Front cover present but detached, vertical split down leather ribbed spine, back cover attached but worn. Blank endpapers in fair condition, front one is chipped and torn in margins, back ones are torn and creased, only half of last endpaper is present. The printed pages are in much better condition : title page has pencilled date, owner's name etc; some corners are turned/creased; p227-238 are only just attached; a few pages have watermarks in corners. Despite these faults the contents are complete, and the pages are otherwise clean. Owner inscription on front stuckdown. Note that f is used instead of s in the text. Red page edges, size 7cm by 17cm. Volumes 31,32 are 1789. 11, 14, 18 are 1781, all the rest are 1782. Vol 4 has 2 small punctures in front cover running into first 40 pages, no loss of text, 12 is missing 1 leather corner, 25 has 1cm by 5mm and 2cm by 5mm losses to leather near bottom of spine. Some rubbing to leather and a few small scuffs/marks to boards. Some age toning to endpapers but interiors in overall very good condition, bindings and pages are tight, no loose covers. This is the eleventh volume [of twelve volumes] of the History of the last four centuries of the church from the schism of the West to the reign of Pope Pius Sixth. It contains the third and last part of the History of the Council of Trent, and has chapters [libro] numbered 21 and 22. The Council of Trent was the sixteenth century Roman Catholic ecumenical council, defining protestant heresies and issuing numerous reform decrees. Some discolouration to covers and cracks along spine joints (10mm, 15mm and 25mm), gilt titles faded, circular sticker to bottom of spine and rubbing to corners. Fore edges of covers are not stuck to inside of covers, but wrapped over: front stuckdown is onl;y partially stuck down while back stuckdown is held down only by the folded over fore edge. Water stain affects last 100 pages and has caused some yellowing, minor marks to blank endpapers, but pages otherwise free from toning. Previous owner has written a Roman numeral on both stuckdowns and (possibly, see scan) the title page. 463g.  Good

Grimestone's Historie runs from AD806 to 1608, with Crosse's addition taking the history through to 1627. 2 blank leaves, title page, blank verso, dedication (2 pages), 1-57pp, 38-120pp, 133-1272pp (completes Grimestone's Historie), 1273-1588pp (Crosse's AD1608-1627 history, concerning the rule of the Netherlands by Albert and Isabella and then, after Albert's death, by Isabella alone), unpaginated 14 page index, 2 blank endpapers. Although some (approximately 30) pages have been mislabelled by the printers, careful examination of the text (and catchwords at the bottom of most pages) indicates that they are correctly placed. Full-leather covers with bands on spine, gilt titles, marbled page edges. Numerous two thirds page engraved portraits of various historical notables, such as Elizabeth I of England and Robert Dudley, illustrated chapter headpieces and initials. Some rubbing to covers including a small chip to the title label and the spine tail. The engraved title page has some marginal chips and has been attached to what was previously a third front blank endpaper, 35mm closed tear to dedication page, chip (partial loss of page number but no loss of text) to top outer corner of p183-4, 19mm closed tear to bottom margin of p195-6, loss of corner and 4cm closed tear to p367-8 (no loss of text), chip to the bottom margin of the first page of the index. Inobtrusive waterstain to some pages on the first third of the book (see scan for example), but pages generally clean and binding is tight. Small inscription to front stuckdown with small ink bleed onto (blank) first free endpaper.   Good+

Pages have blue speckled edges and books have blue ribbon bookmarks (one is detached). Volume 1 has a preface of 96 pages (xcvi) followed by 477 pages, volume 2 has 590 pages. Spines are faded and there are a few small marks on the covers. Minor rubbing and bumping to edges and corners. The back free endpaper of volume I has a large corner chip, while p81/82 has a 1cm brown spot in the margin. Volume II has a closed tear in the margin of p45. Bindings are tight, pages are clean. Wonderful condition. FRENCH language. Volume 1 deals with science. Part 1 has animal and plant kingdoms (Linnaeus and Tournefort), chemistry (minerals), astronomy (including comets, but planets only go out to Saturn), geography (very eurocentric, America is described in terms of the various European countries which had laid claim to it), mankind's use of animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms. Part 2 of volume 1 deals with maths and physics, and includes a foldout sheet of geometry. The next sections deal with time and with theological philosophy. Volume 2 covers the humanities, with a foldout musical score. Topics include art, fiction, poetry, music, architecture, human laws and morals, history, and, finally, the Bible (Des Juiss et de la Revelation). Fascinating attempt to cover the sum of human knowledge in the eighteenth century....  Good

The internal pages are clean and untoned, with woodcut decoration to the letter at the start of each aphorism. Old-style script with s replaced by f. The book describes the state of medicine through the ages (Greeks, Romans, Arabs to the Restauration in 1453, from 1453 to modern times). The first non-blank front endpaper (just before the title page) has had a replacement paper stuck over it (predates new endpapers). This is dated 1799 and has some fading and creasing and a watermark and states that a second volume involving medical treatment has just been published, and a third involving midwifery will be published. 372g.  Very Good
