Through Countryside & Coalfield
Vincent Mike
ISBN: 0860934284
Oxford Publishing Co. Yeovil, Somerset, England 1990 First Edition
Hard Cover 256 pages b/w photos Mike Vincent's comprehensive study of the B&NSR is probably the most complete and readable title available covering this particular forgotten corner of the once vast British railway network. Rare and insightful photographs are accompanied by period specific track layouts and informative text. The collieries and quarries that were so vital to the line's continued economic viability are featured in great detail, and the Camerton branch has its own section in the book. Local readers and railway ramblers alike will find many landmarks to follow, retracing the route of the now abandoned line : Pensford Viaduct, The Colliers Way and Kilmersdon Incline near Radstock and the route of the Camerton Branch along the banks of the old Somerset Coal Canal.   Very Good

An Historical Survey of the Chester to Holyhead Railway
ANDERSON, V. Roy and FOX, G. K.
ISBN: 0860932168
Oxford Publishing Co. Yeovil, Somerset, England 1984 First Edition
Hard Cover approx 144 pages b/w photos - Unpaginated book with 276 b/w plates and 118 track & signalling diagrams, plus fold-out track diagrams of Chester & Holyhead termini, and endpaper route map. Explanatory captions throughout - The Chester and Holyhead Railway was incorporated out of a proposal to link Holyhead, the traditional port for the Irish Mail, with London by way of the existing Chester and Crewe Railway, and what is now the West Coast Main Line. The Chester and Holyhead Railway Act was passed in 1844, and construction began on 1 March 1845 with George's son Robert Stephenson as chief engineer. (The Chester and Crewe line was built by a separate company, and opened in 1840.) Even though the route was largely along the coast, some bold engineering was needed, especially the high bridge across the Menai Strait (required by the Government to give clearance for shipping). The Irish Mail went to Holyhead by train for the first time on August 1 1848, and on the same day the present Chester station was opened, replacing the separate stations previously used by Crewe and Birkenhead services.  Very Good

Steaming UP : The Autobiography of Samuel M. Vauclain
Vauclain Samuel M
ISBN: 0870950444
Golden West USA 1981 Third Printing
Hard Cover 319 pages b/w photos - Samuel Matthews Vauclain (May 18, 1856 - February 4, 1940) was an American engineer, inventor of the Vauclain compound locomotive, and president of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. He was awarded the John Scott Award and the Elliott Cresson Medal by The Franklin Institute in 1891. He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for arming the United States Army during World War I. Vauclain served an apprenticeship in the machine shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. When he was 24, he was sent to inspect locomotives at the Baldwin Locomotive Works. In those days, machining was a manual job with the machining done by hammers, files and chisels with the mens' own hands. Vauclain's hands were left in a permanent clutching position from endless hours of chipping and filing metal. He became general foreman of Baldwin's 17th Street Shops in 1883, and quickly moved up through the company, as plant superintendent in 1886, then general superintendent. He joined the Board of Directors in 1896, became Vice-President in 1911, Senior Vice-President in 1917, President from 1919 to 1929, and Chairman of the Board from then until his death. He was awarded the Elliott Cresson Medal by The Franklin Institute in 1891. At the same time, the Franklin Institute selected Vauclain for the John Scott Award funded by the City of Philadelphia.  Very Good
